What's the Worst Jersey You Could Wear to Your Team's Games?
Saw a reference to this for a specific team, but I thought it might be fun to extend this to any team college or pro.
What's the one jersey that would be the most hateful, disrespectful or stupid to wear to a home game for your team? It can be an opposing player or a player that was at some point on your team. You can go as far back as you'd like, but we're dealing with today's fan base. For me: Bengals- This is easy. A Von Oelhoffen jersey would easily be the worst. Reds- This is tough. They've been so bad that there isn't one hated player. I'd probably guess a Dusty Baker jersey. OSU- This may not work with younger fans, but those who remember would hate to see a Marcus Allen jersey in the horseshoe.

Red Sox - While a Clemens or even Damon jersey would get the fans ire up, a Bucky Dent MFY jersey would probably top the list.
Notre Dame - There was 1 USC RB in particular who was known as the Irish Killer, for more recent fans the BC kicker that derailed the 93 NC run might make it or anything Tyrone Willingham-related (bonus: works at UW too!) UMass - anything BC or UConn. Jim Calhoun is probably the most despised person, although Mike Jarvis and John Chaney were up there when basketball was good. Football-wise maybe an Armanti Edwards App St jersey, but I wasn't even mad at him, just impressed. Ricky Santos from UNH also comes to mind. Patriots - Bernard Pollard? Parcells and Mangini both had their time on the Jets, but we got the upper hand on each, so not so much. Maybe an Adam Vinatieri Colts jersey? Celtics - Kobe at this point. Laimbeer, Isaiah or Magic/Kareem from the 80's? Bruins - Canadiens no doubt. Saku Koivu is probably the most prominent recent one, obviously you have to go back to the old-timers like Richard or Guy LaFleur. Aaron Ward had his moment, but a month later was traded to the Bruins. |

I would say a Francisco Cabrera Braves' jersey to a Pirates' game or Rich Rodriguez shirt or jersey to a WVU game.

Dolphins - The Jets and Bills don't have anyone good enough worth disliking so perhaps a Brady jersey. But someone might be more likely to get verbal abuse by wearing a Nick Saban mask instead.
Braves - Probably one of the Mets' better players like Wright/Reyes/Santana. If anyone owned a Jim Leyritz Yankees jersey and someone recognized it without a name on the back maybe. Mike Hampton Astros jersey? This one is kind of hard. Magic - A Cavs O'Neal jersey for next season. Rockets McGrady jersey. Maybe a Fran Vazquez Barcelona jersey although I blame management for that. Manchester United - Any Liverpool shirt but especially ones with Gerrard or Carragher on the back. A Manchester City Tevez shirt. These would be worse than any of the others above, the Dolphins/Braves/Magic have easy-going fanbases by American standards (which are less crazed than European sports fans in general). |

A little old-school for today's crowd but a Jack Tatum jersey to a Patriots game.
edit: in a 1978 preseason game, Tatum hit WR Darryl Stingley and he spent the rest of his life as a quadriplegic. Stingley died a couple of years ago. Being a quadriplegic was a big part of why he died so young. Last edited by Castlerock : 09-04-2009 at 02:27 PM. |

Think it's more fun if you're talking about a guy who was awful/an albatross for your team...
Mets: Mo Vaughn, Bobby Bonilla, and Anthony Young come immediately to mind...but no one would probably be worse than Jim Fregosi. Knicks: any jersey made in the last 10 years. Frederic Weis if they ever made one. Rangers: Bobby Holik, Pavel Bure, Wade Redden 49ers: JJ Stokes, Jim Druckenmiller, Giovanni Carmazzi, Gabe Wilkins |

We got to post #29 without a Terrell Owens reference? Could any Eagles, Cowboys or 49ers fan get inside their own stadium wearing a home team jesery with Owens on the backside? I mean, I was expecting that to be the second or third reply.

For the Packers, right now, Favre's Viking jersey.

Having given it a bit more thought, there is a big overlap of Saints fans and LSU fans at Saints games. And the real mouth-breathers, the kinds of people who might throw a beer at you for wearing the wrong jersey, seem much more motivated by LSU fandom than Saints fandom.
So, I think that the worst jersey you could wear to a Saints game might be a U. Florida or U. Alabama jersey or some Nick Saban-themed jersey. |

So much potential here:
Cubs: Any jersey with the name BARTMANN on the back. Pierzynski is a good call too. Bears: Favre is still universally despised around here. There's also a long string of bust picks that would raise some ire from the local fans. I saw someone wearing a Curtis Enis jersey a few weeks ago. A little piece of my soul died that day. Blackhawks: I get all sorts of dirty looks around here when I wear my Red Wings jersey...that's always fun. I've got to think that a Roenick or Belfour jersey would probably get a reaction too. Chiefs: Any Raiders jersey will do. Jayhawks: Why do I have the sudden urge to buy a Mizzou jersey of some sort and get MBBF printed on the back?

Why's that? Tevez scored the goal that kept West Ham in the Premeirship. Sheffield United fans might have a problem with a Tevez West Ham shirt considering all the controversy involved in his signing for them and the eventual fine West Ham had to pay because of it. Not necessarily my team, but I have to imagine that an Elway jersey at a Browns game is still asking for trouble.

Tevez actually gets a warm welcome at West Ham when he plays there because of the whole "keeping us in the Premier League thing". And IMHO, I don't think wearing a Man City Tevez top to a Man Utd game would invoke much hostility. Most Man Utd, nay, every Man Utd fan wanted Tevez to stay, but management didn't. The hostility would just come from wearing a Man City jersey, not the name on the back. Especially not Tevez's name. |

God, that'd be horrible. Let's see: Broncos - Phillip Rivers jersey. Any Raiders jersey. Jay Cutler jersey. CU Buffs - Bradley Van Pelt CSU jersey. OK State - Pick an OU jersey. Any of them will do, we hate them all. Nuggets/Rockies - Through years of ineptitude, there really isn't a single jersey that really impacts either team. |

That would be the same way anywhere in the South I think. College football is where the most passionate football following goes. (For better and for worse.) A Georgia jersey will probably get a worse reaction in a NFL Florida stadium than another NFL jersey will. An OU jersey would get a stronger reaction at a Texans game than a Colts jersey. And yes, anything with Nick Saban on it would probably be the worst thing to wear at a football game in Louisiana. The odd part is, I really think in the heart of hearts of LSU fans, that there isn't THAT much true hate for Saban. I think it comes from the fact that over the years, LSU fans just don't have anyone to hate. Ole Miss has been bad more than they have been good in football, and they are the closest thing to a historical rival that LSU has. So Saban at a SEC school just finally provided that Southern football hated rival outlet that LSU has missed most years. |
