Disturbing story...
This may be insignificant to many but even if the numbers aren't this high, it's still a condemnation of what we've (humanity) done. I'm definitely not an environmentalist but I think this story is upsetting nonetheless...

Yes I have read on this, and nothing will come of it...WHY?, because humans are more important than fish...tell fishermen to cut back?!?
This being the real truth, we are phasing out many creatures, be it for consumption or the land they live on...in the end, we'll simply artificial make these creatures (genetic advancement). I believe there are still many fish out there, just at lower depths...I got a kick out of an article that said that at one time Mahi-Mahi was an insult to serve because it was called the "rat of the sea" my how times have changed.

I think that hordes of colossal squid have become restless and are in fact responsible for the decline in tasty fish swimming about in the ocean.

The main problem I have with environmental issues is that people ignore the important matters such as science, national security and self-preservation. Green Peace and the rest of the fringe liberal groups have allowed the fringe conservative groups to label all people with environmental concerns as tree hugging wackos. So while saving the spotted owl only to destroy jobs and families is ridiculous, when do we start worrying about overfishing and important things like say....oh....having enough food in the ocean?
Even matters like fossil fuels are ignored when it's pretty damn obvious if we would rely less on them the Middle East would never be a big problem because once we don't need the oil, the region is about as critical as Somalia. That should be a huge national security concern. And global warming is happening regardless of what a few scientists paid off by GM say. We still don't know the exact consequences but I imagine our planet won't react well to a few degrees overall temperature change. The sad thing about environmental problems is it takes long-term planning to solve them and we seem to be a country built on instant gratification. We don't solve problems until they're disasters. We could have invaded Afghanistan a long time ago, we knew exactly what they thought about Americans, we knew they had tried to take us out earlier and would again, but politicians and the American public wouldn't stomach a war until the 9/11 tragedy. |

We'll be wiped out by a meteor long before we ruin the planet ourselves. Or that damn squid will finish us off.
