I have an NVidia GeForce 7800 GT w 256mb

LOVE IT!!!

I went from an ATI Radeon 9800 XT. It turned out to be a huge upgrade.

You need a new motherboard with PCI Express specific slots on it. Most newer boards have them now, and in fact today I saw a 'budget' board with PCI express.

PCI Express is a fairly new type of slot. Think of it as AGP+. PCI Express cards cannot go in PCI slots.

ATI 9600 Pro(I Think its "Pro")

It works great, but then again since I play mostly text games...The last three video cards I've had would be doing about the same.

ATI Radeon X200, but I think it might be integrated.

I also have an open PCI-Express port, which shall be filled in the reasonably near future* by a Radeon X800 or so.

* "reasonably near future" should be taken to mean "at some point in the current century."

I upgraded from a Radeon 9600 to a GeForce 6600GT. My 3DMark score and overall game performance improved noticably. These are different generations: the 6600 is more equivalent to a Radeon X600 than a 9600.

If you're still looking you should try to find the 6600gt OC by BFG technologies. I was reading an article a couple month ago that showed it blowing away just about everything else in its class. I was even tempted to get one to replace my Radeon 9800pro.

I don't think the BFGs blow everyone away, but they do some minor overclocking that gives them an edge. However BFG is just a good company and they offer lifetime warranties on their cards(at least they did). Hell, how many other video card companies offer cards with a waterblock instead of a heatsink. My 6800 Ultra is a BFG.
