The Southern California Trojans, a Strat-O-Matic Baseball Dynasty
So back in March a guy from work asked me if I was interested in joining a local Strat-O-Matic league. Up until that point I had never played Strat, heck I had never actually seen the cards up close till then either. I was going to be taking over a team that had basically been run into the ground and didn't have any high draft picks for the upcoming 2010 draft. I was basically being thrown to the wolves...
A little background. From what I've gathered so far this specific league Really Ultimate Baseball League (RUBL) http://rublstrat.com has been around for about 30 years and most of the team owners (12 teams 10 owners) have been in the league for much of that time. There is one other guy that joined the league last year (2009) so he's sort of taken me under his wing and taught me the ropes this season. My background, I've played OOTP for years the Real World Baseball League ( The RWBL ) has been my home for years even with a couple year hiatus for the league. Other than that I've been in a fantasy baseball keeper league for years. Strat is a different beast altogether but you can loosely use keeper league knowledge to help to build your team, the main thing is to remember you are dealing with how players already performed more so than you are worry about how they will do in the future (although that does come into play since the league is a keeper league with a yearly draft). So this is where I was before the draft. Remember I really didn't understand that much about the game and what was happening, all I really knew is that I didn't have any picks in the first three rounds of the upcoming draft (I had pick 4.4 and 5.5) SP Scott Baker SP AJ Burnett SP Aaron Cook SP Matt Garza SP Luke Hochevar SP Brandon Morrow P Sean Marshall RP Octavio Dotel RP Hideki Okajima RP Chris Ray RP Brian Wilson RP Joe Nelson C Brian Schnider C Miguel Montero C Chris Iannetta 1B Lyle Overbay 1B Mike Jacobs 1B Jason Giambi 1B Chris Davis IF Nick Punto 2B Kaz Matsui IF Jeff Baker 2B Mike Fotenot 3B Ian Stewart 3B Edwin Encarnacion SS Marco Scutaro SS Cristian Guzman SS Mike Aviles LF Eric Byrnes LF Fred Lewis OF Ryan Spilsborghs 2B/LF Alfonso Soriano CF Marlon Byrd CF Jody Gerut CF Nate McLouth OF Felix Pie CF Willy Taveras RF Nelson Cruz RF Jose Guillen RF Brad Hawpe OF Matt Joyce Realizing my team was going to suck in 2010 the guy that got me to join helped me quickly make a trade of Marco Scutaro for 2011 2nd, 2012 3rd, and SS Ryan Theriot. Which filled some gaps I had in my draft for the upcoming seasons.

Orange Trojans 2010 Draft (and toss pile pickups)
Here is what I got in the 2010 draft.
4 4 Randy Wells Orange Trojans 40 5 5 Luke Gregerson Orange Trojans 53 6 5 Kris Medlen Orange Trojans 65 9 5 Ramon Santiago Orange Trojans 101 10 5 Jorge De La Rosa Orange Trojans 113 11 5 Adam Kennedy Orange Trojans 125 12 5 Bob Howry Orange Trojans 137 I picked up these guys in the toss pile (basically the pile everyone throws their guys into when they are cutting down to their 40 man roster). 101 2 Zach Duke Orange Trojans 1202 101 8 Jim Thome Orange Trojans 1208 Brett Cecil Here are the players I tossed after the draft (and my feelings on what they did in 2010) to get down to my 40 man roster (I'll post my roster in the next post) Sean Marshall - had a great 2010 and will be great for someones bullpen next season Chris Ray - another MR that will probably help someone out next season Brian Schnider - nothing of note Mike Jacobs - nothing of note Jason Giambi - nothing of note Chris Davis - Hits righties well, but I projected that he wasn't going to end up doing much for the Rangers and I guessed right. Mike Fontenot - nothing of note Mike Aviles - probably could have helped me, hit well this year, but if I remember correctly he's not good defensively Eric Byrnes - nothing of note Jody Gerut - nothing of note Jose Guillen - nothing of note |

See that's the rub, McLouth in 2009 ain't half bad so for playing him in 2010 it's a decent choice, but in 2010 he's going to suck mightily so next year I'll probably keep him on my 40 man roster but no where near the 25 man. |

The Orange Trojans, went 1-2 against fellow cellar dweller Del Mar Stallions. The Trojans also went 2-4 against the team they traded their 2011 1st Draft to (a team they went 0-14 against before finally winning in the third game this weekend). These results have major implications on who may end up with the 1st overall pick of the draft... As it stands the Trojans are 41-109 and the Stallions are 46-109. 162 games make the season. There is very little change the Trojans will win 5 more games this season with 12 left.

Posted above at how my cards are laying out for next season. Nelson Cruz is going to be a beast. Jeff Baker is funny because his card kills lefties, but he can't do shit against a righty.

Here is my pitching staff next season, getting Kershaw AND Haren for basically Buster Posey or Jason Heyward (and Luke Gregerson) was an amazing deal.

