Calling Grandma

Today is Grandma's birthday. Grandma is a wonderful person and has a life full of loving family and friends acquired over 80 years. And all of those loving family and friends want to call to wish her a happy birthday. And the retired ones have nothing to do, so they stay on the phone forever. And Grandma does not have call waiting.

The short of it is--it is almost impossible to get through to Grandma on her birthday. I have been trying for two hours off and on with nothing but busy signals. It reminds me of trying to win radio station call-in contests when I was younger. Indeed, I am willing to bet that--on average--it's easier to get tickets to SuperTramp than it is to get in touch with Grandma on her birthday.

I hope that I have that many people who love me when I'm known as Grandpa.

That's a remarkably introspective comment for a Friday morning. The thought of growing old generally worries me, mainly for the physical deterioration that must inevitably take place. But that's an interesting spin.

Isn't it possible Grandma unplugs the phone on her birthday because she's sick of you all?

You can call me. It's my birthday, and nobody has called me yet.

I guess she's 45 years older than me to the day.
