ESPN NFL Primetime

It is reported on the radio that in 2006, NBC holds exclusive rights to all NFL highlights from Sunday until midnight. No more primetime.

Somewhere Stuart Scott cries.

That is crazy. Primetime was one of the few shows that I actually enjoyed on ESPN (since I can only watch 2 or 3 games on Sunday and want to at least see highlights from all of the other games.)

How is that possible? I thought CBS and Fox were still doing all the day games?

Can't verify the trueness. They were talking about it on the local sports radio show but didn't have all the details.

It would figure Primetime is a gonner anyway with NBC starting coverage at 7:00 with an hour long show leading up to it's game.

The way they were talking is that the highlights would be an issue for non NBC stations.

That is correct. I believe that highlights can not be shown OUTSIDE of an original telecast except by NBC (when their contract starts). I believe that ESPN holds a similar contract now.

Yep, this is true. I found it buried in an article:

"Another plus for NBC is that no one, including ESPN, will be able to air any NFL highlights until midnight or after on Sunday. “So people will be tuning into NBC for highlights,” said McCarley."

Is this why that George Michael Sports Machine is on so late on Sunday nights? I never watch it, but I'm always curious about who tunes in to watch some old guy do a hatchet job on highlights at like 1 in the morning.

There has to be provisions for home teams or something. I know I've seen Patriots hightlights on Patriots 5th Quarter after the game in the evening.

You would think that people would have learned from what has happened to boxing. If you make it more difficult for people to follow you sport, your sport loses its fan base.

Maybe they'll do the show Monday night but by then it will have lost a little of it's luster since the games were a day ago.

I think its only for national networks. Local affiliates may have some more leeway in showing the local team's highlights after the game.

The end of the only good show on ESPN.

I might as well just delete the channel now, because now I have no reason to tune in to ESPN

The information is out there, this really doesn't change anything, IMO. By the time Primetime came on, I'd already seen every highlight 3 or 4 times.

But the NFL is doing it now and it hasn't affected the fan base. The only difference is that ESPN currently holds the highlight rights for Sunday night. The only difference is that now another network will hold the rights.

I think the timing may be off -- I believe I heard that the exclusive highlights rights last until the end of NBC's broadcast, which will almost certainly be before midnight on the East Coast if the NFL pulls their head out of their ass and moves the primetime network games along. I still think one of the reasons for declining MNF ratings is the bloated halftime and longer commercial brakes. Way too many games were starting at 8 p.m. and lasting four hours, which meant they were running to midnight or later in half the country. Crazy.

I'd imagine that seeing the cash cow and critical success Primetime has been for ESPN, NBC will merely duplicate it for their pre-game show. ESPN will probably follow with their own late night Primetime highlight edition immediately following NBC's telecast. The only real difference will probably be that NBC won't do the highlight show as well as ESPN does it now. Berman et al are really in their element on that show.

They better at least export that music they use during the highlights.

Anything that reduces Chris Berman's exposure and will to live is a good thing in my book...

This just means more Berman on baseball telecasts. As annoying as he is sometimes with football, he's unbearable in the baseball booth.

Seems a real shame. NFL Primetime is the only show I really watch with regularity on ESPN any more and now I won't even have that. Primetime is great because of what you said- Berman and Jackson are in their element and it's so well produced: good music and good writing. I know that seems odd to claim there's "good writing" on a sports show, but the format allows them to make a story out of each game. This is the difference between Berman and Jackson's cheesy humor and straight man show versus two wannabe standup jerkoffs on Sportscenter- the mood of the show makes it cheesy and campy instead of stupid.
