Wyoming Wildfire, 2018
This thread marks the progress of the Wyoming Wildfire, a franchise being operated under the GroupThink concept. This is the year 2018-year two of the fledgling expansion team's existence.
If you'd like to read through the details for year one, including some helpful background on the concept and the rules involved, here is a link: Wyoming Wildfire, 2017 The basic concept of GroupThink (a deliberately temporary name that seems to have stuck) is that we have several forum participants working together to manage an FOF 2001 franchise. Several people have defined roles, and many others are just ad-hoc contributors, which is very welcome. The principal managers of the team are: Owner: QuikSand General Manager: TheRoyalOne Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Veterans): RPI-Fan Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Young): Daimyo Offensive Coordinator: FishFan Defensive Coordinator: Subby Salary Cap and Financial Advisor: ez Director of PR & Marketing: Fritz We've had very helpful participation from a number of others, and welcome any more. The job of the people listed above manage the various input, as it relates to their field, and to implement things into a sound strategy. If you'd like to download the game files, you may do so here: Wildfire Game Files (as of March 2, morning) Admittedly, this has been ammoving target, as each phase currently results in a new person finding his best way to save the file. AT some point, we may get our act together in this regard. For now-- you may be best served to follow the main forum threads for the latest link. Important: By downloading the file. You are agreeing to play by our rules. Chief among them is no simming ahead. If you want to join in and comment, fine-but do not interfere with everyone's enjoyment by violating this concept. That said, we'll be having several different people manage their portions of the season, and we'll use this thread as a home for the reports and updates on our progress. Discussion and debate about team decisions and so forth will continue to be housed in the main forum, generally in threads labeled with the "WW:" or "GroupThink:" indicators. Feel free to chime in, your input is welcome… [This message has been edited by QuikSand (edited 03-02-2001).] |

Welcome fans to another year of Wildfire Football. This is 2018, the "6" in the 3, 6, 9 plan. We managed to win 5 in 2017 despite playing in the toughest conference in the NFL. To start things off, we take a gander out our Scouting and Coaching Staffs that were assigned to us by the league office. Scout Ronald Shephard still has 4 years left at 1.12 million a season, which is a little steep for a 62 year old man, but he does know his stuff and wears a Super Bowl ring to prove it. Either way, we're looking to change. We put in an initial offer of 5 years 700,000 to Mo Gaines. Coach Charles "I don't play that Devil Down to Georgia song" Daniels is currently making 3.36 million but his contract is expired. He is 56 and his only year on coaching experience was with us last year. I don't heed the advice of the POTGP, the official word is that he "doesn't want to coach that no good former QB of his, Julio Riddols". Apparently he doesn't know he's gone. Frankly, I think his price is too steep and we can't afford him. We will wait until the final week to see what we can for our money. Gaines is signed by Baltimore for 5 years 1.08 million. We will have to re-examine our options here as well. Van Koevering still hasn't accepted any offers, but is staring at 3 years 12.97 million from the Broncos. The best scout for this team, that is fitting the offensive & defensive styles of our coordinators as well as the financial constraints we are under, is 55 year old Marco Fox. We sign him for a 5 year deal at $350,000. I'm sure he'll do us proud. Our new coach is going to be Dean Tuman. He is young, 40 years old, and has all the necessary skills to be a great coach in this league. He needs a little help with developing his defensive players, but he can call a great defensive game plan. He is very solid on offense but tends to be a little lax on his players. We get him for 5 years at 1,500,000 dollars a year. In the realm of Franchise Finances, we heed the advide of financial advisor extraordinaire, ez, and modify our ticket prices. Hopefully this will help make a dent in our near 200 million dollar loss from last year. His recommendations were as follows: Quote:
We pass on our ability to use the Franchise Tag this year. We receive 3 trade offers but none pass my receptionists desk. Some of the initial scouting reports from Marco Fox are pretty interesting to say the least. To download the file, click here (At least I hope that worked) RPI-Fan, you're now in charge. Weeks 1-10 of FA:
We'll pursue DE Jeffrey Webster, and will pursue him hard, at least at first to be sure we don't lose out. I start out by offering him a 3 year deal worth $32M. It includes a 10M bonus, then years of 6-7.5-8.5. As stated, I do not want him to go elsewhere in Week 1. After Week 1, the majority of the bids for Webster are in the 29-30/3 range, so I'll even bump our offer to 34 over 3. (FWIW, I did not pursue any of our UFAs.) Another FWIW... RB Andre Otero is currently looking at a 71.35/4 bid from Atlanta. That computes out to ~17-18 mil a year. QB Alvin Froehlich has signed with Denver for 76/4. QB Bernie Bridges is looking at a 50/3 deal from Carolina, although that is the only offer he is seeing. After Week 2, we hear the news... DE Jeffrey Webster is the newest member of the Wyoming Wildfire! He inked the 34/3 contract with a structure of a 12 mil bonus, then years of 6-7.5-8.5. Also, after Week 2, T Jimmy Clemens has received no bids. We'll see if it stays that way. Ugh, Clemens gets a 38/4 bid in Week 4. I've simmed to where the top of the screen says Week 11. I'll post the file on my website, as I don't know how to do it on Freedrive. The file can be found at: http://home.nycap.rr.com/wyomingwildfire/wildfire.zip Some players remaining as possible targets are LB Nate Wells, LB Wesley Sloan and DT K.C. Burke. ------------------ Secant, Tangent, Cosin, Sin, 3.14159!

Nice to have Webster! I realize the O needs some line help, but if you can swing a starting LB, please do...
The DT is no longer a necessity as we will play Webster at NT...

