The 2009 Open Championship
The (British) Open Championship is underway. Don't adjust your eyes. After the morning rounds, the clubhouse leader is KC's own Tom Watson at -5. Would love to see Tom make another run at the title. He came close a couple of years ago in Bruce Edwards' final British Open.

Without question, my favourite golf tournament of the year to watch.

I'd have to say this is my 3rd favorite major. The Masters is #1, US Open being #2.
I guess it's because I don't know the courses over there as well as I do the ones here. |

I hear you. I think the Masters is easily the one I most look forward to - just being in the Northeast it symbolized the beginning of the golf season for us. However, the one with the most excitement and birdies usually ends up being the Open Championship. I also like getting up early to watch the golf...now if it was only shown in high definition...

And appears to have hurt his neck too. My boy Dustin Johnson was coming off an injury himself to tendons in his wrist and took an 8 on one hole and a 7 on another. Somehow I don't think he will be playing this weekend. About fell over when I saw Tom Watson was in the lead-he's this year's Greg Norman I guess. This year's Greg Norman doesn't look like he will be around for the weekend either after opening with a +6. Tiger opened with a +1 round. |

It shouldn't be terribly surprising given that Watson is one of the best players in British Open history. While his putting has always given him trouble, he's still an extremely accurate player even now. The British Open is often more about avoiding trouble than making great shots. When you're as accurate as he is, it's much easier to avoid big trouble. |

It's even a bigger story than Norman in my opinion since the guy is almost 60. I doubt he can hang on and compete but I'll be rooting for him.

It's a different style of golf. The Masters is the same every year.. it just oozes sameness, and spring every year. The US Open is the bar exam of golf. It usually involves playing par golf for four days. The PGA is the forgotten major, really. It comes much later, and doesn't really get the blood going.. but the Open Championship.. well.. it's not about the view.. it's about target golf. A shot may clear one of those pot bunkers by inches, and those inches mean about two shots. It rewards steady putting as well.

I see what you are talking about Foz but it also has a lot of luck built into it. A lot of shots are run up on the green or in areas of the fairway where a bad bounce here or there plays into effect.
But I do love it for the drastic changes in weather. Last edited by Dr. Sak : 07-17-2009 at 07:58 AM. |

The PGA Championship is a pretty good tournament. It has the best field of the year by world rankings is it is not an open or a limited field invitational, and the PGA do not go as crazy as the USGA with their course set up. |

Definitely one of the more exciting big tourneys, as the pros can actually make birdies once in a while there. The 2000 event at Valhalla with Tiger and Bob May going at it was one of the great tournaments of the decade, IMHO. However, keep in mind that while it's not an 'open' setup like the US and British or an oldtimers event like Augusta can be, the PGA is heavily diluted with club pros who don't have a chance in hell of competing for the title.

Been listening to the Open radio online feed. Funny comment by the British announcers that wasn't meant to be funny.
"John Daly taking a nice drag from his fag. You don't see that too often anymore. He tossed aside his fag, took his swing, and then picked up his fag for another drag. But he's got nothing on Jiminez. He's over there smoking a telephone pole." For those that are unaware, the Brits call a cigarette a fag. And Jiminez enjoys cigars. |

Watson with 4 bogeys after his opening birdie. Ouch. Ben Curtis had similar issues after an opening birdie.

Watson bounced back and is now tied for the lead at 5-under after an even-par 70 today.

What an amazing finish for Tom after bogeys on 5 of the first 7 holes. So excited that he'll likely be in the final pairing tomorrow when I'm able to watch. The coverage in KC tonight is going to be crazy. Can't wait for tomorrow morning. |

Watson's run so far is incredible. If there was ever a 50-plus golfer suited for a course and a tournament, it's Watson in the British Open at Turnberry. It would be hard to believe he can keep this up for 36 more holes but this will be a fun ride to watch. If he pulls it off, it will be most amazing sports accomplishment of the year.

Great news on Watson's recovery in the second round, even better news on Tiger missing the cut. I have nothing against the guy, it's just even if he's not in contention the networks feel obligated to show every step he takes, so him finishing +3 or something and just making the cut would have been the worst case scenario for me watching on TV this weekend.

I couldn't believe it last week when I saw betting on tiger was 2:1 and the Field was 4:1 . I quickly put 500 down on the field lol. I wonder if the 2 g's will be in my account tonite, or after its done since he missed the cut

I love Tiger. I'm bummed. Even if you (or most people) hate him, he makes the game more exciting.

I'm glad Tiger missed the cut because I'm just happy that occasionally people get reminded that golf is more than Tiger and Phil.

I guess the thing with me is that I didn't really seriously start watching golf a lot until a I started playing it when I was 13 (1988), so I barely remember Jack seeing Jack play when he was good. I liked guys like Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, and CHI-CHI!!!

Golf was fine, even if significantly less big, before Tiger and Phil, and it will survive after them.
More than the ratings--and I can understand why people don't tune in and watch a bunch of nobodies; I am a huge golf person and I don't a lot of the time--it's the endless line of slightly knowledgeable but not really sportswriters that will prognosticate about this endlessly. Just like with Brett Favre and the New York Yankees, sometimes I just don't want to hear about it anymore. There seems to be an obnoxious 80/20 rule in sports - 80 percent of what gets written is 20 percent of what people care about. 20 is probably understating it, but I think I get my point across. |

2 stroke lead for Watson after 7 holes. He's doing exactly what I mentioned he needed to do. Hit the ball accurately and stay out of trouble. Got a chance to make it a 3 stroke lead with a 20 foot birdie opportunity at 8th hole.

I'm getting 6 - 1 odds on Watson tomorrow, I'm not really sure if I wanna put my money there, but clearly its the best bet with odds. Fisher and Westwood are 7-2 then Goosen at 9-2. Goggin is at 10-1 though too.
I dunno , getting 6-1 on the current leader isn't bad at all. Last edited by k0ruptr : 07-18-2009 at 08:05 PM. |

Hope he wins.

There's something wrong with you if you didn't get emotional watching Tom walk up the 18th fairway. If he does it tomorrow, there won't be a dry eye anywhere. Tom's always been the one golfer I idolize due to him being a hometown hero. Seeing him do this 15-20 years after you assume he would never do it again is SO special. |
