Post Wyoming Wildfire 2021

This thread marks the progress of the Wyoming Wildfire, a franchise being operated under the GroupThink concept. This is the year 2021-year five of the fledgling expansion team's existence.

If you'd like to read through the details from our earlier years, including some helpful background on the concept and the rules involved, here is a link:

Wyoming Wildfire, 2017
Wyoming Wildfire, 2018
Wyoming Wildfire, 2019
Wyoming Wildfire, 2020

The basic concept of GroupThink (a deliberately temporary name that seems to have stuck) is that we have several forum participants working together to manage an FOF 2001 franchise. Several people have defined roles, and some others are just ad-hoc contributors, which is welcome.

The principal managers of the team are:

Owner: QuikSand
General Manager: TheRoyalOne
Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Veterans): RPI-Fan
Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Young): Daimyo
Offensive Coordinator: FishFan
Defensive Coordinator: Subby
Special Teams Coordinator: TheDawgsAreOut
Salary Cap and Financial Advisor: ez
Director of PR & Marketing: Fritz

We've had very helpful participation from a number of others, and welcome more. The job of the people listed above manage the various input, as it relates to their field, and to implement things into a sound strategy.

We have sought to find one central location for the game files, but have instead seemingly settled on a one-step-at-a-time system, where each manager seems to post wherever it suits him best. I recommend searching through the most recently active threads in the main forum, where you will likely find a link.

Important: By downloading the file. You are agreeing to play by our rules. Chief among them is no simming ahead. If you want to join in and comment, fine-but do not interfere with everyone's enjoyment by violating this concept.

That said, we'll be having several different people manage their portions of the season, and we'll use this thread as a home for the reports and updates on our progress. Discussion and debate about team decisions and so forth will continue to be housed in the main forum, generally in threads labeled with the "WW:" or "GroupThink:" indicators.

There are two standing links, where our Offensive and Defensive Cordinators have posted an ongoing annitated depth chart, which might help focus and spur discussion. You may locate them here:

Wildfire Offense
Wildfire Defense

Feel free to read along, look around, and chime in-- your input is welcome…

RE: Coaching & Scouting staff

As we embark on year 5 in the dawning of our franchise, we once again are looking at our staff. In the past few years I have felt pressure to change for various reasons and requests from certain high-ranking individuals in our organization. The high-rate of turnover has caused many facets of our organization to feel unorganized.

With the bills and the losses piling up instead of the profits and the wins, I'm taking a firm stance that the lead scout and coach that I bring in this year will be with us for the tenure of their contracts or mine, whichever terminates first. As such, I've taken into consideration our teams needs and various recommendations and went after our 2021 staff.

I also followed ez's recommendations regarding ticket prices. Hopefully we can begin getting out of the red in the near future.

New Head Scout: Anthony Hagar, $200,000 3 years
New Head Coach: Richie Sampras, $2,000,000 3 years

We will now need to make a tough decision on who to franchise this year.

File can be found through my signature link.

TRO, good work in managing our front office costs so effectively. With the accompanying reduction in support costs, we are hopeful for a rebound in the team's operating bottom line. With a new stadium imminent, our path toward financial solvency now seems to be fairly straightforward-- we need to perform on the field, and build fan interest.

2021 Free Agency Update

The Wildfire came into this year's free agency market looking for help at QB, and two solid options were available. Having traded away QB Marcus Preston to Oakland just a year ago, we opted instead to go for Minnesota's starter Nicky Smith. Smith looks like a solid all-around guy, who had some struggles last season in his first as a starter in the league. We believe that a little maturation and our improving offensive line will help him thrive in the Wildfire offense. He accepted a 2yr deal worth $40m.

(Incidentally, QB Marcus Preston has stepped in in St. Louis, to the tune of $114m over 5 years. Our own Zach McCorvey got $20m+/yr from Clevelend.)

We also worked out new deals with two of our defensive stalwarts, CB Ellis Alumbaugh and DT Wes Barton. Both are solid veterans, and their new deals help to free up cap room for this season. FB Phil Walker accepts an additional minimum salary year on his current deal, keeping him aboard through next year (at the club option, since there is no bonus attached).

As we moved into the later FA stages…

FB Mitchell Sutton comes home to Wyoming, accepting a 3yr deal for $10.4m. He looks to step in as our main lead blocker-he'll be the best up-front man we've had, and should be a good fit in this offense. Sutton is a U. of Wyoming alumnus as well, and should help to stoke the home fires a bit.

Safety Kenneth Dahlin is another late-stage FA signee. He is a no-risk pickup, a decent safety with some return ability, who did not demand a signing bonus-and looks to earn a job on the team. His deal is 3yrs, just under $6m.

LB Wesley Sloan has been a solid contributor for the Wildfire for the last three seasons, and we work out a deal for him in the final stage of free agency-he re-signs for a new 3yr deal worth $21.1m.

As we head toward the draft, we still have a few more players under contract who may not be aboard when the dust settles. LB Roderick Erdahl signed a lucrative deal last season, and may not be earning his keep. FB Leonard Winters has presumably been replaced with the new addition of Sutton. RB Billy Madison may have only a tenuous grip on the final RB roster slot. Their fates will be determined before training camp.

We head toward the draft with trade offers for RB Andy Ellis and QB Nicky Smith. Both have some troubles with our "fairness test." The deal for Ellis would be possible if we cut some cap room, but we are forbidden in general from dealing a player who was just signed-so the offer for Smith is off the table, even if we were interested.

That said, we prepare to head into the rookie draft period.
