I have the 8th pick in odd rounds, and the 5th pick in even rounds (it's a serpentine draft)

My thoughts: Early on in the draft, I want great players. that's true, but I also want FLEXIBLE players. Take Frank White, for example:

He was GOOD that year, but not great. (.272, 22, 84, which is actually pretty good for pre-juiceball eras).. But if I select him, I can slot him in at one of three positions, which allows me to cherry pick the other two positions during the draft, depending on what's available later on.

Round 1 (8th Pick): Eric Davis (LF/CF/RF) (.277, 27, 81) - 80 Steals and versatitlity make this my pick after I lose out on Wade Boggs (picked one spot before me)

Round 2: (17th Pick): Tony Gwynn (RF) (.329, 14, 59). back when he actually had wheels, 37 SB, probably my lead off guy right here.

Round 3: (32nd Pick): Ozzie Smith (SS) (.280) Great defense and decent speed.. plus he works a lot of counts. Maybe a #2 hitter.

Round 4: (44th Pick) Pete O'Brien (1B) (.290, 23, 90) Decent Power, good average..

Round 5: (56th Pick): Charlie Hough (SP) (17-10, 3.79 ERA), Good WHIP level, even for a knuckleball pitcher. Plus he'll eat innings for me

Round 6: Orel Hershiser (SP)

Round 7: Ron Cey (3B)

Round 8: Oil Can Boyd (SP) Ok, last pitcher for a while, I promise

Round 9: Julio Franco (2B/SS)

We're at the goofy stage of the draft, where you remembe players better off forgotten.. like Ken Phelps

Finally, in 1986, at the age of 31, Phelps got into the major league lineup on a more-or-less regular basis. Although he was normally platooned against left-handed pitchers, Phelps still clocked 51 HR from 1986-87. It was at this time that Phelps' career travails inspired author Bill James to create the "Ken Phelps All-Star" team. As James described it:

Ken Phelpses are just available; if you want one, all you have to do is ask. They are players whose real limitations are exaggerated by baseball insiders, players who get stuck with a label -- the label of their limits, the label the things they can't do -- while those that they can do are overlooked... The Ken Phelps All-Stars [are] a whole teamful of guys who are wearing labels, but who nonetheless can play major-league baseball, and will prove it if they ever get the chance.[1]

In this league as the Doodletown Pipers - I know absolutely nothing about Strat-o-Matic, so I'm here for the experience and to try to stay respectable, and maybe play spoiler here and there.

I picked a couple players live in the draft, but once people started talking about "Strat picks" (Guys who you wouldn't think to draft but are somehow better than real life in this type of game), I figured I might as well just let the computer pick.

I was though, pretty psyched to get Clements/Hurst at the top of my rotation, with the '86 Red Sox being the first team I remember following.

Don't underestimate defense - defense is *critical* in SOM and you'll find it wins and loses games for you more often than you'd expect.

I claim to be an expert with this card set. It was the first SoM set I ever received. I played out an entire season with every team at one point, and pit a fictional team against the 1986 squads and the other all time great teams that came with my set ('27 Yankees, 34 Cards, 61 Tigers, 65 Dodgers, 62 Giants). I kept boxscores of every game in notebooks that were meant only for SoM boxscores. I kept those boxscores through 1993.

Standardized test days were always SOM days for me and my friends. We'd take a half-assed stab at the tests and spend the rest of the day in the back of the class rolling the dice. Good times.

Greaaaatttt.. first game of the year, we have to play Dwight Gooden. Ugh-ly. Not sure who I have to play the rest of the way, but his rotation looks tough.

On the other side, if we shut down Mike Schmidt and Dave Parker, we'll have shut down most of their offense, of course, the flipside is.. we have to stop Mike Schmidt and Dave Parker to do that.

Game 1 is a pitchers duel between two very different pitchers, as the Saints speedy hurler Dwight Doc Gooden, battled knuckleballer Charlie Hough. Ron Cey had the game winning hit, a bases-loaded single in the seventh, and we win on opening day, 2-0.

Charlie Hough had a strong outing and Ron Cey had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at
Three Rivers Stdm '86 where the Boston Pilgrims beat the Suicane Saints by

Boston came up with 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning. The big moment was
provided by Cey who quieted the home crowd when he laced a single bringing in two baserunners. Boston out-hit Suicane for the game, 6 hits to 3.

Hough(1-0) allowed no runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Don Aase recorded his 1st save. Dwight Gooden(0-1) was hit with the loss.
He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 6 walks.

At Three Rivers Stdm '86 the Suicane Saints outscored the Boston Pilgrims 4 to 1.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning Suicane went on top for good scoring 2 runners on 4 hits. That was all the runs Jimmy Key(1-0) needed. Suicane had 9 hits for the afternoon.