Only was able to play one series this week went 1-2. I have 9 games left all against the same team (the owner has been a real slacker with showing up to game nights all season).
I'm starting to look towards the draft and what I'm going to have to do to start improving my team. I'm not going to push to improve much for 2011, looking more towards 2012, I'm not planning to throw in the season, but considering the team I have I should get the #1 pick next season. Which means I need to start thinking about who is going to come up in 2011 in the MLB since they will have cards for the 2012 draft. |

Well the season is over. 43-119 was our overall record with the worst record in the league. I barely edged out the other worst team by 1 game.
Here are some statistics to look over. Pitching

Ok the finalized draft list has been sent out. Our 2011 draft is on March 11th. Here are the picks I have.
2.1 2.8 4.3 5.2 5.8 5.11 6.12 8.3 9.1 10.1 11.1 12.1 So far it appears as if the guy I want to draft at 2.1 will be available and will be a steal at the spot (Austin Jackson). I will probably attempt to get a 1B, MI, or SP at 2.8 and then hope to be able to get some stuff as I wait for my 4th and 5 round picks. One thing to look forward to is that I will have the first pick in the discard pile, and I'm sure some teams discards will be better than the pieces I currently have on my team. |

I've traded my 2.8 pick for a #1 in 2012 (will probably be somewhere around 1.8-1.12 in 2012). My team has way of competing in 2011 anyway so an extra #1 in next years draft could be a goldmine.

Draft day is Friday. Odds are I will get Austin Jackson with my 2.1 pick. That will be a nice building block. After that I'm not sure what exactly I will pick up but I'm hoping something falls to me at 4.3 that will improve my offense.

Well draft day came and the Trojans were unable to get Austin Jackson at 2.1. The team that drafted 1.10 went against his projected choice which set off a trade for the 1.12 spot that ended up getting Austin Jackson. The Trojans ended up with Logan Morrison. Not a bad card or player, but his current defense leaves something to be desired (he's a 5e8).
Here is how the first two rounds of the draft went. Overall Round Pick Team Player 1 1 1 Gotham Buster Posey 2 1 2 Garyville Jason Heyward 3 1 3 Del Mar Carlos Santana 4 1 4 Del Mar Mike Stanton 5 1 5 Springfield Pedro Alverez 6 1 6 Grosse Pointe Stephen Strausburg 7 1 7 San Gabriel Daniel Hudson 8 1 8 San Gabriel Neftali Feliz 9 1 9 Grosse Pointe Starlin Castro 10 1 10 Baskerville Jhoulys Chacin 11 1 11 Baskerville Madison Bumgarner 12 1 12 Canyon Gulch Austin Jackson 13 2 1 Orange Logan Morrison 14 2 2 Fryburg Daniel Bard 15 2 3 Garyville Joaquin Benoit 16 2 4 Fryburg Jose Bautista 17 2 5 Springfield Brian Matusz 18 2 6 San Gabriel Even Meek 19 2 7 Gotham Aubrey Huff 20 2 8 Death Valley Daric Barton 21 2 9 Del Mar Ike Davis 22 2 10 Grosse Pointe Jose Tabata 23 2 11 Baskerville Jaime Garcia 24 2 12 Death Valley Colby Lewis |

The pitchers were mainly to just cover my relieving staff since the only holdover from last year is Dotel. Cashner ended up getting released so I could get to my 40 man roster. Valdez is an awesome SS defensively, so I will be using him till his at-bats run out. Here is my complete roster. So through 51 games the Orange Trojans are 12-39 and 21 games back in their division. I'm well on my way to either the #1 or #2 pick (not that I'm bragging, since I really do try and win). Highlights for the season so far...
Matt Joyce has a 1.122 OPS in 32 games and 90 at-bats, 7 HRs, 19 extra base hits, .311 BA, .400 On Base, .722 slugging. All but 3 of these at-bats are against righties. Jeff Baker continues to feast on lefties batting .306 with a .918 OPS. Wilson Valdez has been an awesome fielder to have a SS, too bad he's only batting .142 (not to mention the 13 double plays he has hit into)... I changed my philosophy about 12 games ago and decided to field the best possible fielding team for as long as I can this season. My offense regressed because of it, but I'm enjoying not giving up so many stupid plays just because someone can't reach the ball. Tyler Clippard has been a great reliever. 2.63 ERA, 1.024 WHIP. Lowlights. Kershaw went 0-7 till he finally got his first win, he's pitched ok, but he really got hurt by our terrible defense through the first 40 games. I've already use 47% of his innings for the season and we are only 51 out of 162 games in! Dotel has pitched atrocious even with trying to keep him only for righties and with no one on, I've been hurt a lot by him (fortunately we are usually out of the game when he's pitching so it doesn't really matter). Kris Medlen and Brandon Marrow are probably not the best back of the rotation guys to have, both have WHIPs over 1.500 and ERAs over 5 (so does our #3 Garza). I have three guys that normally start batting under the Mendoza line. (Valdez, Quintero, and Overbay) 33 Homeruns in 514 at-bats doesn't really scare the opponents. We only produce 3.098 runs per game, while giving up a 5.14 ERA, something has to change there next year. 2012 Outlook. Looking forward to drafting Hosmer or Hellickson with my top pick, hoping some more prospects will start playing sooner rather than later, the catcher from Toronto is looking nice as well. As for the players I have, Joyce is playing awesome, along with Morrison (too bad he got hurt), Ianetta looks like a bounce back candidate. On the pitching front the top three of my rotation Garza, Haren, and Kershaw might get some improvement next season. |

I'm hoping to make a trade with another team to shore up my SS issue. Going to try and trade a couple of my 3rd round picks for JJ Hardy and hopefully a 2nd. We will see how that works, but it could really help make me a top half team next season.

