A stalemate here. Can McCarthy move any of these no votes? Does the Dems work out some kind of deal to walk out to allow his election?
|
The Dems brought *popcorn*, so they're not going to lift a finger to bail them out.
|
The idiots voting Jordan despite Jordan telling them to vote McCarthy is peak gop these days. When Jordan and MTG are voices of reason you are too far gone.

Remember the old adage of "When your opponent is making a mistake, don't interfere"? Democrats owe McCarthy nothing and have nothing to gain by helping him. So they might as well bring the popcorn  |

and GOP boards I've read are loving this. According to them it's a sign their representatives are finally rejecting RINOs and the establishment, that they don't have sheep like dems that just fall in line, and McCarthy needs to step aside for someone that isn't pro-liz cheney and pro Russian hoax. I was dumb enough to expect talk of embarrassment. |

I agree If they can't agree on something as simple as a speaker it's going to be a shitshow for the next 2 years but it's going to be a shitshow the GOP owns. Let them investigate the shit out of Hunter Biden, Hillary, and try to spin Jan 6 as something started by antifa and encouraged by the DOJ. None of that is going to play well with voters. |
It plays well with their voters, which is why we have this crapfest.

Now Scalise nominates McCarthy. Weirder and weirder.

The fact that Jordan doesn’t want the job and voted for McCarthy and these morons are still pimping Jordan shows you they have no interest in anything other than performative gridlock. |
The debt ceiling hits in March. We are going into default, aren't we?

Haha. Chip Roy talks about how they have to get rid of the swamp then nominates Jim Jordan. The simulation is busted.
|
There is an expectation that McCarthy loses votes in the next round.

Biden should name McCarty secretary of homeland security.
|
Gym Jordan is gonna be speaker. What a world.
|
Enjoying the MSNBC coverage of the chambers. Talking heads are speculating that Scalise can probably get more votes.
(Never noticed but those chairs are really close to each other and don't look that comfortable) |
It would never happen but it would be interesting if the Dems could get behind someone like Fred Upton and then convince 6 Republicans to vote for him.
|
Not all, but a fair amount of Republicans enjoy breaking things and then pointing out how they don't work. I feel like there are enough in the house that are willing to put this on display for quite awhile. Popcorn seems appropriate.
|
I feel bad for the families there to see their loved ones sworn in.
|
Adjourn until noon tomorrow...
What a shit show |
All we know right now is it won't be McCarthy. The speculation on MSNBC is he most likely will resign if he loses the speakership.

Holy crap! The Pennsylvania state house just elected a Democrat as Speaker after the GOP couldn't come to a consensus. He was nominated by two Republicans. After he was elected, he annouced that he would become an independent.

Well that was a delightful first day of the New Congress wasn't it?

Wow! |

I'm absolutely delighted by the backbone shown by the (now) 20 holdouts. If promoting a willing dupe like McCarthy is the only option, I'd just as soon the House not be seated. |
The most delicious part of this is (a) Trump didn't come to McCarthy's rescue despite how thoroughly McCarthy prostrated himself to Trump in front of the world, because (b) Trump has so little sway anymore that people like Gaetz, Boebert, Jordan, etc.,are openly defying his endorsement and he doesn't want to look even weaker by making a useless demand.
|
If McCarthy was half the man he thinks he is he'd already be lining up Dem votes and making it clear the Freedom Caucus can get some of what they want or none of what they want. The only reason this is chaos is that McCarthy is so transparently weak.
The man needs to channel the spirit of LBJ. |
THIS JUST IN:

Unless he does something drastic like this I don't see a path for him to be speaker. The hardline no's seem to be more emboldened and are adamant he step aside. Watching Marjorie Taylor Greene melt down on twitter has made this worthwhile though. |
I consistently over-estimate GOP competence.
|
|
Gaetz said the quiet part out loud.
|
One of McCarthy's people have suggested they would consider going to the Dems if necessary. I don't think the Dems are going to accept a deal with him. Another Republican maybe? Mike Mulkavy was suggesting Fred Upton on CNN, but I think that may be just a scare tactic.

Yeah can't see the Dems making any deal that gives McCarthy the Speakership. I mean he defied the Jan 6 Committee by ignoring their subpoena. How do Dems work with a Speaker like that?
|
Quote:
You don't. McCarthy has spent his political career waiting for his chance to become Speaker and by trying to play all sides over the years he's alienated everyone. Dems can't trust him and won't work with him and team crazy on the GOP side won't work with him and don't trust him. I can't imagine the promises made behind closed doors to MTG for her to stan for him so hard. I'm sure he thought if he brought her in he'd pull Gosar, Gaetz, ect but all it's done is caused them to consider her a traitor. |
Quote:
Delicious. |
Trump's decision to support him is what I think made MTG support him. I believe there was deal there that MTG was going to be Trump's voice in McCarthy's ear. Now Trump is quiet and probably won't make a statement till he can claim he was behind whoever wins all along.

I read that Justin Amash offered to be a unity speaker. I don’t see him as someone dems would vote for, but I just don’t see why McCarthy would spend years and years on this, get 95% of the vote he needs, and then give up.
|
Amash has been very favorable to the insurgents, so I can't see him getting anywhere close to enough support.
|
Santos posted a press release announcing he was sworn in today. He's certainly sticking to the script!
|
Quote:
And Ohio's went to a moderate republican that made a deal with dems. Meanwhile Trump refuses to back McCarthy in an interview this evening. |
Quote:
trump will back whoever makes him look stronger. Forget anything that happened before, if he can toss McCarthy under the bus and get something out of it he will. |
Quote:
Exactly. It is amazing how people can't see he will back whomever wins and claim he was behind them the whole time |
Apparently Kevin McCarthy has already moved into the Speaker's office, which is pissing those voting against him off. Gaetz is trying to get him booted from the office since he isn't the speaker, and as Gaetz pointed out, didn't even get the most votes today.
I just don't see either side backing down on this. |
I figure this will probably go to penalty kicks.
|
We’ve reached a point where the house couldn’t even come together as one to declare the sky blue.
