A Quick Look at the 2016 Quarterback Situation
The 2015 off-season featured almost no significant quarterback free agency. The biggest contracts went to Josh McCown (3 years, $14 million), Matt Hasselbeck (1 year, $3 million), Mark Sanchez (2 years, $9 million), Ryan Mallett (2 years, $7 million), Shaun … Continue reading →

I'm not sure what all the deep metrics say, but I'd be surprised if the Jets let Ryan Fitzpatrick walk, as long as Chan Gailey is there as OC. Maybe I'm becoming an old school "eye test" guy, but I don't see him as the weak link there.

Seems like Chase Daniel would be a decent option at something like 2/10...maybe he earns your starting job

Agreed, the Jets are resigning him. I don't think he's that good, but he had a good year and I think the Jets will reup him. What are their other options? They aren't going to go back to Gino. They have had too good of a year to get a top QB in the draft. I see no way he won't come back. Assuming Chip Kelly stays, I think he'll get either Griffith or Kap. I think the Skins are all in on Cousins. Cousins should want to stay there too, as he has a coach who believes in him. I see that marriage continuing. I think Manning is done in Denver and probably done overall. I think he's retiring, but if he doesn't, I think Denver cuts him. |

I can see both Washington and the Jets thinking they need to stay with their quarterbacks, but Cousins won't come cheap and Fitzpatrick has disappointed so many teams by not being able to take it to the next level. He's probably the best backup in the league - right up there with Derek Anderson.
Chip Kelly, the NFL, and a 10-run-per-game quarterback is a recipe for an early season-ending injury. However, the Eagles need someone back there. |

He had that one year with the Browns where he was a top 10 QB in the league...

Teams look for something different with backups. Guys who can step in and win a few games if the starter goes down. It's a slightly different skill set because you're always playing with a playbook designed for someone else's strengths.
Sometimes it's hard to know if someone who is mediocre as a starter (like Mark Sanchez) would be an ideal backup. Anderson seems to fit the bill. Another example is Matt Moore. |
