I’m With Stupid #101 – The Reckoning
This group effort of questions yielded lots of fun. We had some questions that were perceived to be impossible – yet they yielded a pretty reasonable spread of answers after all. Who knew? Without further ado… 1. What is your least favorite U.S. city? 9 New York 6 Los Angeles 5 Detroit 2 Cleveland 2 Pittsburgh St. Louis Philadelphia Las Vegas Dallas Washington DC Not a huge shock to me here – I expected more NY than LA, probably by a wider margin. An impressive strong showing for the Motor City – not exactly a city that immediately comes to mind for anything, since hardly anybody would actually visit there to form his own opinion. Well done, Detroit! 2. What class in school would you least want to repeat? 8 calculus 7 math 4 algebra 3 biology 2 chemistry trignonometry history economics English freshman Well, even among the so-called geekfest of a sports sim message board, it turns out Barbie was right after all: “math class is hard!” Geez, if all the math people had gotten their act together and just said “math” (clearly the preference of Stupid himself) this would have been an eliminator. And I’m sure the “economics” response was just a typo. 3. Who should be the first pitcher taken in fantasy baseball drafts this season? 17 Randy Johnson 8 Johan Santana Roger Clemens Jason Schmidt Pedro Martinez Curt Schilling Not quite an eliminator… but pretty close to consensus here. 4. Name a player who was a 2005 NBA All-Star. 12 Lebron James 10 Shaquille O’Neal 3 Allen Iverson 2 Kobe Bryant Tim Duncan Yao Ming Sign of the times, perhaps? King James reigns supreme, even when the question amounts to “name a guy.” Good for him. 5. Besides "Come on Eileen," name a song by Dexy's Midnight Runners. 9 Geno 5 The Celtic Soul Brothers 3 Show Me 2 Dance Stance 2 Jackie Wilson Said 2 Lets Get This Straight Plan B This is What She Likes Because of You There There, My Dear All in All no answer After all the hand-wringing, we ended up with most of the responses landing on two songs. I’m interested to see why those two songs… “Geno” because of its short title? TCSB because of its catchy title? Placement on the same album as “Eileen”– like the first song listed? Beats me, I didn’t even try this one… 6. Besides “idiot,” name a word you would use to insult an “idiot.” 16 moron 6 dumbass 2 stupid 2 retard jackass imbecile asshat Pretty much an eliminator here – I thought there might be more creative responses give the setting, and I fully expected “stupid” to make the list more prominently. Alas… if there’s one thing Stupid knows, it’s an insult for stupid people. With that – we have our results. First, we will thank for participating: Code:
:: polite applause:: Now, our runners-up… Code:
::enthusiastic applause:: And, our grand champion… albionmoonlight 856,800 ::throwing applesauce:: Congratulations to albionmoonlight on the victory – the torch has been passed to you, sir. Last edited by QuikSand : 03-09-2005 at 09:31 AM. |

Finally.
To answer your Dexy question: I googled Dexy and found a couple of band bio pages. Both of them mentioned the "moderate" success of TCSB and that it came out around the time of Come on Eileen. That was good enough for me (and, it seems, good enough for Stupid as well). |

I found that Geno was their only other No.1 in the UK so stuck that down. However, my googleage seemed to indicate that according to various surveys, reports etc. Cleveland was almost uninanimoulsy the worst metropolitan area to live in the US. I guess that stupid disagrees.

Again, with the Dexy question: I picked Geno because it was on a compilation of British #1 hits that I bought years ago. Apparently it was their only other really big hit (in the UK anyway). Not a bad song... |

What was I thinking with "Philadeplhia" over "New York"?
And then "algebra" over simple "math"? Those two ruined a perfect score in the baseball and basketball questions.

I didn't think that NY would beat out LA, predominantly because of 9/11. I guess the Yankees totally overcame that though.

I'll fess up, it was me that sent in the Dexy's Midnight Runners question. If I had a submission, I don't have a clue what I would have put down as an answer for that one...

I actually thought that "none" might fetch a handful of votes there. After all Stupid hates to work for it. |

I almost PM'd Quik and asked him to change from Trig to Calculus, but I never got around to it. Doesn't matter, I still would have been screwed for picking Santana...

My goal of sucking more at this than MIJB (you removed that line from your sig, by the way) is well on its way to fruition....

Plus, with the links in the signature, it was getting too long.

Why the hate for Saint Louis? I wouldn't rank it as the favorite place to live, but least favorite? I thought it was kind of the Switzerland of cities, no opinion either way.

I was initially excited to see my name somewhat near the top, but then I realized I was still much nearer the bottom. Oh well.
Oh, and economics wasn't a typo. I liked the class, but it seems like everyone I have talked to hated the class. Having said that, I'm pretty dumb for not picking an actual math class. |

Maybe a Cubs fan? I chose based on where I'd least want to live. I obviously should have chosen based on a more general, abstract hatred. |

Wow, I picked Detroit and Johan Santana and still came up third.
I picked Geno because I saw that it made #1 in the UK, so I went with what seemed like the 2nd most popular song. |

No one remembers War Games (my solo Las Vegas answer)? Now that's a true example of stupid overthinking the question.
Starting to wonder what the record is for consecutive top-ten finishes without winning. |

Did you get my entry? Wouldn't have won, here, but just curious where I would have stood.

I would have had Calculus and moron correct, but the Dexy's question sort of scared me off, and I forgot to come back and finish it out. Probably just as well, because I wouldn't have done so hot

Strange, it's in my "Sent" folder @ 10:14am on March 4th. I used the "Forward" function for it... wonder if that messed it up, somehow.
