Dumb question. If I turn Location Services on and have Google Maps, that will act like a regular navigational GPS?

Not a dumb question at all. Yes, it'll work just as a regular navigational GPS. I got to try it last evening when I had to get somewhere and simply entered an address and set it to tell me directions as I drove... It will use the battery more though...

Yes.

and it also works the same for runkeeper app.

Does the iPhone have a mini-GPS in it? Do I need to have my data services on for it to work?

digamma 05-11-2013 10:43 PM

For GPS apps (non-running), I haven't found anything better than Waze.

SegRat 05-12-2013 06:30 AM

I use navigon which I really like. However it is pricy.

yeah, you need to have data services on. For example, an iPod or iPad that doesn't have data service is pretty much useless for a GPS when on the road...

Maybe it's just me or the fact I'm in Canada but I found Waze to be kinda buggy the couple times I turned it on. Screen would turn grey and such...

Warhammer 05-12-2013 02:18 PM

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is pretty cool.

Itunes is close (like today or tomorrow close) to having its 50 billionth app downloaded. If that person is you, you win a $10K gift card. The next 50 people get a $500 gift card. There is a countdown clock at itunes. Get downloading!

Marmel 05-15-2013 02:39 PM

At the rate the count down clock is moving, it could be in the next couple of hours. Start downloading all those free apps. :)

dolfin 05-15-2013 02:43 PM

By my rudimentary calculations, I'd say in less than 55 minutes.

dolfin 05-15-2013 02:48 PM

Maybe my eyes are deceiving me, but I don't think that counter is counting properly :)

Lonnie 05-16-2013 03:21 PM

Le Havre is 99c today for the Universal App. If you like Euro boadgames then you'll probably enjoy it.

Mizzou B-ball fan 05-16-2013 04:25 PM

Has anyone played the strategy war games created by EASY, Inc.? They look a lot like a Panzer General style game. Was thinking about buying up a few of them to try out, but wanted to check for any feedback first.

Alan T 05-17-2013 06:47 AM

Looks like a handful of Knizia board game ports to IOS are on sale for 99 cents. Tigris & Euphrates, Ra and Medici at least are that I can tell.

Also for people who liked Frozen Synapse, the ipad port is out now for it.

FrogMan 05-20-2013 06:23 PM

just discovered something neat:
App Shopper: Spark Player Air - Powerful Streaming Player (Utilities)

This little app, with its companion server (that you can download at http://air.teeonsoft.com), allows you to stream anything that is in shared folders on your main PC, even some .VOB files coming from your own DVDs ripped to the hard drive of your PC.

File conversion and video quality is very good...

FM

FrogMan 05-20-2013 06:27 PM

you can even download the video file from your PC over WiFi to the app so you can watch it offline...

Glowing review...

Warhammer Quest | iPad Board Games

Prinzar 06-07-2013 11:08 AM

Have you downloaded Warhammer? It's a 700mb+ file. Glowing reviews on the App Store too
When it finishes downloading I'll give a review

QuikSand 06-07-2013 11:27 AM

I haven't even tried it out, nor have I ever played/read anything with the name "Warhammer" attached. But I am sort of itchy for a deep-ish iPad game (I think my FM career has run its course) and this is atop my list of candidates, I think.

edit: ...starting download now, heh.

Prinzar 06-07-2013 11:38 AM

My download has just finished. It took a fair while.

I'm also a newbie to the series. Never played the board games or console versions before, but I'm tired of the same iOS style games, so this sounds worth £3 to kill some time

FrogMan 06-07-2013 11:47 AM

I downloaded and have played a bit of WQ since it has come out. Fun game indeed.

Here's another one with a great review that I bought yesterday. In the genre of match-3 with RPG element, it's a pretty fine one and well worthy of 99 cents...

Quicksand mentioned this in another thread, now I am amazed by what it can do. (It may have been mentioned here already)

https://secure.logmein.com/products/ios/

I'm often out of the house when I have drafts running. This has already helped me to check which positions I need, and even remotely run Draft Analyser to help me pick.

The free version is great. 24 hours of use for me with no problems

law90026 06-09-2013 10:50 AM

Recommend both Warhammer and Scurvy Scallywags.

Warhammer is, from what I understand, a remake of the classic boardgame. It's good turn-based fun although I wish there was an option to speed up your character's movement. It's also a little too random at times but I guess that means by luck sucks!

Scurvy Scallywags is a match-3 game that has RPG elements, all bundled up in a nonsensical package. Very much has a "one more game" feel to it.

Derby Quest is a horse racing game that has a similar depth, feel, and approach to New Star Soccer. Not sure how well executed it is yet, but I'm hopeful.

Freemium game, so free to tryout, at least.

I enjoyed it, became repetitive fast. Your level is capped at 6 which seems awfully low. One usability issue makes the repetitiveness worse - you have to tap and move each of your 4 characters which makes navigating a pain in the rear.

I think the bottom line is that this is just an iOS port of an actual dice and tokens board game - not really a true iOS game itself. Kinda frustrating sine the iOS platform can handle a more legit game - but this game doesn't really seek to do that much.

Thanks for this. It looks much more like the Bard's Tale than the iOS version of TBD.

QuikSand 06-16-2013 06:14 AM

It appears to be a 90% rip-off of the look ad feel of the original Bard's Tale... which is basically what I want, so I'm down for that.

terpkristin 06-16-2013 12:24 PM

If you like turn-based strategy RPG type games, you might try Kingturn. It's ugly, but very deep.

I've been getting the hang of Carcassonne over the past month but I am still having trouble understanding the strategy and scoring of fields. I understand that you get 3 points for fields surrounding completed cities like this

X () X () X

but what if my marker is away from those tiles but connected by contiguous fields? Do those field tiles score or just the ones with a city in and next to them? For example, let's say there's a two tile city; then there's a cloister north of it and then a field/road tile in which I have my marker in the field.

--------
m
C
( )

How does this score and is that not the right place to put my marker to score field points?

britrock88 06-16-2013 12:41 PM

I can't exactly decipher your charting, but I'll tell you how I think of fields to keep it straight. If you were to take a black marker and draw between roads and the field and city walls and the field, you would end up with a border for a single (large) field. Any farmer placed in that field scores 3 points for any completed/enclosed city within or contiguous to that field.

britrock88 06-16-2013 12:42 PM

BTW, there is a Carcassonne app on Facebook. I'd be happy to play a couple games with you there to come up with some more specific examples.

terpkristin 06-16-2013 01:40 PM

Why aren't we playing Carcassonne?

Terpkristin me up on GC and start a game! I wish more people played. Hell I may even play on FB...didn't know there was an app.

But only points for those tiles that contain a field and part of a completed city?

britrock88 06-17-2013 12:04 AM

3 points per completed city within the whole field.

Has anybody here tried the Fighting Fantasy games? I figured I have some time today where I can barely move, so I may as well try something new. I think they're a kind of game I'd like to play...I never played them as the books they were back in the day.

Heard they were good outside of a huge cost to play if you wanted to add on.

I've been having a blast with Knights of the old Republic.

Funny, Warhammer gets a glowing review everywhere I look, but I found it boring. The angles you view the game at are very limiting. It takes too long to move all your guys each turn.
It's just not worth the money unless you're really interested in the Warhammer series