Well the Trojans made a trade this week. Sending two of my 3rd round picks (3.1 and probably 3.6) for J.J. Hardy at the end of the year. Filling the gaping hole at SS. Hardy should be about a 2e7 with nice pop against both lefties and righties. Wish he had a little better onbase but there are no SS in the draft and he can play all season giving me some MUCH needed pop, especially when I compare him to my current options of Wilson Valdez, Nick Punto, and Christian Guzman.

Projections are showing that J.J. Hardy is a 2e8 at SS, which would awesome if true, plus he's got 50 TB chances against Lefties and 40 TB chances against Righties so things are looking good at SS.

Ok so the season is almost over (only 12 more games to go) but I'm already looking to next year. Here are some projections on my teams performance next season, showing RAA for the players in a 12 team league. This is before the draft. I have some definite areas needed for improvement.

End of season roster notes
C Humberto Quintero - C/1B?/3B? Chris Ianetta + looking forward to him actually having a starting job C Lou Marson - does hit LH though so depending on draft may keep 1B Matt LaPorta - 1B Derrek Lee + because of LH results 1B Lyle Overbay DROP 1B/2B/3B/RF/LF? Jeff Baker + because of LH results and utility Retired Christian Guzman DROP SS JJ Hardy ++ Starting SS 1B/LF/RF Eric Hinske - 3B Chris Johnson - 2B/3B/SS Nick Punto Utility 3B Ian Stewart 40 Man 2B/SS Ryan Theriot - but may have to keep if I can't get a 2B 2B/3B/SS Wilson Valdez Utility 1B/2B/3B/RF? Adam Kennedy Utility LF/1B? Logan Morrison ++ penned in at LF all season, although his defense hurts LF Alfonso Soriano + hits lefties has power, can't field OF Ryan Spilborghs DROP RF/LF Matt Joyce ++ starting RF against righties, wish he hit lefties, love his defense CF Peter Bourjos + Starting CF, just wish he had better OB to lead off LF Pat Burrell + probably a DROP CF Marlon Byrd TRADE, with Bourjos in CF I need to find someone to trade him to, hits RH OF Trevor Crowe Possibly No Card 40 Man RF/CF Kosuke Fukudome - but looking to DROP due to age CF Carlos Gomez + to hit LH and occasional platon start there, he's young, I will miss the ability to play him in OF SP Clayton Kershaw ++ Ace of the staff, the only thing that hurts is that he's a lefty SP Dan Haren ++ 12 best card in the deck SP Matt Garza ++ solid #3 for 12 team league SP Scott Baker + if he can stay healthy in real life he makes me staff amazing SP Brandon Morrow + really hope he turns the corner this year and becomes the solid #2 I think he can be SP Randy Wells DROP just not looking good long term SP Brad Bergesen DROP same here SP Brett Cecil - might be worth keeping for the innings SP Luke Hochevar 40 Man still has the chance to break out SP Kris Medlen No Card 40 man another potential #2, but currently shelved till 2012 SP/MR Brian Duensing DROP worked great against lefties out of the pen for me, won't be as strong so I might not get my SP/MR swing man back MR Jason Motte + gem of a pick up last year, I got lucky with all my picks in relief from last year, they all are keepers MR Tyler Clippard ++ dominates both sides of the plate, will be a great guy to throw out there, especially since the innings he has MR Octavio Dotel - usually just throw him out for one guy, if I keep him that will remain CL John Axford + will probably share closing duties with Motte, but the 'stache will be back! |

The RUBL commissioners office has officially announced that the Trojans' 1st round pick from Jamestown for the upcoming draft is the 7th pick of the draft! This is huge news as the Trojans are looking to acquire a solid 2B bat with this pick and projections are showing that this may be possible. More news to come.

Big news out of Southern California today. The Trojans just acquired the 5th overall pick of the 2012 draft. Trading away their 2nd in 2012 and the 3rd they acquired from Death Valley in the trade that sent Nelson Cruz packing early in 2011.
This solidifies the Trojans 2012 draft they have 3 1st round picks, which includes the names of Hosmer, Lawrie, Hellickson, Pineda, Ackley, and Jennnings.

I'm currently working on some offers to trade my #7 overall pick down into the 2nd round and get some future picks as well.

Well this is what my lineup is looking like it will be this season. It's not pretty but it's not terrible either. This is assuming I get my 3 choices for the first round.

I traded picks 3.7 and 3.11 in 2012 for pick 2.3. No more trading for me at this time. My plans are to get Hosmer, Ackley, Moustakas, and Wilson Ramos with my first 4 picks. I will then wait till pick 3.10 to continue drafting.
