Oct 16.2 MOunt Rushmore -- Stand Up Comedy
Okay...I know there's already been a Mt. Rushmore today, and that the day's more than half over even here on the left coast, but if I don't write it down now, I'll forget it tomorrow.
Y'all know the rules. Allow me to begin: George Burns Richard Pryor Lenny Bruce Chris Rock George Burns goes in as the 'classic'. I really wouldn't consider myself a fan, and went back and forth on this one between Burns and Bob Hope, but plain old longevity made me give the nod to Georgey. RIchard Pryor is unarguable. At least 8 hours of BET programming every day is devoted to people stealing his bits. Lenny Bruce goes on my mountain solely based on influence alone. Personally, I think Bob Newhart was funnier, but it's hard to deny that Bruce had a big hand in shaping modern-era stand-up comedy. Chris Rock is my weakest link...I think he's probably been the funniest man on the planet for like the last 10 years, and I include him purely based on my own opinion, devoid of any worthwhile argument to support him over several other more qualified comics. |

Yeah, I too considered Murphy, but gave his slot to Chris Rock, perhaps just because he's more fresh in my memory. Plus, he lacks Rock's almost angry undertones...the way he just spits and screams his material makes his humor seem so 'real', for lack of a better word. Cosby is also a GREAT pick that made me go "d'oh, of COURSE!" when I saw him on others' lists. I probably still wouldn't have given him the nod on my personal monument, but you can't argue the selection. Carlin, I like, but I'd slot him against Pryor due to the time period and edgy material, and I'd give the nod to Richard easily. |

I'm bummed to have such an ordinary list, but no one else has yet to beat these four to me. I can accept Cosby on the list too, but he doesn't make me laugh like these guys.

I heard Woody Allen was a riot at standup, but I haven't heard any of his material to back it up.

Glad to see someone give Schimmel some cred. My wife and I watched him a few weeks back and he was very, very funny. One of the best stand-up guys no one knows about. I don't think he rates for a Rushmore over a Carlin or Prior, but really good comic.

Yeah, Schimmel's a dark horse, but what tremendous upside. Plus, he actually makes me laugh more than Richard Pryor. There's just something so Middle America, yet warped, about Schimmel.

Damn... can't believe I missed this the first time. And I had even been thinking this would be a great topic...
Anyways, my picks: George Carlin - Really has to be there if the list is going to be worth anything. Richard Pryor - Ditto. Bill Cosby - Younger people probably don't realize just how good he was Steven Wright - A bit of a darkhorse, but the guy was gold inthe 80s and 90s and his stuff is still arguably the most-quoted material on the internet. Bruce and Newhart are good picks too. Chris Rock isn't there yet, but he's on his way. And while I'm at it: Jerry Sienfeld may be the most over-rated standup comedian of all time. Discuss. |
