If there was ever an appropriate time to say 'We hardly knew ye' it was with him.

Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey. Amazing stuff. At 15, the former made all the sense in the world.

As a note, my comment was related to the fact that he was a recluse, not because I didn't know who he was.

That sucks, but on the other hand, I wonder if we'll now get to see anything that he may have written over the past few decades.

My first thought was “I hope they don’t just print everything they find lying around his place.” It always seems like such a breach of trust to publish things posthumously; if the author didn’t think it was fit to publish, it shouldn’t be published.

According to wikipedia:

Quote:
In her memoir, Margaret Salinger describes the detailed filing system her father had for his unpublished manuscripts: "A red mark meant, if I die before I finish my work, publish this 'as is,' blue meant publish but edit first, and so on."[84]

So it sounds like he had this sort of thing planned out.

That wiki article was interesting. "Hey baby, don't go to Yale. Come here with me." Those writing gifts must've been legendary.

He lived about 5 miles away, and the ppl I know of Cornish/Plainfield NH have some great stories of sending JD's followers on some crazy goose chases. The whole community really took pleasure in protecting his privacy.

Great article from The Onion

Bunch Of Phonies Mourn J.D. Salinger | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

Quote:
Bunch Of Phonies Mourn J.D. Salinger

CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything.

I have never read it (but yes, I knew who he was despite my 'Pierre' joke in the FOBL lounge).

Brian Williams tonight described the book as "sex, swearing, and rebellion"...none of which ever really factored into my adolescence.

I probably could have gotten it but only after I realized we weren't talking about the former ABC News correspondent & press secretary to JFK & LBJ.

Yeah, Catcher in the Rye really "spoke to me" when I was 16. When I read it at 30 I kinda thought Holden Caulfield was a whiny bitch who knew a helluva lot less than he thought.

You guys have to realize that Holden Caulfield was not supposed to be a hero. Salinger's point was that Holden could be really convincing and give off this feeling as if he knew what he was talking about, but he lied the whole book and was super whiny and just as phoney as everyone he ripped on. That was the whole point of the character.

Nine Stories is the best thing ever written, by the way.

Brian Williams is a douchenozzle. I'd go out on a limb as to say that, per word written, Salinger changed the face of literature (and pop culture for that matter) as much as Shakespeare did.

Salinger was the best pure writer I've ever read. His command of the english language was and is intimidating. He's the only writer that comes to mind that could write an itemized description of what was in the family medicine cabinet and make it work, the only writer that could make a page long sentence seem not only unpretentious, but completely necessary.

It's a shame that he'll be best remembered for "Catcher." It was a helluva book, don't get me wrong, but it was written as Holden, who was supposed to be a teenager. It had a lot of great content, but it purposely lacked refinement. His other stuff is unreal.

Yeah, except for "Blue Period." Meh.

I'm going with Zooey. That's the best thing ever written. Three characters, one of which is in the tub half of the time...the rest is all writing.

He said the first part of what was in my post. There was more in the segment, but those were the words that summed up the book. The second part was mine.
