My dad worked in Hialeah but we lived in Coral Springs, which is NW Broward. I can't say I enjoyed my time there, but it was livable for the summer months (which is the only time I was there during college/law school). Drive was a bitch for my dad, though. I'm sure there are pockets of nice places nearer to where you need to be, but that was over a decade ago and I was never that familiar with Miami to begin with.

I think the safest place to live near Miami is Jacksonville or perhaps Charlotte.

Depends on where you are working really but I would recommend living in Broward County. I live in the Kendall area by the metrozoo and it is nice enough. The metrorail here is crap and you would pretty much have to live downtown or in a ghetto for it to be worthwhile.

My wife would be working at Jackson Memorial, I would be working from home, Miami Lakes, or Miramar areas.

My wife's family is based around Kendall - thats a quite nice area, although not the cheapest from what I've seen (half the houses look like they could double as hotels imho).

Doral seems like a good central location considering where you work and easier driving route for both. Of course if you don't have children there are plenty of upscale half empty condo buildings in the downtown area. I wouldn't recommend Miami lakes though. I'm down the street from Jackson Memorial south and the main one is downtown Miami I believe. I work downtown as and it takes about an hour to get home to Kendall during rush hour (Doral is my halfway point).
