PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A parent body-slammed ahigh school referee after he ordered the man's wife out of the gym for allegedly yelling obscenities during a basketball game.

The referee, Ronald Bell, 57, was treated at a hospital for a concussion and released after the attack Friday night.

Peter J. Dukovich, 47, was charged with simple assault, assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct. His wife, RaeLynn, who claimed the ref was making bad calls, was cited for disorderly conduct.

After Bell asked security to escort the woman out of the gym, "her husband came down onto the court, picked up the official, threw him on the ground with his back striking first and then his head hit the floor," West Deer Township police Chief Jon Lape said.

Officials say the rivalry between suburban Deer Lakes and Hampton high schools prompted administrators to allow only parents and grandparents to attend the game.

"We have parents who are supposed to be role models but instead we have problems occurring with parents fighting," Lape said.

Dukovich declined to comment Monday.
Dang, if that's what happened with only grandparents and parents there, imagine what it would have been like with some rowdy kids there.

At one of our boys' games this year, a fan of the opposing team came down out of the stands to attack a referee. He was collared by the scorekeeper (who is a teacher at our school). It turned into a big melee.

Turns out the "fan" was the coach's son.

"Assault on a sports official" is actually it's own crime?

Its too bad this did not happen at that school where that spanish teacher was attacked by her crazy ex-husband. Those kids probably would have kicked this guys ass right out of the gym.

My high school team played at our rival and one of their big bully-type players jumped on one of our players while he was going for a rebound, knocking him flat. The Ref booted him and he knocked the ref on his ass. The kid was never allowed to play California high school sports again.

On a funny and satisfying note. In the same game as above (except the year before) the same bully-type kid got into a fight with another basketball player from my high school. The kid from my high school was me, and I broke his freaking nose. Typical melee ensued and he got the boot while we got to shoot technical shots. I even flipped off their whole bench, double barrels, after one of their bench warmers gave me the throat slash sign. Their stands came unglued, but the ref didn't see. I don't usually condone violence and I am a pretty mild -mannered guy, but I enjoyed that.

Lawler - "He just body-slammed the ref!"

It never ceases to amaze me how some people have absolutely no perspective on what's important in life. I realize that different people have different priorities, but to put "the removal of your verbally abusive spouse from a sporting event" on the list of events you're willing to commit assault over is absurd.

And a concussion is no minor injury, especially for a 57 year-old. I hope it was mild and that he didn't lose consciousness, as serious closed head injuries can significantly increase the chances of developing future neurologic problems such as Alzheimer's disease.

I suppose this depends on where you are, but yeah, there are laws like that. I ref a little of everything. At softball games i work here in morgantown, if someone touches you after you eject them, you can apparently file a complaint that will end up with them hanging out in jail for a month and paying $1000 fine.

Let's just say something sort of came up, is why I know about it

This was on talk radio here for a bit. I didn't listen a great deal, but the assault on a sports official is a different crime, depending on the state. Ohio, for example, has the law such that a felony can be charged, otherwise it'd be simple assault, a misdemeanor...however the hell you spell that.

I remember my sophomore year we were playing one of the top ranked teams in the state at our place. The refs were favoring the other team big time, they called every tick-tack foul on us and one time one of their players more or less pushed our guy while he was dribbling into the front row of the stands. Coach got a technical. After the game the refs used to share the same room as the coaches. Well Coach shut the door and just started screaming at them for like 30 minutes, using pretty much every word in the book.

As the refs left there was the town cop, sheriff and highway patrol waiting to escort to refs to their homes. There was people outside waiting on them, it was quite interesting at the time.

That reminds me of a HS game of my schools my senior year. We SUCK at bball so to even be in the sectionals was a minor miracle. Anyways, we're down by 3 on the road with time running out. One of our guys shoots a 3 with 1 second left and is fouled. hits the 1st FT, bricks the 2nd. he then proceeds to miss the 3rd FT on purpose, they get the rebound and time runs out...

BUT WAIT! The ball never hit the rim so the other team gets the ball under the basket with 1 second put back on the clock up by 2. They inbounds short, our guy steals the pass, lands behind the 3 pt line and fires at the buzzer... SWISH! We storm the court going bonkers.

Best Game Ever.

The other teams coach got decked by one of his players and we all thought we were going to get lynched outside the gym.

Hmm the best was my last season when I played football I remember we were losing to one of the best teams in the county. And one of the parents of this kid on our team was cussing at our coach to put in his son. I don't know what this dude said to coach but our just turned around and gave the parent a 3 piece combo to the head. Then the kid saw his dad fighting and jumped in but the funny thing about it was he was hitting both the coach and his dad, the whole team stopped it. But after in the locker room no one could stop laughing at what happen. Hmm now that I think about it, this might not be that funny since I suck at giving stories.
