The SNOWpocalypse

Snowpocalypse, Snowmageddon, whatever.

How are my DC Metro peeps doing? It's seemed to be pretty tame snow for the most part, but it's really picked up in the last hour or so. Probably 6-8 inches on the ground now.

I'm worried about my mom. She is expecting about 24 inches in Southern New Jersey.

... RECORD SNOWFALL FORECAST IN THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON DC REGION...

... EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT...

GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS 25 TO 35 MPH WITH VISIBILITIES FREQUENTLY FALLING BELOW ONE-QUARTER MILE DUE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL OCCUR OVERNIGHT... PRODUCING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS EAST OF INTERSTATE 95 BETWEEN BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON. ELSEWHERE AROUND THE REGION... NEAR-BLIZZARD WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR OVERNIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. TRAVEL IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED OVERNIGHT THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AND WILL BE VERY DANGEROUS.

BALTIMORE'S RECORD OF 26.8 INCHES FROM THE PRESIDENTS DAY FEBRUARY 2003 STORM WILL ALSO BE THREATENED.

A couple of quick snapshots from the porch taken about five minutes ago. Only had a t-shirt on, so I didn't take a lot of time to work on composition. The snow plow was by about a half hour ago. Driveway across the way was shoveled about two hours ago.

Ack. Just lost power for a split second. With another foot of snow on the way I guess it's inevitable.

Took these from my phone as I attempted to shovel the driveway.

First opening the garage, second after getting a path 1/2 way down the driveway.

The area Sak is in has been declared a disaster, so right now I've got the upperhand

More importantly-- Pens play in Montreal this afternoon, then scheduled to be in Washinton tomorrow afternoon.

WBS Baby Pens- Hershey Bears have already postponed their game tonight in Hershey.

I am sure Uncle Gary will do the right thing and spare the Penguins.

Originally projected to get 18-24 inches in NYC a few days ago, I think it's more like 18-24 flakes on the roof of the building next to me.

Here too. Actually, some branches did fall at my neighbor's house. Shoveling the driveway is tough with the branches hanging so low, trying to duck under or avoid them.

I shoveled about 3 hours ago:

Another one, taken from the other side of the car and from a squat position (note the plow drift near the Xterra on the right side of the image):

My back deck, which needs to be shoveled, taken from a standing position:

My back deck again, taken while seated on the floor:

Probably around 16-18 inches here so far. Hard to tell for certain in the area as we have so much wind that we have areas with a couple inches and other areas with 3+ feet. Just shoveling the walkway from the door to the driveway showed that as one half of the walkway had easily over 2 feet of snow but it tapered down to about 5 inches on the other side.

It's much heavier snow than we got in December thanks to the temperature being much higher. Imagine how much higher the snow would be if it was 10 degrees colder like it was in December. As it is we're probably going to beat that storm.

Just heard from my twin brother in NE West Virginia. They got nailed, sent a picture of his wife standing in a 39 inch snow drift this morning.

Hope all of you in the storm's path are warm and safe right now.

I've got 4.5" in front of my apartment so nothing crazy. We had 11.5" last weekend.

Here are the "official" snow totals:

National Weather Service Text Product Display

36" in the aptly name Frostburg, MD tops the list but some of those totals are old.

So I went out last night to do my normal delivery. They were calling for something like 6 inches.

After several attempts to make a couple turns, and/or climb a few hills, I ended up spending all night in a Wal Mart. Waiting for the weather to break enough to get home.

I figured once he realized his mistake of having the Pens play back to back games he would cancel it.

Took me about 6 hrs to shovel my driveway. Not including the 2 hrs last night i spent out there getting the first bit off.

The amount of snow I shoveled today can be measured in the tons.

Made a kickass snow fort for the kids with underground passageway action. So it wasn't a total loss.

Are you guys having to clean off your roofs to avoid a collapse? I remember a huge storm as a kid where we could walk on the roof without a ladder if we piled the snow up right.
