Cloverfield
I'm sure some of you have seen the preview of all of these kids partying in NYC, all being shown from the view of the person holding the camera and then some booms happen and everyone panics and runs...
http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=21621 I thought that it was a new Godzilla movie coming out. Anyone know any details about this movie other than this brief synopsis.

I've been following this for a while. Looks interesting. I think it'd be super sweet if there was some Lovecraftian spin to it all.

Supposedly the film is shot in a hand-held-you-are-there manner.

the movie itself looks to be pretty promising, but I have to agree with Rev. If the entire thing is as shaky as the trailers, I don't know that I'm going to be able to watch the damn thing.
Reminds me of Blair Witch, which caused my wife to puke (luckily she made it out of the theater in time).

The shaky camera thing in movies never bothered me. I made it through Blair Witch without a problem. (But I get that same sea-sickness reaction when I try to play a FPS or 3rd-PS on a console...)

This is a 5 minute section (begining) of the film. You will get an idea of the "shaky" filming. Sometimes it really sucks, sometimes it's not bad at all. It's a guy with a camcorder (as the storyline goes), so it's to be expected. I hated the filming at first, but damn does that 5 minute chunk grab me some. The destruction of New York (and the rolling dust/debris cloud) will probably have someone ultra sensative about 9/11 bitching. The head of a large, famous statue being thrown? across New York was cool.

based on that widget, the shakiness doesn't look to be too bad... though how it translates on a big effing screen as opposed to a tiny little window will be interesting.

The commercials were kind of 'meh' to me, but that clip definitely made me want to see it, that looks pretty bad ass.

OK, so, apparently there is a scene after the credits that is not in all versions of the movie. I stayed through the credits and all I got was some backwards whispering.
Good movie though. |

I really really loved this movie, and I normally go for Memento, Eternal Sunshine type movies, not huge monster movies. Something about this movie really appealed to me.

Yeah there is some story about naming it after a street, but somebody misheard it and wrote Cloverfield instead of what it the street actually was. I don't remember enough of the story to coherently put it back together.
In the movie, no, there is no reasoning behind it. Just a government codeword. |

When we started the project there was going to be an announcement in the trades. In this case, they wanted to keep everything under wraps. So the movie was going to be made under this outside corporation that was basically a property of Paramount. That corporation had a name that I don’t know the name of. I think Clover was the first part of it. Maybe it was Cloverdale. When Drew [Goddard, LOST writer] was putting a name to the project, there was supposed to be a name for the project like there was for The Manhattan Project. So he said, "I am going to use that weird mysterious thing," and he misheard it. He didn’t even understand that it wasn’t Cloverfield, it was Cloverdale. Maybe that was because of the street by J.J.’s old office, but the truth is he just misunderstood it.

I sometimes play in a home poker game that Drew Goddard plays in. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, so I'm very happy for him that this is doing well.
I also used to live on Cloverdale Ave. in LA and it's very close to where the host of this poker game lives. |

I just got back from seeing this and I think I liked it, but I need to ponder it for a couple more days. The shaky-cam stuff wasn't that bothersome... I only had to look away briefly twice.
It's a very well done movie... not sure I can get into my reasons why I'm only "thinking" I like it without getting into spoilers.

Really? I took my daughter to see it today and we both considered it a waste of time and money. Based on the comments I heard leaving the theatre, I think that was the universal opinion from the audience. The only way I could recommend it to anyone is if they were seeing it for free and didn't mind throwing away an hour and a half. Very bad movie.
I found it to be very bothersome...and I'm not normally someone who gets nauseous from this type of thing. In fact, I don't think it's ever bothered me before in any other movie or television show. Last edited by VPI97 : 01-19-2008 at 04:12 PM. |

Interesting... people in the theater where I saw it actually applauded after the end. I guess this is one of those movies you either love or hate... or you end up like me and on the fence.

I don't go to a lot of movies, but I can't imagine a film that would make me applaud afterwards. Do people really do that? What? Do they think the director or the actors are sitting up in some booth watching the theater for reactions?

I remember people applauding at the end of Independence Day. I am pretty sure that is the only movie I have seen that happen afterwards.

I've been in a movie theater where people clapped before. I think it's stupid as well, although it's the same as yelling at your TV during a football game. It's not like they'll hear you.
The only difference in this analogy is that you make a fool of yourself in front of other people in the movie theater, while your family and friends are the only ones who hear you at home watching TV. |

Just saw it tonight, and I enjoyed it. It came to entertain and it did. Fortunately, for whatever reason, shaky camera syndrome doesn't affect me like it does others.
As for applause after movies, I too think it's a ridiculous thing to do, but I am surprised some of you don't see it more often. I have been to at least ten movies in the past couple years alone where some appluase came at the credits.

I just got back. Saw it, thought it was great, with quite a few OH SHIT moments. Overall, a very nice take on the Godzilla style of film.
Unfortunately my girlfriend got motion sickness, but she can't even play 3D video games without getting motion sickness, so that wasn't a great shock. A group of 4 elderly people left the movie due to motion sickness too.

stevew alludes to it in his spoiler post above, but I am still not sure I have the whole back story. Anyone here been following the viral marketing campaign that was apparently part of the buildup to the film? Apparently this movie was marketed both traditional and with an online clues-to-the-plot-style approaches. If someone could give a spoiler-tagged rundown of what else is out there about the background behind Cloverfield, I would much appreciate it. Thanks!