Our final decisions on pursuees will be LB Wesley Sloan, G Peter Walton and QB Marcus Preston.
I decided on Preston as the 3rd choice because we've made many defensive aquisitions in our first 2 seasons, and we need to start building some sort of offense. I offer G Walton 16/3, LB Sloan 17/3 and QB Preston will wait for a little while to see if his 40/3 request goes down. We will not be renegotiating any player contracts this season. Walton and Sloan both sign in Week 12 (meaning after simming Week 11). By Week 13, QB Preston is down to 38/3, I'll hope to get him in the 10-11 per range. By Week 19, he is willing to go down to 33/3, so I offer him that. He signs in Week 20. As QS has suggested, I move on to the draft. Before this, however, I am offered 2 trades. One would send CB Chris May and the #59 Overall Pick from Seattle to us for QB Marcus Preston. I consider it, as May is decent, but his low run defense would keep him from being a capable S. Because of this, I kindly decline. The other offer is the #62 Overall for C Herb Stevenson, which I promptly decline. In the draft, as it should be known, we have the #5 Overall Pick. 1. Portland - Fisk, Trevor, QB, Delaware 2. Richmond - Rodriguez, Jerome, RB, Texas - El Paso 3. Baltimore - McGee, Kelly, T, Chicago 4. St. Louis - Blanchard, Richard, QB, Boston College The updated file can be found at: http://home.nycap.rr.com/wyomingwildfire/wildfire.zip ------------------ Secant, Tangent, Cosin, Sin, 3.14159!

In future regards to trades, all that should be done by the simmer is to check and see if it passes the "fairness test", ie add a 7th rounder and then put it back. If they will still accept, post the offer to the boards and we will discuss. The trading aspect is something that, in my eye, would be my responsibility ultimately and would have final say on with others input. In the time I ran the file, no offers passed the initial test. These might not have either, just stating the way I think it should work just in case.

We spent 132.5 million of our 174.4 million dollar cap, roughly 76%. EA.com Front Office Football 2001 Our Scout has this to say about our roster: Fairly concerned about starting fullback Very concerned about starting offensive left tackle Fairly concerned about starting offensive right tackle Fairly concerned about starting defensive left end Very concerned about starting defensive right end Fairly concerned about starting strong-side inside linebacker Fairly concerned about starting free safety Fairly concerned about starting strong safety Fairly concerned about starting kicker A few major injuries hit the Wildfire during the preseason, despite the fact that "Willingness to Play Injured Players" was set at zero. FB/TE Britt Staubach tore a thumb ligament and will miss the first couple months of the season. C/T Sherman Bensen stretched his knee ligament and LB Kendall Robinson hyperextended his knee. Both are listed as doubtful and will miss the season opener. Cris Moss replaces Staubach as starting TE and the two backup TEs will split the FB duties. T Alonzo Denman steps in for Bensen. |

Week 1 The Wildfire open their second season with a tough 35-28 loss to the New Orleans Saints. RB Andy Ellis debuted with a 27-94, three TD perfromance, but that was not enough as New Orleans QB Burt Riviera threw 3 TDs and RB Gary Cook scored the go ahead TD with 4:19 remaining. The Fonz caught the only Marcus Preston TD - a 3 yd pass. We never got anything going on the ground in this one and we find ourselves in a 0-2 hole heading into Green Bay to face this year's Super Bowl favorite.

Yuk. 139 points allowed in 4 games...that is really bad. I don't know if we are having to overcome great field position or what...
What kind of yardage are we giving up? I'll make adjustments after 8 games...

Week 5 I have never seen anything like this before. We go back on the road and get stomped 35-0 at the hands of the 4-1 Lions. Ellis sprained his ankle on the game's first play and sat out the remainder. His replacement, Pete Slage, managed just 47 yards on 15 carries. Preston was unimpressive after his one-game benching, throwing Wyoming Wildfire Drive Chart Wyoming 0 Detroit 35 Key Stats: Slagle 15-47 Preston 13-28-3-134 McGeorge 5-54 Clark 8 Tackles, 2 Assists, 1.0 Sack Jiminex 10 Tackles, 4 Assists Alumbaugh 1 Int Injury Report: Britt Staubach, FB - Torn Thumb Ligament, full strength in 2-3 Months Wesley Sloan, LB - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks Cris Moss, FB - Dislocated Elbow, full strength in 3-5 Weeks Roderick Erdahl, LB - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 0-2 Weeks Kendall Robinson, LB - Hyperextended Knee, full strength in 3-5 Weeks Jay Stokes, CB - Broken Nose, full strength in 0-2 Weeks Randal Pedersen, G - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks Tommy Crawford, LB - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks Amos Meeks, LB - Turf Toe, full strength in 3-5 Weeks Andy Ellis, RB - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks Note the 5 LBs injured. The kicker nails three second-half FGs to give Wyoming the 23-6 win. Ellis racks up his first 100-yrad game with a 24-13 performance. Hopefully, our fans did not forget about us. We treat the 46,200 faithful fans that show up to a 23-13 win over the Jets. The kicker got us out to an early 9-0 lead and Andy Ellis helped extend that lead to 16-3 at halftime with a 2 yard run. The Jets managed to score 10 straight points to come within three points of the lead with 2:01 to play. But, Andy Ellis finally broke one open, dashing 58 yards for the back breaker with 1:16 remaining. The rookie finished with 209 yards and a couple of TDs on 27 carries. Ellis Alumbaugh claimed game MVP honors with three intereception, breaking out of a mini-slump. One concern in this one - our kicker missed three FGs. We might want to address our kicking situation which is a very imprtant position in my offense.
