18. The smaller of two consecutive integers is four more than half the greater.

Can I get a little help with my boys 7th grade math?

19. A rectangle has an area of 110cm(squared). The lengths in centimeters of two adjacent sides are consecutive integers....

20. I am thinking of four consecutive integers. the sum of the second and fourth equals the thisr increased by 17.

thanks, i don't have a clue.....

19) x * (x + 1) = 110
x^2 + x - 110 = 0
quadratic formula yields x = 10 OR x = -11
throw out the negative answer, so x = 10
L1 = X = 10
L2 = X + 1 = 11

20) x, x + 1, x + 2, x + 3
x + 1 + x + 3 = x + 2 + 17
2x + 4 = x + 19
x = 15

15, 16, 17, 18

You could also just square root the 110 and use the 2 bracketing numbers. (EDIT - but teachers always did hate me and only give me half-credit because I didn't show work or use formulas, so RPI's is probably better for your purposes.)

20. 15, 16, 17, 18

18) x - 1, x

x - 1 - 4 = x/2
x - 5 = x/2
x/2 = 5
x = 10

x - 1 = 9, x = 10

x = smaller integer

x = (X+1)/2 + 4

x-4 = (X+1)/2

2(x-4) = (x+1)

2x - 8 = x + 1

x = 9

Centimeters? Are they buying discount Canadian math textbooks in AC?

Is each question followed by "What's the answer eh?"

double dola (and a thread jack): Any flooding problems in AC today? This rain seems like it's never going to end these past couple days.

BishopMVP's way...

Suppose the rectangle is actually a square what would it's sides be? Sqrt(110)

Since it's a rectangle, and we know it's sides are consecutive integers, just take the integers above and below sqrt(110).

For #20, there's no reason for the problem to mention four consecutive integers -- since the first one isn't used in the problem, only three are needed.

You can use the FOIL method instead of the quadratic equation
x^2 + x - 110 = 0
(x-10)(x+11)=0
X=10, X=-11
X=10 since it cant be a negative number

I would just like to add that as an English major, this thread has made me really hot for RPI-Fan, Radii and BishopMVP.

And -apoc-. Mustn't forget -apoc-.

As a history major I agree.

Especially Radii, I'm a sucker for a guy who lives with his parents
