The FOFC Chess Cup
no offense to MattJones, but the thought of playing a game over a week is way too slow for my tastes, although that much time might improve my game considerably I also would be challenged to play some games, because I quite often have to go out of town for 4 days. So I decide to host the first Chess tournament. I wish I had the software to pair on the Swiss system, but unfortunately I do not.
Registration will be open until the middle of next week. Please post here if you want to be included. We will go with a single elimination tournamet. Instead of playing one game per round, each round will be a 3 match long series. Standard points will be used 1 point for a win 1/2 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. If you win the first two games, you do not have to play the third. If after 3 games that points remained tied, you will continue to play games. The lower seeded player will get white twice. Seedings will be determined randomly. If we play more than one tournament then future seedings will be determined by place. The games themselves can be played anywhere online that the two people agree too. I would recommend Yahoo chess, simply because it does not require software and is very easy to use. It also allows you to easily e-mail the results of your matches back to yourself. The results of each game should be posted when done. If time permits, I will try to run some of the close matches through fritz7 and show some analysis of the matches. The time controls of the tournament will be 15 minutes and a 3 second increment. Normally I wouldnt use a increment. This is the only downside to yahoo, that it dosent allow time in a number of moves. This time limit is pretty quick, and should allow you to play all your games in one sitting. Please set aside 1 and 1/2 hours to play your games if possible. Also no using a computer to play for you, or use a program to Analyze the game as it runs. The second part shouldnt be a problem, but I will find out if you run a computer program. They are not as diffucult to spot as one may think. And I dont imagine that anyone here has an ELO of 1600 or 1700. Feel free to post any questions in the thread below Participants Airhog Taco SaintAnselm RPI-Fan samifan24 Ryche TheLionKing Schmidty Patman MattJones4Heisman Shorty3281 BoneGavel Kwhit Wbonnell Primelord BishopMVP 13 players so far, Lets shoot for 16 if possible, otherwise I may have to change a few things in the format Also does anyone have any ideas, or discussion? We have all the players we need. Matches will be posted shortly

I'd like to play as well. Freechess.org is probably the best free site, but yahoo works well enough as well.

What's the problem with it? I always seem to get talented, courteous people when I play there. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I could expound for hours about this, but besides the fact that it requires a java applet to run it (which fails quite often on most computers Ive used), there are a myriad of reasons to read through here:
Yahoo is bad because . . . |

That works for me, I will probably try to play in it too. As for yahoo, im not dictating where the matches be played, Im leaving it up too the two participants involved. To be honest, my favorite place to play is at freechess.org as well. I just didnt want to force everyone to play somewhere that you are best playing with a GUI like Winboard.

Hmm, I don't think I can do anything other than a correspondence style tournament, my staff has already been slammed for playing chess at work so we have to be a little more descreet about things. I'd probably be interested in Matt's tourney though, I'll have to catch up on that thread.
I still would very highly recommend Gameknot though, I think it's a solid site. Good graphics, non-java based, and it will keep a complete list of games (and links to those boards for a while), export pgn files, calculate ratings, show result tables vs various opponents, etc. Also has a pop-up board where you can play out prospective moves. I haven't gotten into any teams or leagues, but it handles that too. It also offers options for days per move (from 3 to 14 I think), and the option to postpone games if needed. Oh, they run tournaments regularly too. I will have to check out freechess.org sometime to compare, it might very well be a better site, but Gameknot has worked for me. its a different type of site. gameknot is more like itsyourturn.com. freechess.org is a real time chess site, not correspondence. i happen to be on the staff at freechess.org, so i may be a bit biased, but i think its the best option for real time (ie the rapid chess games that airhog is wanting).

Ahh, I see. I wouldn't be able to do the real time, unfortunately - can't get away with it at work, and hardly ever have the time at home (kids). As it is I never have time for FOF4! (or civ3, or, well, much of anything else :-) ). I do often get impatient with people not moving fast enough on gameknot though - at least the games in which I'm doing well!

Anybody wants to get some practice in, look me up on FICS (www.freechess.org -- by the way, the best program to connect to FICS imo is called Thief, www.knighttour.org/thief). My handle there is Gorgonian.

I'd like to play, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to commit. How quickly are you expecting to finish the tournament?
btw, I'm pretty rusty now, but once upon a time, I had a USCF rating better than 1600, which, incidentally, is pretty average. |

Also, those of you that have already signed up, do you prefer yahoo, or FICS?

I just tried out FICS for the first time the other day and found it difficult to use. I understand that it has more features but it will take me some time to learn how to use them all. Maybe someone here can give me some tips?
Yahoo was simple enough to figure out. However, either one is fine with me. |

Yeah thats my only beef with FICS, I used to know how to do alot of that stuff on there, but have forgotten most of it.

Code:
I Drew the seeds up by drawing names out of a big manilla envelope. I used the same seeding as the NCAA basketball tournament. This will allow us to play out for first through 6th place. I could extend the brackets even more if people wish to play out all the way too 16. Okay people you have until 12:01am Tuesday of next week to play your first round games. Please contact the person you are playing, and setup match times. If you play on yahoo or fics, and you are the winner you must send me the results of your game via pm. Failure to do so will result in a loss or the replay of that game if the loser agrees, and you can reschedule. Once I recieve your results, I will run them through fritz and analyze the game posting the results here. If you have any questions, or need assitance please contact me.

This might be a dumb question, but does "lower seeded" mean lower number or higher number? For example, which is the lower seed, 4 or 13?

Just to let everyone know, that we are nearly done with round 1. Go check out the brackets if you havent. If you know who your going to play in the second round, go ahead and contact them asap. I will not be home again until tomorrow evening. So I have decided to extend the deadline for 24 hours, but hopefully the rest of the games will be played tonight. The second round will last another week as well. Good luck to everyone
