The Yearly State of the FOOL address! (FOOL/FOOL-X/FOOL-H)

Hey everyone, it is another year, and we have three leagues running strongly. I would like to thank everyone for not only being a part of this great community and part of these leagues but also helping to contribute to make them a fun and exciting place to play.

I know that DarkCloud has been as busy as I have been lately which at times have caused bumps in the road for all three leagues but everyone weathers them fine and things keep on full steam ahead.

What can you do to help?

All three leagues are mostly full, but there are a few openings in each of them. Word of mouth to friends in other leagues, or occasional posts on the main OOTP boards helps get the word out. Point people to the main FOOL website for more information on the leagues, or point them to the forums to get a feeling for what the community is like. Unfortunately all online leagues suffer attrition over time, so having new faces helps provide new blood to the league.

Looking for a little admin help

I'm interested in a little help from either one person that is in all three FOOL leagues, or one individual from each of the three leagues that is interested in helping keep the team owner lists updated. They get a little behind the time every now and then. I would like someone that is interested in helping with that.

League and team Articles

One thing that we used to have more of in the past was team articles or league articles. I personally don't have the time right now to do them regularly because of work, but I think it would be great to see some of them again. Even if it was just the simple team review prior to the start of a new season. Those things are what makes these leagues fun for me at least to read

OOTP11

Who has it already? Who is planning on getting it? Who would get it if one of the FOOL leagues upgraded to it? Please post to comment below so I can get a feel for how we need to move forward here.

Here is to another great FOOl year!

I will definitely write some team articles for at least Fool and FoolX, I love FoolH but I don't have an attraction yet to my players since Paige left me a few years ago!

I have 11!

I have 11, too. I've kicked around trying to do something fast-sim in a league format, but I think I have online league fatigue coupled with a 200+ solo league that I started in OOTP9, imported in 10 and now have become engrossed in v.11, so...it's like going back to my solo roots.

11 would probably be the best way to get -H, especially since it's the newest...but only if everyone ends up with it.

I have no plans to get 11, so i would hope we don't upgrade. I'm on a once every 2 versions plan.

I don't have 11, and don't plan on getting it soon, just like with 10 last year. So I would also not be for moving FOOLX up.

Frankly, I think it's a smart general business to give Markus 1-2 to 5-6 patches on his German engineering before committing a league and its history to a new version.

Ready to convert.

Updating the teams/owners can't be that time consuming. I'm no longer in H but I can help out with all 3.

Would it be easier on the eyes if we started 3 league specific news threads and had all stories posted in those? (FOOLX Files, etc) Sort of like a little league blog we can all contribute to. Just an idea.

I just picked up 11 and am eagerly awaiting a chance to use it online.

I'll be honest here as well. I really enjoy this league. The concept and pace really makes it appealing. I find myself looking forward to draft day (Wednesday) each week. Additionally, Thursdays are always exciting as I know that when I wake up in the morning, I'll have something to check out. I always enjoy reading through the season thread in anticipation of my demise each year. I love it... Maybe one of these days I'll get to look forward to a Friday sim!

I guess where I am trying to go with this rambling is that when I first joined this league I was in a handful of other leagues along with co-commishing my own league alongside my brother. To say I had a full plate would be an understatement.

Since joining FOOL-X I have trimmed down to just 2 leagues. This, and my own. That is saying a lot about the quality of this league.

I think that now being in only 2 leagues, I will be able to focus more and have some free time to start writing about my Chicago Cardinals over here.

Not to toot my own horn, but I put a ton of effort into my own league's website and article writing. If you get bored, poke around the league. I've done all the image work and articles on the front page.
Full Count Baseball

I am hoping to bring some of that over here in the form of team articles.

I don't have 11 and don't plan on getting is anytime soon because, well, teachers don't buy anything they don't have to. I will, of course, upgrade if it means keeping either one of my teams.

Alan - welcome back. It's good to have FOOL-X back - it was missed.

I do have v11 and suggest ones who don't to get it. It is a nice upgrade to v10. I got it for $24.99 so it was for sure worth the purchase.

We will agree to disagree. I am sure it's a nice game, and a decent upgrade, but for 40 bucks, that's an expensive upgrade. It's not a every version purchase for me.

Seems pretty split down the middle....

Sooooo when is FOOL11 starting up?

Put me on the waiting list for that since it seems almost inevitable.

If I hadn't been on beta, there's no way I'd have already upgraded this soon, because it's funny how text sims can be almost as pricey as console games these days. Gone are the $15-20 impulse text sim buys it seems.

But that being said, this is easily the best version of the game. I wasn't even all that high on v.10 compared to v.9, but I will say that this is the most complete version he's put out since I started with the franchise seven years ago.

Although I currently only have a few weeks of FOOL experience under my belt, the league format is FANTASTIC. I already find myself re glued to the daily updated files. I would embrace any changes made to enhance the FOOL leagues. I am happy with either decision.
Thanks

That's why I said I got it for the pre-ordered price of $24.99. I can see where you may not think it's worth a $40 upgrade but for the pre-ordered price it is a bargain IMO. Personally - I get more play time from OOTP then any of my console games combined...

Thanks everyone for the comments and checking in. I sent out a few PMs to some of the people who didn't check in here just to figure out where they are with things.

I think that in hindsight, I regret upgrading FOOL last year to OOTPX one month before OOTP11 came out. With multiple leagues and people here who are on plans of buying the game every other year it seems to make sense to offer multiple platforms for people to choose from. It probably would have made sense to have just jumped FOOL from OOTP9 to OOTP11 and kept FOOL-X on OOTPX for another year. Hindsight is 20/20 however, so we can't get a do-over there

A few things I believe...

