John Boileau is a master football manager... at least in the game. In Football Manager 2005 he has managed such clubs as Nuneaton Borough, Chievo Verona, Kalmar FF, Doncaster and Chelsea. His management has lead to league, cup and Euro experience, including scouting, honing tactics and personnel management... in the game. So why not apply to become the manager of a real team? Well, because his real world experience amounts to leading the St. Paul's Under 11's to a the Summer Playscheme Cup in 1999.

But that didn't stop Boileau, high on his tremendous success in the game, the 25-year-old decided to apply for the position of Middlesbrough Football Club manager in a cheeky letter he sent to the chairman of the club and which lists his gaming experience as the reason he is a must hire.

The only thing funnier than the application is the rejection letter, which reads, in part:

You were of course the outstanding candidate but after careful consideration we decided against your appointment. Quite frankly we were of the opinion that your tenure with us would have been short lived, as your undoubted talent would result in one of the big European Clubs seeking your services.

We consider it a sign of our progress that someone of your status would consider us.

when you think about it it's not really that far out of the question to think that the skills us text-sim gamers have developed could in some way be ported over to real life. what skills do we need to have to be successful in any text-sim game like FOF or FM:

2. ability to formulate a gameplan/strategy (and in turn get the players that we feel would best be successful in that gameplan)
3. ability to adapt that gameplan during the season (due to unforeseen injuries/trades/# of wins and losses)

these 4 (or more that i might have missed) traits are what you need in every text sim game. it shouldn't be out of the ordinary that someone without actual game experience couldn't succeed - look at baseball with it's shift towards stat sabermetric analyzing rather than old school "going with the gut" approach. GMs utilize scouts, it's not like you'd have to go out and rate players yourself.

the only areas i'd say it'd be hard would be for the draft (in any sport) and for dealing w/ the media. i probably wouldn't make a good GM cuz i have a short temper. still, i don't think assembling a real life team is the alchemy that people in the sports business make it out to be. that Millen guy for the Detroit Lions can't be any better than someone from FOFC. how much better could he be than like a SD (known for his high calibre of thorough over analyzing), Quiksand (for obvious reasons), or even Jim Gindin himself, whose amassed probably a textbook worth of knowledge on football.

Tbh this is the norm here - there are a number of 'football manager' applications for every job. What is much rarer is someone taking the time to send a personalised reply like Gibson.
