More offensive holiday ads: cars or jewelry
I want in on all this polling action.
'Tis the season for horrible holiday advertising, and I'm stuck deciding which I hate more, the ads suggesting everybody's buying their friends and family brand new Lexus SUVs every Christmas, OR the unbearably treacly jewelry ads in which everybody breathlessly melts into puddles at the thought of some mall diamonds. ...or maybe you've got your own favorite torture. Target's series of 'Marshmallow World' ads that seems to be on every five minutes is also charging up my charts with a bullet.

Not a holiday ad, but an honorable mention to the bud light "up for anything" adverts
"We saw this guy buying bud light in a supermarket, so we decided to ruin his entire home and garden!" |

It always made me feel better to think that if every kiss begins with Kay, so does every divorce.

I say the car ads - jewelry is a perfectly reasonable thing to get as a gift for Christmas. A car is not - I mean if I got a car for someone they would probably be mad I got the wrong car or didn't involve them in the process of picking it.

The thing that gets me about the "car as a gift" thing is that you're either (a) paying cash for it which is nuts, or (b) condemning them/you to monthly payments, which is hardly a gift. Last edited by DaddyTorgo : 11-30-2014 at 06:39 PM. |

My wife had someone she knows post a pic of a gift car on FB - I forget what it was, but it wasn't cheap. Basically the woman is married to a dude who is either loaded or throws money around like he is (later she was posting pics from Maui or something). But yeah - there would be no practical way for someone like me to do that. We both work, and that would be dictating how both of our money was going to be spent. Not something you can just go and do.

This. That isn't a decision that should be made without the input of both. Wife and I make a good living and could easily afford a luxury car but if I just went and got one for her she would be pissed. |

My impression is these titans of industry buying white Lexus' are paying straight cash. Santa does have a great lease offer on a Mercedes for you though. |

We get jewelry ads 365. The only way the car ads could be more annoying would be if McCartney and Wings were playing in the background

There was this awful billboard in my town from (I think) Kay Jewelers.
It had a picture of a big diamond ring, and the quote was "She'll worship the fairway you walk on." It made me want to set the billboard on fire. |

I noticed they changed the commercial a bit this weekend after DS crushed it (rightly so). It's still annoying as fuck though. I'm sure it was coincidental but you never know.

I think the hate on the gifting car ads is a bit silly.
The idea is to get you and your spouse talking about the car, whether you like it, can afford it, and truly want it. The target audience being those inclined to actually purchase a (new) car in the near future. If you've had those discussions already with your spouse, and they have agreed that they do want the car, then I can't imagine "gifting" it to be an unwelcome thing. Presumably you have actually discussed car colors/options/etc. If you know your spouse to be picky. |

Since I work for a car company, I vote jewelry. Fuck that shit. Cars make wonderful Christmas gifts. Well, certain brands do. Lexus is not one of these brands.
