Hiker Amputates Own Arm

http://msnbc.com/news/908232.asp

Pinned by a boulder for five days and having run out of water, a climber amputated his own arm with a pocket knife, rappelled down a cliff and walked until rescuers found him.

WOW!

Did they go back and get the arm? Was it re-attached? I'll bet he doesn't have to sit on his hand now to play "the stranger."

There was a guy who had a tree fall/roll on his leg a number of years ago and had to do the same thing...I'm not going hiking/climbing by myself anytime soon.

Who am I kidding, I'm not going hiking/climbing with anyone else either....

the worst had to be not the actual cutting of the arm, but the psychological torment you go threw when you come to that point where you realize that if you don't perform such a horrific, painful act on yourself you will die. maybe for the first few days it's deep in the back of your head, maye you even joke to yourself about like "well, if i just cut this arm off i'd be able to leave", then you slowly but surely reach that point hwere you have no other alternatives. yeesh. that whole moment right before you cut your arm off has to be the worst. there is no other way around it.

what would have sucked is if a mountain lion came waltzing by when this all happened.

Nah... the mountain lion could have probably bitten through his arm much faster than the pocket knife... I'd rather have a quick, clean bite than having to hack away at my flesh and bone with a swiss army knife.
