40 Days are left until football, and at least awhile until Madden comes out. If you're interested in getting some football gaming in before that, I have a football game I've created called DeepRoute. http://deeproute.com
DeepRoute is sort of like Franchise mode for Madden, but with other human players. I've worked to have an advanced AI system for the game that uses a lot of the work from Football Outsiders, and Advanced NFL Analytics.
You can watch your games in real time, draft players, sign free agents, and trade with others. There are a lot of advanced stats available, like SRS (Simple Rating System), Pythagorean wins, and much more.
But it doesn't have to be that complicated. Everything is generated automatically for you as the game moves forward. You can learn a lot about the game of football just by playing.
Every day the game moves forward 1 game day for most leagues, but there are slower leagues as well. I prefer having a game every day, but some people might not be on a computer that often.

I've tried it! It is actually pretty fun. Not to time consuming for causal players and just deep enough for tweekers like me.
