For Subway Fans Who Don't Want to Eat Fresh

It's the footlong cheeseburger from Hardee's!

Supersize it! That’s the meaty mantra for fast-food chains this summer as they keep introducing larger, fattier and more outrageous sandwiches. Just as the buzz fades over one calorific concoction, another one rolls into place.

The newest pig-out opportunity comes in the form of foot-longs like the cheeseburger that’s being tested at 50 Carl’s restaurants in Southern California and 50 Hardee’s in Indiana, according to USA Today.

Like some of the other offerings that are big in size but low in price, this burger extravaganza costs $4 without lettuce and tomatoes, and $4.50 with. Meanwhile, Subway will preview a line of foot-longs next month, and Quiznos is considering introducing premium foot-longs in the fall. They’ll cost around $5, and one will be made with prime rib.

Size matters, say food experts.

“We live in a society that’s fascinated with all things big,” Scott Hume, editor of BurgerBusiness.com, an industry trade site, told USA Today. “It’s inherently American to push for something bigger and better than anyone else has.”

The Hardee’s foot-long is a jaw-busting, artery-clogging sandwich that has 850 calories and 20 grams of saturated fat. If it sells well, it could be available in various other Hardee’s within six months.

Supersize it! Hardee's, Carl Jr.'s try out footlong cheeseburgers

I was reading about an Outback Steakhouse appetizer the other day that had 3,000 calories (Cheese Fries I think).

The KFC's and Carl's Jrs get the bad press for pushing the envelope but I think that's just because they're so unapologetic about it. There's some really shocking stuff out there at Outback Steakhouse/Applebee's/Friday's type places.

My second job (the supplementary cash income job ) is at Friday's, and yeah, there are tons of stuff there that's a lot of calories, although I have found Outback and Claimjumper and Cheesecake Factory to take the cake when it comes to being sit down, family style restaurant chains with huge calorie plates.

As for Friday's, I don't know if it's every Friday's or just the ones in California, but the calories are now included with every menu item (and right on the menu next to the item, not hidden in the back, on the wall of the restaurant or in a separate booklet). I get comments all the time about it (mostly "woe is me" from customers ).

I see I am in the test area for the Carl's doing this footlong cheeseburger. Let me know if you guys want me to go have one to taste test it for y'all.

Not sure a more traditional bun texture wouldn't have been a better choice, that looks like more of a hard roll of some sort. Otherwise it just looks like a triple in a different shape & those just aren't usually much of a challenge to me.

Reminds me of this one time when I was in the Stone Mountain GA area, and we went to this place that supposedly had these awesome huge burgers. When I actually got it, it was just several smaller burgers on a sub bun. So dissapointing

850 calories is not that bad considering the size.

Had one in my old college town that was the choice for drunk dining. I would have eaten so many of those goddamn things if they had them back in the day.

Frito's Chicken Enchilada Melt?

I guess Subway now realizes the only money to be made is in fattening us up. I'm a big dude but on my most gross eating day I can never imagine making what is literally a shit sandwich.

It's like the visual definition of giving up.

I bet it's delicious.

Missed this back in the day but hell yes. Got to thinking about it just the other day due to the bizarre fact that Los Angeles seems to have no good hole in the wall pizza joints, and that naturally progressed to remembering those cheeseburger subs.

Sadly, the Hardee's in my town closed years ago, so the closest one is 20 miles away. I like going to it sometimes just for the mushroom and swiss. This looks like overkill to me.
