Alright boyz, here we go!!! Age of Conan First Impressions Thread!

Just played up to the city. The graphics rock, but I'm trying to figure out how to invert my mouse. I'm Weedeater on Bluesteel (PvE). Are we going to get a FOFC group together on a server?

Delraen (Barbarian) & Kaliman (HoX) on Ishtar (French Pve Server).

So Far I like :

- The universe
- The combat system
- Many quests being very original due to the mature content
- The graphics

I dislike :

- The chat system, I mean this one is mostly the same as in Anarchy Online (8 yrs old already) but worse...
- The map, you always have to zoom in and out, it's hard to find members of your group etc...
- My girlfriend started crafting last night and it doesn't look like it's well implemented (more or less you get no info on what to do).

Still I really like it so far (Lvl 21 for the highest character who left Tortage before I went to bed).

Grrrr...resisting the urge to join a MMORPG after the time it took to get clean from my WWII Online addition 2 years ago.

I agree the graphics are very good. I'm taking a break right now, but it's simply amazing. It took me a while to figure out how to hide (I'm one of those people who just jumps in). I created an assassin on Thog and he's pretty fun to play. I was doing the solo player at night in the city when I realized I hadn't put enough points into my climbing ability. You have to have 30 points to climb a ladder. I thought the points were for speed.

Anyhow it's a fun game and has a bunch of quests that are great. OOC is pretty quiet still but I think it'll pick up tonight when people get home.

So...the question lies...if I had to choose a game to give up and play this....is it worth giving up a game to play it?

I can't say if it's worth giving up a game to play it at this point. It feels different from the only other MMO that I've played extensively, City of Heroes. Realize though, I've only tried Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online, and Guild Wars. I can see myself spending a bit of time with it.

So far it is very friendly, but I am only to level 13.

There are 2 modes day time(multi-player) and night time(solo)
So it is set up, to some extent, for soloing.

At 20 you make it to the main game area.
I have no idea what to expect then.

Could you be a little more specific?

Different setting...
Different classes...
Different combat system...
Different graphics engine...
ect...

If you are asking if it is better then WOW, I will tell you in a few months when I hit endgame.
I suppose its biggest draw right now is: it is not WOW.

Got to level 10 with my Assassin. It's getting a lot of time from me today and probably over the next two weeks as I'm pretty much off.

Yea, world of warcraft:

Subscription:

$14.99 USD - One Month Recurring
$41.97 USD - Three Months Recurring ($13.99 per month)
$77.94 USD - Six Months Recurring ($12.99 per month)

LOTRO was $15/mo too I am almost certain. AoC going for $20/mo is surprising to me.

what features does Age Of Conan offer that would make someone pay for this game rather than World of Warcraft?

Or

I am tired of World of Warcraft. What does Age Of Conan offer that would keep me from becoming tired of Age of Conan quickly?

Please include all features in your answer, including setting, combat, blah, blah, blah.

Ain't no biggie.

Anyhow, once everybody gets settled and the servers are stable, they'll hand out the guest pass keys that are good for a week. You'll be able to try out the game for free to see if you like it.

I know very little about the actual game, but the one thing that does interest me in AoC as a former DAoC addict over a game like WoW is PvP on a grander scale and with some meaning. I believe there is more of a focus on sieges and big sweeping encounters which are always fun. I'm not sure how it works though.

I think the combat is a little more action-y as well. Nothing complicated but you have in melee like a high/medium/low attack and defenses can have holes, and they change.

To further answer your questions I found this article that explains some of the differences.

I wasn't trying to be flippant.
I was just such an open ended question.
It's mostly personal preference.

I really liked WOW, I didn't care for LOTRO.
No real reason I could explain, just my opinion.

It's a MMORPG, they are all generically the same, like all FPS are generically the same.
The only real difference is in the "look and Feel."

If you are still enjoying WOW, There isn't a compelling reason to change.
If you are bored, it's a new game to master and a new world to explore.
I think a lot of people have played WOW so long they are just bored with it.
AoC looks like a reasonable alternative and seems like it is going to take off.

Are you tired of WOW, what specifically are you tired of?
If you have a specific question I will try to answer it, though I have not gotten very far yet.

It's not too bad. I have a slightly underpowered rig and am not getting super fps. Around 8-12 in The inn and 30-40 in the jungle but even with the graphics turned pretty much off, it's still very very nice looking with dx9.

I totally missed this thread.

I'm really liking this game, although I haven't had time to play it much. I only have 1 character to level 10.

Most of my characters are on Bluesteel if anyone wants group or whatever. It'd be cool to have an FOFC guild.

I have an assasin Nubrockne on Thog. Made it up to 16 tonight. The load times are annoying to start the game but I have been liking the game quite a bit so far.

The combat system is great. It's nice to be able to actually strike multiple enemies with the same attack, ad be able to use some very deadly skills, like being able to stealth up behind my targets and occasionally being able to get a one shot kll as I slit their throat. The finishing moves are great too, when I can get them.

Haven't tried grouping yet. Would like to see how that goes.

Looking forward to getting out of the first zone to see what the rest of the game is like.

I'm playing on Derketo server (PvE). There is a big guild there (The Wanderers, about 50 people from the Octopus Overlords/Gaming Trend forums) that I think everyone here would fit well in. I'm sure you'd be welcome.

Character name is Braven, a Bear Shaman. I also started a character named Brik, a Barbarian, on Cimmeria (PvP Role Playing Server).

I'm taking it slowly, only level 23, but so far so good. The first 20 levels occur in a pirate town. Very well done. I've heard things are less polished/more buggy as you move forward, but time will tell.

I've also heard the ganking is incredible on the regular PvP servers, but it's been pretty mild in the PvP Role Playing server.

Everyone should go and play on a pvp server. This is my first time doing pvp and its fun.The fighting can get pretty fast and furious but the grief/camping is pretty non-existing. Maybe it's the "cultural RP" server i'm on.Bane

Um, yeah. It's pretty much your server, then. Either that or you're still in Tortage.

Yeah, I'm not going to do a PvP server. I've heard horror stories. I like to play in peace, and then PvP when I feel like it. I don't want to be forced to.

But numbers seem to be dwindling. I'd say there are about half as many people left now as there were a week ago.

Not sure if that's normal or whether the game isn't sticking with people.

If you do want to try, go to Bane. Your culture types can't attack you. There are a lot(most) of reds(enemies) running around who havent attacked me and i'm only soloing. Sure there are some who will attack on sight but once out of Tortage it's get a lot less annoying.

Mrs. Eaglesfan just bought this for me about an hour ago. It's taking a while to install, which I guess is normal for this type of game?

We played Dark Age of Camelot together 4 or 5 years ago, and if we both like it we are going to buy another copy so we can play this together.

Anyway, I'll second Schmidty's question: Is there a way to move an existing character between servers?

Also, is there a server that most of the FOFC players are playing on? I don't think I want to play PvP for my first character at least while I'm just learning how to play the game.

There are a couple FOFC chars on Thog.

I thought the install time for this game was insane. Especially since I also had to install an update to Vista to run it. I believe it was well over 2 hours total for me, between the install, the patch manager update, the patches being updated and then the Vista update.

It's installed now - took over 90 minutes between the initial install and the patches. However, now, I'm fighting skipping sound in the intro movie - trying to find a solution to that.
