Pet Peeve of the Day - 7/2/08
Today's pet peeve is a short one - people who pronounce words that start with an H, as a Y sound. This is particularly annoying when the word is "human", or "huge". Yooooge. Yooooman.
Maybe it's a regional thing, but I actually hear it around here as well. Regardless of where the person saying it from, it makes me want to slap them. (Not really related, but I hate it when people use the word "paradigm" multiple times in an "intellectual" conversation.)

I'm pretty sure I pronounce those words the way Schmidty hates. It drives my girlfriend batty, too. I actually can't hear a difference when she tries to mock my pronunciation, though.

You'll see this a lot with native Spanish speakers. The H is silent in Spanish. Spell it juge and juman and they will say it right

Mine actually goes the other way on H's - people who pronounce W's with an extra H before them. Pompous hwhite people especially.

I know what Schmidty's talking about. I once heard an almost vaudeville-like exchange between two people at work one day. Somebody asked "Did Hugh call?" and it went downhill from there. I'm not making this up. I would have just left the room, but I was too busy banging my head against a wall after about 30 seconds of that conversation.

I am not sure if this is a peeve or if I developed this new borderline psychotic hatred for my roommate refusing to spray febreze and close his bedroom after he and his lady "you know."

I am just glad we have our own bathrooms. He is a cool dude and she is cool too. Their sexual habits are well interesting but I imagine they think the same about mine (whenever I am lucky to get some ) but I don't leave smells though because I am a neat freak.

Noop, your pet peeve is out of context with today's theme. Please wait until I do a Pet Peeve of the Day on vaginal stinkage to discuss it.
Thanks for your attention in this matter.

I thought I made mention to the fact I have heard roaring(yes like a Lion) on numerous occasions. I will offer that since I am sure I have said that on this board.

First guy: Did Hugh call? Second: No, I didn't call. First: You're not Hugh. Second: Of course, I am me. First: Well, yes, you are, but you're not Hugh. Second: Are you on the drugs again?

Could people that capitalize words in a sentence when discussing something just be bludgeoned with a large object?
For example, You just don't KNOW what you are TALKING about and need to get a CLUE!!!

Someone really needs to capitalize words to get a point across? When in the Course of human events, it becomes NECESSARY for one people to DISSOLVE the political bands which have connected THEM with ANOTHER . . . Plus, this is my pet peeve.

Typically, at least in legal briefs, words are emphasized either using italics, or underline, or bold, or bold italics. You pretty rarely see bold underline or italics underline or I don't know if I've ever seen the triple bold italics underline play. In any event, those are all better and more elegant ways to emphasize words in writing than ALL CAPS.

I'd rather see sentences in all caps.
One of the product reps in our office has a habit of emphasizing random words for no reason.

I don't think I have many pet peeves, but one that I just remembered has to do with license plates. I hate improper sticker placement on them. I don't know why I hate it so much, but it bugs me. Is it that hard to leave the date of expiry on the left, and stick the new month/year of expiry on the right? Who looks at their old plate and says "I think I need to cover up the date of expiry. Proof of having a registered car LAST year is far more important."

Dang I thought Schmidty's daily pet peeves were back. Now I'm disappointed
I use * instead to emphasize. Using capitals sort seems like you're shouting. IRL, people wouldn't *yell* to emphasize certain words. Last edited by Lorena : 07-20-2009 at 08:00 PM. |
