Best and worst football announcers
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ers/index.html
The best and worst football announcers, according to dr. z. I'd say I pretty much agree with his rankings, although I'd give ABC (Aikman, Buck and Collingsworth) about 1/2 a star and maguire, theisman and patrick a negative. The main announcing teams for the Panthers averaged about 3 stars (Pitts/Ryan, Alberts/Baldinger, Brennaman/Pearson), so its nice to see I'm getting some decent announcers. |

Joe Buck is the most annoying, self-serving announcer that I've ever heard (in both baseball and football). He's really doing his father an injustice.

I actually like Buck most of the time (although he way overreacted to the Moss thing). And as much as it kills me to say, I think Aikman does a good job. They just need to dump Collingsworth.
The ESPN team is awful, and I agree that the Monday night team has pretty much fallen as well (although I think Tofoya is better than alot of their recent sideline reporters). |

The team that does Lions games is awful...
I think I'm the only guy on the planet who likes Dan Dierdorf though. I loved his reaction to Darius' clothesline... Collingsworth is much better in the booth than the studio.

There is no better football announcer than Keith Jackson. I'll watch any game he's calling.

Eric Dickerson on the sidelines was pretty bad, although he wasn't the announcer of the game.

The Lions usually get the Maas or Pitts team. They are abysmal. Bill Maas kept refering to Artoose Pinner as Harold Pinter.

I found Bill Maas to be almost completely unlistenable.
CBS 's telecasts always bothered me, too. They just seemed Amateurish when compared to fox or ABC. |

I haven't heard a network announcer broadcast a Steelers game in probably 4 to 5 years. Turn on the TV, mute the volume, turn on the radio, and listen to Myron Cope.
Oooom Hahhh, Double Yoi !!

Joe Buck does a lot of local Cardinal games so I really enjoy him when he is a homer. (Buck actually makes me enjoy Al Hraobsky!) But he seems too much like a network shill when he does nationwide games. The call of the Moss pants sounded like the Hiendenburg disaster.
I also don't understand the hatred for the ESPN crew. I am not the world's biggest Theisman fan, but the other two don't bug me at all. My worst two have to be Salomon Wilcots (sp?) and Steve Tasker. I don't know if the sub .500 Bengals ever had any other announcers besides one of these two tools during their 10+ year "glory" run. I wish I could turn them off and listen to the radio, but it lags wayyyy too far behind and I get calls of plays that happened like 30 seconds ago. So I am stuck with either no sound or these guys. BTW, since I just realized ALL the references to Cris Collinsworth were mispelled as Collingsworth, people wouldn't realize my post in jest of "Collingsworth?", it's like the plague I tell you, one person mispells it and everyone follows suit.

I'd give that award to Bob Costas, frankly, but since NBC doesn't have baseball anymore, we're spared. Though he did write a good book on how to fix baseball!

If you think he's unlistenable as a tv announcer.. you should have heard his sportstalk program.. Him.. Whitlock on the same show.. was like a daily trainwreck Only thing that saved that show was Grunhard.. I'm sure kcchief will see this and agree as far as announcers go.. Kevin Harlan is fantastic.. and you can tell he studies every week Last edited by Ragone : 01-13-2005 at 07:43 PM. |

nice article - I like that he actually seems to be reviewing THIS season, not just a lifetime achievement thing.
I personally like Buck (and Aikman and Collinsworth). And, I freaking HATE Phil Simms and the ESPN retards with a passion.

I guess the only rating I didn't like is that the ESPN team is my favorite announcers .

Joe Buck is a person who should be shot (along with Tim "Derek is My Love" McCarver) on sight for the public good- seriously. Such a self serving hypocritical sonofabitch who does "Leon" commercials in the middle of a fucking World Series Game, and has the gall to call someone else classless.

I liked Maas, Grunhard, and Frank Bohl on 810 but now it's Maas and Whitlock which is just hideous. 810 came out of that split looking great- they lose Jim Rome, Whitlock, Maas, and Grunhard and instead replace Maas and Grunhard with George Brett and then pilfer Soren from 980 to take the space formerly occupied with Jim Rome. If that's not lemonade from lemons, I don't know what is. SI
