Looking for some football-related FOFC Competition?

Coming Monday, Rev Rew productions introduces the ZFL, an interactive franchise simulation allowing FOFC competitors to go head-to-head in a friendly, or not so friendly, game of outmanaging other FOF-heads.

The debut season will require 10 willing GMs to take part in a game of franchise football management that can be played entirely on the FOFC board. No downloads, no programs--just chatter, banter, and the occasional trash-talking as 10 gridiron gurus duke it out for the ZFL crown.

The inaugural season sign-up goes on the dynasty board Monday. Watch for it!

I'll get the details on the Dynasty board on Monday, detailing how it works. Then, first come, first serve as 10 GMs sign up, picking their team. The first season is pretty much set up (unless some guys want to do some hot trading quick), but as with real GMs, the action is in the offseason.

The game is a custom-built card game, where the original rosters, the improvement, decline, or injury of players, and available rookie class are determined by a standard set of Rook cards. The matchups themselves are determined through a complex mathematical process which matches key players against an opponents' key players in a given game. All of that, however, happens on my computer.

The GMs get involved by directing their team, including naming it (and players), rooting for their squad, conducting trades and drafts, etc.

Free agency isn't built in yet, but after a season or two, the league may evolve.

Rook cards? As in with the bird holding cards in his hand? If so, I want to shoot the moon.

Do we need anything special (software, cards?) to play?

You have a computer program that flips a coin?

Sounds interesting though.

You won't need anything to play except the willingness to make it interesting with your own participation. If you want to sit back and ignore what happens with your team, or snooze around draft time, keep the roster open for someone else.

As for the smart remark about coin flipping.....no, the statistical rankings of a team's players are matched against another team's at key positions to determine the relative effectiveness of a particular matchup. For example, one team's QB and receivers are matched against the other's Linebackers and secondary to determine the relative success of that aspect of the game. The game is then subdivided into similar matchups, recorded by a spreadsheet program, and results of games can be determined in about 20 seconds. All of this to say it's a bit boring to pour over and explain, and I knew you were just kidding anyways.

The Rook cards were simply a way for me to quickly create a random set of 56 outcomes divided into four classes, and thus manipulate probability to produce rosters and next year's draft class--which, by the way, is shaping up to be a great draft. The improvement, decline, and injury of players is also done using a modified set of probability calculations, again based on the 56 (in this case, 57) cards of the Rook game. I could have done the same with a standard set of 52, but decided I liked the additional 4 factor.

The numerical qualities of your individual players, however, will not be made perfectly clear to you, but only through the thin veil of your scout's reports. All of which have been generated for the first year. When you sign up for a team, the ESPN summation of your team's chances will be made public, and your individual scouting report will be PM'd to you.

I'm excited about it. I hope we get 10 willing and active GMs right off the bat.

The ZFL signup thread is on the Dynasty board! We need 10 GMs. We've got one slot reserved for Tucker, but there are 9 more to go! Sign up quick!
