Trump still trying THIS MORNING to pressure Kemp into overturning the election results. Crazy that we're at the point where we're dependent on people like Brian Kemp to save our democracy. |

His 2 month long temper tantrum over losing is going to propel him past Buchanan for worst President, if he wasn't there already. |

The lawyers hired by the state of Georgia in the Powell lawsuit are gettin' kinda spicy! |

I'm about ready to just walk out of this country and into the ocean. We've spent weeks railing against the GOP conspiracy theory nuts, and now the Dems are doing the same thing - about McConnell's victory, no less! Led by Christopher Titus! The same half-baked BS about cheating and something seems suspicious and yada yada... just read the comments. Oy. We don't deserve what we have. We just plain suck.

yeah. If anything they should take that "data" and use it as an example to the right that data inconsistencies happen on both sides. |

It is hard to express just how crazypants these lawsuits are as lawsuits (I know that the point of them is to raise money and not to win). The best analogy I can think of: Team A beats Team B in a football game 35-14. Three weeks after the game, team B files a complaint with, like, the deputy director of the NFLPA, arguing that Team A fumbled twice in the third quarter, and turnovers are a big predictor of success. So it is impossible for Team A to have won. So the deputy director of the NFLPA needs to overturn the results of the game and declare Team B the winner. |

After the completion of the third counting of the votes in Georgia, Joe Biden wins again. Georgia results have been certified for the second time now. |

We will keep counting until Trump wins! |

A bunch of GOP congress folks filed an amicus brief with SCOTUS that includes this gem: |

This one is even more direct. Holy crap! Someone is going to get killed.
 |

So naturally, the next lawsuit seeking to overturn the election is from Texas, against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. How much further past pathetic can we go?
 |

didn't a lawmaker from Az. get shot in the face a while back? |

We know where this goes one of two ways. 1) we (whatever side we happens) say that it is the fault of the other side and/or 2) we say no one explicitly said that someone should die so we cannot not be held responsible for how someone interpreted the message that we sent. |

I feel like just the remarkable declining quality of GOP politicians kind of gets lost/obscured in the discussion about Trumpism. Graham and McConnell are horrible (and Romney is relatively inoffensive), but they at least seem intelligent & maintain some air that reminds me of the classic 'GOP statesman' that I grew up with, whereas seemingly every other modern GOP politician is some flavor of used car lot kook. In particular, the next wave of gen-x GOP leadership, Cotton/Jordan/Gaetz/Cruz/Rubio/etc comes off like an an erectile dysfunction support group at a suburban Florida strip mall. |

Someone explain to why the fuck the Texan AG would have any insight into the other states that they don't ? Ia this just one of those very american things in the "everybody can sue everybody for anything" vein ? Why in the world is that even any of his business in his role (decidedly not as a citizen) how other states handle a matter that (as i understand it) is a state matter ? Also, as a layperson: There is no way this isn't riddled with holes in it, no ? Like, say, states Trump won using similar or at least some of the same adjustments ? |
|
They are desperate to get to the Supreme Court because they believe the conservative court owes Trump a win, and one of the matters that the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction over (meaning, you don't have to go to another court before the SC) is suits between states. But this has no chance in hell. |
|
This thread is must read. It breaks down the affidavit on the Texas case. To say it is bad is an understatement. |
|
The other interesting thing about this suit by this particular TX AG is that he was recently referred for criminal investigation by a number of his own aides (a couple of which were fired shortly after) for abuse of office and bribery. He's likely attempting to curry favor with Trump and others for possible assistance with those matters. And he's already facing securities fraud charges. Real winner. Law and order and all that... |
|
 Quote:
The suit is frivolous. It’s a game to the MAGA. They are enjoying this. It’s all a show. And Trump promised them a Supreme Court scene near the end of the show. And if there’s one thing the man knows, it’s television. Give the people what they want. |

So can we get rid of the ridiculous electoral college now since these states are clearly fine making up their own rules. |

All of those states also changed their voting laws to adapt for the pandemic. So their results should probably be tossed as well. |
|
Too many political threads so not sure where this one should go: https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/09/polit...ion/index.html After pausing in the months before the election, federal authorities are now actively investigating the business dealings of Hunter Biden, a person with knowledge of the probe said. His father, President-elect Joe Biden, is not implicated. Now that the election is over, the investigation is entering a new phase. Federal prosecutors in Delaware, working with the IRS Criminal Investigation agency and the FBI, are taking overt steps such as issuing subpoenas and seeking interviews, the person with knowledge said. |

I think it depends on the laws of that state. I know there was a controversy when former GA Attorney General (Thurbert Baker) was appealing a case to the Supreme Court. The Governor at the time didn't want to appeal, but since he was an elected separately, it was ruled that he got to make the final decision. It looks like only 3 AG's are appointed (Hawaii, New Hampshire, Wyoming), so I imagine in those states, the governor would make the final call. |
|
https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/09/polit...ede/index.html Hard to tell if GOP leaders are so naïve that they think that Trump will suddenly decide to admit he lost on December 14th or if they think that we are so naïve that we believe them when they say that. Actually, it isn't really hard. These are smart people. They know what they are doing. They just expect us to be too stupid to notice. Any elected official who hasn't denounced Trump's coup attempt is in on the coup attempt. And the occasional anonymous quote to a reporter that they'd rather not be doing a coup does not change that. |
|
dola: It isn't the coup they object to. It is the fact that the coup isn't succeeding. They are afraid that a failed coup might look bad to Georgia runoff voters. |
|
Yeah, they're just hedging their bets. The coup is a long shot, but if they can get it, it's worth trying to get for them. It's more scary/frustrating/sad that no one is standing up and trying to do something about it. The Dems are basically pretending it's not happening and the GOP are all willing accomplices. And the populace is either 100% behind it or just trying to laugh it off because it's being done by a buffoon. Anyone not seeing this as a giant flashing red light for the next couple of decades is not paying enough attention. SI |

Homer: Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forty percent of all people know that. Kent Brockman: I see. What do you say to the accusation that your group has been causing more crimes than it's been preventing? Homer: Oh, Kent, I'd be lying if I said my men weren't committing crimes. Kent Brockman: Touche. SI |

I've been reading some of these briefs for the Texas SCOTUS filing, and some of these are just dumb (like the one posted below). This whole filing again reinforces my idea that none of this stuff was ever filed in real expectation to succeed. It is only hoping something catches SCOTUS attention enough to stop the process so the electoral college voting deadline has past. It is super long shot, but if they throw enough crap against the wall, they hope something will stick. |

So proud of my AG for opting out, even though it was an EXTREMELY unpopular decision among many in this very very red state. Edit: State AG is such a strange office - they have a different role in every state, depending on tradition, the person holding the office, the relationship with the legislature, the political ambition involved, etc. At the end of the day, though, they're just the lawyer for the state. They shouldn't be policy-driven. Very few live up to that ideal. Edit: but, our nutjob Lt. Governor is trying to join on her own. This dispute will not be good for AG Office funding next year, but, it is the right thing to do. |
|
I would love to see what the reaction would be if New York filed a similar lawsuit against West Virginia and Kentucky (and/or insert your favorite red state). I can just imagine Lindsay Graham and Ted Cruz and Rand Paul spinning in circles on how one is sensible and patriotic while the other is an abuse and mockery of the legal system. How many days away are we from Trump retweeting someone declaring that the 15th Amendment should be repealed and the 19th should be amended to remove urban and suburban women, followed by 70% of GOP officials saying every option should be explored? |
