Those are all *gigantic* cultural shifts that the generation above us didn't experience. And in many cases, not only did they not experience the tech/race differences, in the case of movies and movies, in most cases they out-and-out rejected it, whereas the average Gen Xer has familiarity with the music and movies of the 2 generations beneath us. I can have a conversation about race, music, movies, or technology with the average 30-year-old, where the average 70-year-old would be completely lost.

I've had similar conversations with people. I think our generation is also really unique in that we grew up without a lot of the modern technology we use so much now. We remember what it was like to read box scores in the paper the next day, or 2 days later for west coast games. Not be able to DVR shows, go to blockbuster to rent movies, sports highlites on the news, three way calling!! etc...30 year olds can't grasp that way of life yet 70 year old don't embrace a lot of the technology available to them.

That makes sense to me. I just don't know - never really looked much into it.

The big thing I've seen about that is it drastically alters how we receive and process information. Boomers on the one side of the digital divide, X in the middle, and Millennial/since on the other side.

Was always the best. I travelled a ton in my early 20s and it was always free at hotels and I would pick it up in airports.

Kodos 11-05-2020 12:03 PM

I would take a McConnell-Pelosi removal in a heartbeat.

Edward64 11-05-2020 12:03 PM

I can picture Floridians kicking back today in their lawn chairs and nodding knowingly that they are no longer the main example of election "anxiety".

Me too. Back then USAToday had a lot of content. Now the paper version is a very slim version of itself. The website is okay.

Drake 11-05-2020 12:05 PM

When I was like 12, I would set a portion of my allowance aside just so I could buy a weekly copy of USA Today outside of my mom's office.

Triple bonus during baseball season when they'd print a whole page of current player stats.

That stat day was great. I was always excited when we were in a hotel during baseball season.

From what I've read PA is counting early votes only at this point and they've consistently broken about 78% toward Biden since yesterday.

Just about everything now is mail in. There are a few election day votes in Phily, but the rest of the state has counted those, IIRC.

50k left in GA and the lead is now less than 14k. It's going to be clooooose

Nevada is going Biden.

kingfc22 11-05-2020 12:25 PM

Mail-in ballots in GA for Biden continue to trend at 67%+ which should be enough to take the state.

albionmoonlight 11-05-2020 12:27 PM

PredictIt has Biden with better odds in NV than it has for Trump in NC.

My guess is that the networks are waiting for Biden to surpass Trump in PA and then, with the remaining ballots being expected to be pro-Biden, call it then.

kingfc22 11-05-2020 12:30 PM

Yea, NV seems solid for Biden at this point.

stevew 11-05-2020 12:30 PM

I think we should just settle this election in PA with Lt Gov. John Fetterman in bare shirt combat vs Eric and Donald Jr.

Do you think that Eric's torso is paler than his face?

Is that physically possible?

Edward64 11-05-2020 12:34 PM

I know MSM is reporting that mail-in favors Biden. Article in ajc.com said all military overseas ballots (Fulton) have not yet been counted. I would assume those go for Trump. Wonder if that is same situation for the other battleground states?

Quote:

There are still 3,600 provisional ballots and an undetermined amount of military overseas ballots left to be finalized. The deadline for those is 5 p.m. Friday.

Trump knows that's the game, too, which is why he's trying to get people in to slow down the PA voting as much as possible.

I used to write down my players stats on grid paper for MicroLeague Baseball for each game, until they came out with the Box Score/Stats disc. I still have some of those pieces of grid paper somewhere.

That's nothing. When I was 11 I created a league using a Talking Football game that was shaped like a stadium. It only came with cards for both all-pro teams, but I bought a fantasy football book and did my own fantasy draft to create 8 new teams. Of course I kept stats in a notebook! I'm 39 and still not married. :(

I loved that guy's commercials and some of the TV spots he had when he was running for the senate a few years ago. I had wondered what happened to him earlier this year (during the barrage of commercials). Glad to know he's still around and moving up.

It's funny looking him up on wikipedia - he has a MPP from Harvard. He looks like the dude in everyone's high school class that wears flame shirts and black shorts year 'round. We need more people like him in politics.

ISiddiqui 11-05-2020 12:48 PM

PA SOS apparently just said there are 550k absentee ballots left. At Biden's rate on absentee ballots in PA, he should make up that deficit really quickly.

I tell younglings about those days and they look at me like I have an onion tied to my belt...which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. ... The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war.

Yet the PA votes have barely moved in hours. So let's see some movement

ISiddiqui 11-05-2020 12:52 PM

There was just a PA drop 30 mins ago.

114k lead with 92% of the vote counted.

At 75% for Biden, he would make up 275K and is currently down by 114K so he better hope this trend continues. Like I mentioned earlier, I just don't see why folks on TV keep talking about some landslide victory in PA for Biden. He should get there but it isn't going to be by 500K.

I think your math is off.

75% of 550k = 412.5k

Means Trump gets (25%) = 137.5k

So Biden would win those 550k votes by 275k.

kingfc22 11-05-2020 01:02 PM

Yea, I caught that and updated it.

Still not a huge victory but makes me feel a bit better.
