I really hope this is true.

And if it is, then it shows me that Peyton is being more realistic than Irsay.

Peyton Manning just keeps getting classier and classier. The fact that he purposely didn't want a high contract and the owner kept pushing it proves how badly he wants to win another Super Bowl.

ESPN reported Manning agreed to a five- year, $90 million contract which, at $18 million per year, matches the annual pay of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as the highest in the NFL.

I find it funny how quickly you changed your mind OP. You start a thread calling for his head on a platter nearly, yet now you're praising him and hoping he stays for good.

On topic, glad he restructured so the team can address needs.

Peyton's new contract is set to give him $23 million per season for the first three seasons (until he's 38) after that it's two years at $10.5 million per season, which we all know will never happen. He'll either retire or they'll restructure his deal again in three years time.

People keep using the excuse that without Peyton the Colts would win less than 6 games, but in all fairness you have to remember that it's the organization's own fault! They've been putting all their eggs into one basket for years now, instead of ensuring that they would be competitive regardless. Manning is without a doubt a fantastic player, but his contract isn't exactly team friendly. As Stampede Blue (a Colts fansite) described Peyton's new contract:
Quote:
That figure is a ludicrous cap hit. Indy might as well forfeit the season if they have to pay $23 mill out of a $120 mill cap to just one player.

[...]

This cannot be stressed enough, because it is the plain, simple truth: The Patriots and Eagles have passed the Colts in the talent department, and they did so via free agency and trades. The Packers, Steelers, Ravens, and Jets were already better. The Texans and Jaguars have dramatically improved their rosters, in particular their defenses. Indianapolis barely won the AFC South last year, and it wasn't because of injuries that they were held back. They underachieved because their roster wasn't very good, and Peyton Manning essentially willed them to ten wins.
And while people like to compare Peyton's contract to Brady's, Brady is only set to make around $13 million in 2011, which is enough for the Patriots to sign Ochocinco and Haynesworth (plus keep a number of free agents) and thus be a more realistic contender for the Superbowl than the Colts IMO.

Sweet Baby James, 23 Mil is a lot of cheddar.

And over 25% of the team's salary cap.

Yikes.

I too would take $90 mil. Color me classy.