- I am not sure that our fast sim community can support a fourth league. I know of some other fast sim leagues that started up the past two years and didn't survive. So I think simply adding yet another FOOL ootp11 league to the already established three would end up just being a death sentence for one of the leagues eventually anyways.

- I think we as a community need to continue to upgrade to keep attracting new members from the OOTP boards and elsewhere. Otherwise we will just end up diminishing to nothing in the term of owners eventually.

- There is a strong number of people in our community who have OOTP11, enjoy it and strongly want to have a fast sim ootp 11 league, so it seems logical that we do need one.

Dark Cloud mentioned he wouldn't mind upgrading FOOL-H, but only if everyone in the league got OOTP11, which does not appear to be the case, so I am assuming that is staying on OOTPX. (Please correct me if I am wrong there DC).

For FOOL, only 55% of the people that checked in have OOTP 11, which is barely over a majority, and a few stated they had zero plans to get it.

In FOOL-X, 80% of the people who checked in stated that have OOTP 11, and of the people who did not, one stated they would likely get it if we upgraded. So even though I am still waiting on some PM replies, right now it seems logical that FOOL-X would be the league that I am probably going to target for an upgrade.

As with anything in FOOL, I would put it to a league vote for the FOOL-X league before deciding anything for sure. I did want to at least give my thoughts where I stand right now since it had been nearly 10 days since we started this thread. I didn't want a cloud of uncertainty to hang over everyone's heads.

I also think if we did upgrade FOOL-X to OOTP 11, I would want to make a declaration that FOOL would not upgrade from OOTPX at all until next year when OOTP 12 comes out, to provide a stable home for those in our community that are dead set on purchasing OOTP 11 this year.

If anyone has any questions, or would like to discuss this further, please drop me a PM. Everyone should know by now that I am very open to people's suggestions or input. So I fully welcome anyone that has concerns or thoughts on this subject.

Sounds great, Alan. Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

I like the idea of a leap frog setup. FoolX upgrades to 11, FOOL to 12 etc etc

I know that FOOL-H is a part of the FOOL community as well but due to it's historical nature, it's kind of a beast of it's own. (this is not intended as an insult in any form, simply an observation) Historical leagues tend to attract a specific type of OOTP'er. True, some guys cross over and play varieties, but it seems that Historical players stick to their niche and vise versa.

Me personally, I am a fictional player only. I've tried to get into real rosters and historical leagues. It's just not my thing. I enjoy fake baseball.

Anyways, I guess where I'm going with this is that I like the idea of keeping FOOL and FOOL-X coordinated as far as upgrades go. They are both fictional leagues and lure in the same type of players / gms. The same can not be said for FOOL-H due to the historical nature.

Additionally, I am the type of guy who will upgrade with every version so I'd hate to get stuck on the 'old' boat. I guess I need to get my name on the FOOL waiting list as well, then.

I think a move to 11 would probably, possibly (now that's decisive) boost numbers in FOOL-H, but I don't want to leave anyone behind in the hopes of getting new people. Just seems counterproductive. So I dunno.

I'm kind of enjoying playing 11 without having a league attached to it for me, so I've kicked around trying to do something with it...but anyway, I like the idea of X moving to 11, because well...it means I don't have to deal with it and at least one FOOL league will be on the new version.

I currently am not planning on getting FOOL 11 at the current time. This will be the first one I won't get since OOTP5. I'm currently planning and saving for a wedding, so that has taken up time for these leagues as well as funds to buy probably the only game I actually play anymore.
But I don't won't any league decision to be altered because of my decision not to get it at this time. I still may at some point. I am in all 3 leagues and have thought about dropping one as it's become much and it seems as though FOOL H actually gets the brunt of my inactivity.

I got to thinking... I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here.

This is just me brainstorming out loud.

It it only logical to assume that with every ootp version upgrade a league goes through, it has to be expected that at least one owner, possibly more, will have to abandon their franchise.

While the leap frog setup sounds great, and I am on board with that idea, I just thought that maybe having one league always lagging (one version) behind, would probably solve the problem as well and actually lend a more stable ground for those GMs who don't typically upgrade with every version.

This way, the one league that always stayed on the earlier version could attract and maintain those GMs.

On the other hand, it would be known that the 'other' league plans to upgrade with every new version and GMs could plan accordingly. Basically, you wouldn't try to run a franchise in the league that upgraded with every new OOTP version if you are the type of guy that doesn't always upgrade.

There would be a version of FOOL always running on the earlier, in this case OOTPX, and a version of FOOL always running on the latest release of OOTP, in this case OOTP11.

So rather than leap frog the two leagues and possibly cause more GMs to vacate their franchise, they'd either be in FOOLX and plan to upgrade with every version or they'd be in FOOL knowing upfront that the league will always be running on an earlier version of the game.

I hope this comes off well and is not taken as an insult to anyone here. I love these leagues and enjoy the competition that each and every GM brings.

When does the league running the earlier version upgrade? Every 2 years?

What do you do with the folks who are buying different years, but skipping years?

We have a large number of people who are interested in playing in both leagues, so I don't think it is a huge issue. If we run into a case where we have more people interested than teams regularly, then that is a good problem that we can face at that time.

I pretty much like the idea of each league leapfrogging every other year as it does allow people who don't plan on upgrading until every other year that option. For people who want to upgrade every year, they have a league they can be a part of, (or they can remain in both this year's and last year's leagues if they wish too!)

Yep!

Just for the record, I do like the leap frog idea. The wheels in my head starting to turn this morning and I decided to put the thought out there.

FWIW there is a rumor that some guy named Joe who never wears shoes might be taking on an AI controlled team in FOOL. So, yeah, the option to be in both FOOL leagues and have the best of both worlds (ootp versions) is definitely there!
