I don't agree with it and it shouldn't have even got to the point that it did, but, as we have seen far too many times in this country, as long as you are white, breaking the law isn't necessarily illegal.

Carman Bulldog 01-06-2021 06:30 PM

This seems very poorly planned. Why wouldn't the rioters quickly declare it an autonomous zone? From what I understand, when you do that, you get to occupy a place for almost a month without any political or police intervention. These buffoons only made it a few hours. Something like the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, or CHAZ 2.0.

Sen. Carper -

“The idea of taking the time to try to impeach him, the idea of trying to expel members of the House of Senate for their efforts to protect the President and continue this fiction ... I just think we need to turn the page."

You’d think she would know rioting in the Capitol would not end well. Darwin wins again.

Ksyrup 01-06-2021 08:05 PM

Probably a sideshow trivia fact that will only register with like 2 people here, but it appears Jon Shaffer, lead guitarist and main member of metal band Iced Earth, was one of the people who stormed the Capitol today.

If you watched the ITV report with the cameraman sort of imbedded with the Rioters as they broke in to the building, there was a futile attempt by some officers to stop them. They were greatly outnumbered, and gave up after a few baton swings.

One takeaway is that the Capital Police should probably be dissolved. Can have the Secret Service take it over going forward.

It's also a good argument for why DC deserves statehood. All this happened in the backyard of people who have no representation in government. They are at the mercy of the federal government. A federal government that looked the other way today.

Literally no one on this forum as ever said that. The narrative has always been against bad cops, how somehow manage to kill unarmed Black men at a much higher rate than unarmed (insert race here)

And I am not from the defund the police crowd, which is just plain stupid. I believe Police need more training better screening and more opportunity to better engage the communities they serve, so they can better do their jobs.

Uh maybe not literally but there has been several that went that direction.

Vast majority of cops are bad. Lot's of pithy statements about "gee, those white folks didn't get shot, we know why wink, wink" etc.

Obviously we take that with a grain of salt. Just like we take CB's statement with a grain of salt.

Lathum 01-06-2021 09:36 PM

1 person got shot today during an overthrow of our capitol building while our VP and senate were inside.

What do you think would have happened if they were black or muslim?

JeeberD 01-06-2021 09:39 PM

A couple of people that I at one point considered good friends, the husband having coached my son in football and baseball for several seasons, and the wife having served as team mom those seasons, posted pictures this afternoon from the top steps of the Capitol.

Our friendship became strained after Trump was elected in 2016, as they were very vocal Trump supporters, and I was a very anti-Trump supporter. We were able to remain friendly, but it became even more strained in 2018 when I became a very vocal Beto O'Rourke supporter, while they supported Ted Cruz.

Things were starting to thaw up until the start of the pandemic. Then in May or June, I think, I went to the farmer's market where they sell their BBQ to pick up some ribs and brisket. It's an outdoor farmer's market, but I still wore my mask when I went up to get the food and chat with them. The husband made a comment about my mask, and I said that I would rather be overcautious than not cautious enough, and he responded that he chooses not live his life in fear. That kind of ended the friendly banter we had going on.

That was the last time I've seen them in person. We've had a few minor pleasant exchanges on FB over the past couple of months, and I was hoping that our chilled friendship could thaw again. But supporting Trump is one thing...storming the Capitol is an entirely different thing.

It's sad, but I'm done with them now. I don't know how I could ever see them in a different light than that of seditious traitors who participated in a coup attempt.

No one says this and I'm guessing you know how dumb that sounds.

Also pretty sure the person who shot her was Secret Service. While Capital Police were compliant in the attack, the Secret Service was not going to let someone breach the chamber where the VP is in.

Seems like they know how to not beat up and kill people as long as they are white and have a MAGA hat on. Today showed that this isn't a training issue, it's a decision on when to use force and when to take selfies with terrorists.

This makes it even more pointless. Part of Hawley's objection is the courts haven't heard the PA claims so Congress must do so. Instead they'll have a meaningless vote with no evidence or arguments presented.

ISiddiqui 01-06-2021 11:33 PM

Analogy from a friend of mine: Graham (and others) try to get off the Titanic by dressing up as women, hoping to get a place on a life boat.

So after 24 hours, let's re-examine how dumb this all was:

Donald Trump is a bitter vindictive idiot who couldn't hold onto power even when he was given both the House and Senate. Yes, under his term, they managed to stuff the SCOTUS and fill some judge vacancies with completely inept lackeys but when you give people roles where they are no longer accountable (like judgeships) they don't really need to follow anyone (ala Samuel Beckett but let's not get ahead of ourselves).

He told his idiot followers to breach the gates (and basically had capitol police not only stand down but open the doors). He wanted this, this was his grand fuck you.

And by the way, let's talk about white privilege for a second, because if this had been BLM, there would've been a massacre (I mean, Muslims flew planes into buildings and we invaded two nations and killed 100s of thousands of people), but white people apparently can storm the Capitol with just one shooting (a 14 year military vet who should've known better, but I think that of most of his stupid ass followers).

Yet after all that, what should've been 30 minutes was grand standing and we still had objections because Trump and Trump reality.

For all of this, nothing changed. Biden is now going to be president and the democrats have the House and Senate (granted tenuous). But I would go full bore and not stop.

McConnel is going to be 80. He is a scumbag but when you see the Nunes, Gaetz and Jim Jordan, you wonder what will happen next.

Somebody equated this to the Beer Hall Putsch, and it may just well be if we continue to be wishy washy over what should be stern enforced response. This could be the end of it, or it could be the last gasp before the center of the line folds.

I don't like Pence, but as a career politician he took the reins and re-secured what could have been a spiraling death of the nation.

I don't think the 25th amendment applies here; Trump must be impeached and imprisoned and then you go after the children and his enablers (Rudy, you are to be hunted).

You need to kill the root to wither the vine. Then I'd be looking at Fox, Newsmax, OAN, Youtube, Parler, Twitter, theDonald, etc...I'd find out who financially sponsors these sites and shine the light on them...you can't censor them, but you can starve them to death without cashflow.

Keep in mind that they say the same stuff about the Left QS

My hope is it just goes away but I'm afraid, due to the echo chamber they've created, it won't.

This makes it even more pointless. Part of Hawley's objection is the courts haven't heard the PA claims so Congress must do so. Instead they'll have a meaningless vote with no evidence or arguments presented.

What makes it even worse is that Hawley is a lawyer and former SC clerk. He knows why the case "wasn't heard". Laches. You cannot wait to after an election to see who wins and then object to a law after you lose. The courts are never going to disenfranchise people who followed the law at the time of the election. He absolutely knows that, and is playing on the fact that is followers are ignorant of that. He should be disbarred.

Haven't seen the video but if she was part of the group that stormed into the Capitol, I've got no problem with that (regardless of white, black, yellow, brown). I'm ambivalent ... like the habitual covid-denier congressman and like the wingsuit example.

SI

I watched it in bed and turned if off after 20 min of Pence saying the same thing over and over again. Felt for the guy.

Man, Nancy Mace may be a newly elected Congresswoman from South Carolina, but she is slamming Trump and his supporters like a member of The Squad.

Edit: That's a massive exageration, but she still is firmly blaming his enablers for what happened.

I agree with the author of the tweet. This is amazing boots on the ground reporting.

Hope the BLM lawyers are taking notes that you can go onto Federal grounds, destroy property, break and enter, disrupt legal proceedings and walk away (generally unscathed).
