Alma Mater Fantasy Football League (congratulations to Penn State, champions)
I've always thought this idea had some legs... I'm sure there are enough people here to get this to work.
The idea is simple -- a fantasy football league where your players are not assigned via a draft or auction, but simply based on where they went to school. You take a team based on one college, and you automatically get the rights to all players who played for that school. Set lineups every week and keep score otherwise as usual, using dummy inactive players to fill out a legal roster as needed. If there is interest, I guess we could set this up as a free Yahoo! league. I'm thinking we could make this work with as many as 16 teams, whatever is their maximum. Not everyone will be able to field a complete roster, and transactions and such won't be much of an issue. Ought to be fairly low-impact, all told. Any takers? We can flesh this out assuming there is interest, but I am thinking something along these lines:
Weekly starting lineup includes: QB, 2RB, 2WR, TE, K, and perhaps 3-5 individual defensive players. Full roster could be set fairly high -- maybe 20? I guess it wouldn't matter -- you could cut and re-acquire players from your school liberally, since nobody else could tough them. Any other logistical thoughts? |

I'll try with WVU. I should be able to field a decent team with Bulger, Jerry Porter, and the Idiot Kicker.

Did you go there? Edit: Nevermind, I misread the premise and thought you had to pick where you went to college, in which case, I was going to claim them.

I'm thinking a team like Miami would dominate the RB game. Maybe we should only have one RB?

I'd love to get involved, but Rutgers isn't exactly stocking the league with scoring threats.

UTEP would be unlikely to score me any points. Lee Mays would be my best bet as the #3 or #4 receiver for the Steelers...

I don't think it said anywhere that WE had to go to the school... William and Mary won't get me much with Darren Sharper and two rookie URFA's ...
I hate to do it as a have a bit of a dislike for them, but i want a chance at winning.. Miami

So, it looks like we have this lineup so far:
Syracuse - QuikSand Michigan - DeTox Tennessee - digamma Texas - sachmo71 USC - TheLionKing West Virginia - Swaggs Georgia Tech - bob Louisville - Ragone Marshall - Greyroofoo Miami - wade moore I'm thinking I will just set up the league, and let people sign up and claim their teams -- putting the college name in the team name so it's clear what schools have been claimed. The assignment of players will be a snap, I'd think - we can just do an auto-draft and then cut and sign players as appropriate. |

Makes sense to me...
Make sure whatever site you choose, that you are not penalized for 'invalid' rosters.. I would imagine some of us will not be able to field a player at every position...

I think what we will do is require everyone to field a complete roster -- but to fill in any open spots with players who are not actually active in the NFL. Should eliminate the problem, I think - Yahoo! always has a lot of players on their list who don't actually make an NFL roster. |

I maxed the league out at 20 teams, with a 6 team playoff. I think we ought to be able to fill up 20 rosters... as long as some people are willing to slide in with teams that probably will get killed by the Tennessees and Miamis of the world.

Great idea (I don't think I have the time to join).
Perhaps next year there could be a penalty for picking the best schools and a bonus for picking the worst. Maybe more of a rotissere (sp?) style scoring system. Before the season, everyone bids on colleges. Your bids could be in terms of multipliers which will affect your final score. For instance, if I want Tennessee, I may have to bid 0.4 to get them. Someone who wants a "worse" school may only have to bid 0.9 to get them. You could work out the details yourself. For now, I think that the way you have it is fine. But an auction system in the future may make it more attractive for those who don't get one of the top five schools. |

I have no idea who the Texas pros are aside from Priest Holmes, Roy Williams, and Ricky "the bongman" William.
I suppose I should investigate that. Would Texas be considered a "big dog"? |

Miami has more good Offensive players than i realized, sweet...
I do agree that someway to make up for the disparity would be a good idea... Maybe some setup where you could get two smaller teams or something..

Maybe set up some type of rating system where maybe 6-10 teams stand by themselves, then another 20-30 you get to choose between two teams and all the scrub schools after that you can combine 3 teams. Nothing scientific about the numbers I used here, just some thought process since I'd like to join but any school I pick now would just be a bottom feeder. |

If we have trouble filling the league to 20 teams... maybe we open it up to states? I guess we'll cross that bridge if/when we get there. No hurry.
