Well, every newspaper in central Jersey is killing the effort by Rutgers last night, a 31-0 victory over FCS foe Norfolk State. The game was 6-0 at halftime, thanks in part to a gift field goal as time (should have) expired in the second quarter.
Taking a look at the game, though, there are positives. Number one, they didn't freakin' lose!!! I was in the stands for the lost to New Hampshire several years ago - one game after defeating Michigan State on opening day... and at least this didn't turn into THAT disaster.
This is the equivalent of an exhibition game, a luxury that the college season doesn't afford. Is Rutgers ready to win the Big East? Probably not, based on what we saw last night. But in reality, no matter how much local newspapers like to shout that this is the time to win the conference, this is not really the quality of a football team that could do that.
Rutgers is counting on an experienced quarterback - i think the most experienced in the Big East. But guess what, folks? He is only a SOPHOMORE, and he will not be perfect. With a sub-par offensive line, and a questionable-at-best running game - they NEED perfection from the QB - and I'm not sure that's a realistic expectation.
Rutgers is less than 10 years removed from being the laughingstock of all college football. A school where many voices were asking for a move back to I-AA in order to save money and acknowledging the inability to compete in major college football.
In reality, though, Rutgers now has a pretty good football program. It is not great - but that doesn't mean one shouldn't cheer and appreciate the fact that we ARE competitive, and we CAN beat any team (within reason) on the right day.
