(FBCB) Cutting down the Nets or The Jim Boeheim Challenge

I've built Georgia Tech into a solid top five to top ten program in the 30+ years I've been at the school. I am one of the top ten all time winningest coaches in the game., however I am still reaching for that first national championship. This dynasty will chronicle the final years in my career at Tech and my effort to cut down the nets. The dynasty is named in honor of Jim Boeheim, who after much success finally led his Syracuse squad to the national title in 2003.

We rolled through the ACC season last year, but were upset in the tournament final (by North Carolina) and then in the first round of the NCAA tournament by Hofstra. We were a #2 seed in the dance. Our bracket was the wacky bracket of the four, with Morehead State (the 14 seed) beatin Kent State (the 12 seed) to go to the Final Four.

This Year's Team

We have another solid squad this year, but we might be a little bit young to make a run at the title (though we did have the top rated recruiting class last season).

A little more detail on the players:

Point Guards

Lenny Henry--A true senior and a two year starter at point guard. Last year he averaged 7 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game. He's a slightly better than average ball handler and passer, but he makes up for it on defense. Likely a starter again this year.

Lawrence Ullman--Average passer and ball handler, but a better than average defender, who was second on the team in steals in only 15 minutes of action per game last year. Redshirt sophomore was the 48th ranked recruit.

Adrian Davis--Excellent ball handler and good shooter. Played only 8.5 minutes a game last year. Will battle Ullman for the top back-up role. Redshirt sophomore was the number 36 recruit and an all american in high school.

Troy Thurmond--Redshirt Freshman walk-on who will guard the end of the bench this year.

Shooting Guards

John Simmons--Redshirt Junior. Returning starter. Averaged just over 10 a game last season. Will take on more of a scoring role this year. Deadly shooter with three point range. Shot .358 from behind the arc last year, after shooting only .290 his freshman season.

Tony Schuh--Freshman. The number six recruit in the nation last year. A high school all american. Will likely press Simmons for minutes or play along side him in a three guard offense. Appears to be a good shooter who creates shots better than Simmons. Will not redshirt because there are already rumors that he will be one and done on the Flats.

Small Forward

Wendell Ingram--Redshirt Senior. Only returning player at small forward. Walk-on who didn't see the court last season, and will struggle to see it this season. Only averaged 1.7 minutes a game his freshman and sophomore seasons, largely in mop up duty.

Vernon Raynor--Redshirt Freshman. Slotted as the starter before training camp. Number 25 recruit coming out of high school. Appears to be a slasher type with strong defensive capabilities.

Ervin Harrell--Freshman. Our top recruiting target last season, though he doesn't appear to be as good as advertised. Likely a red shirt to develop defensive skills to go along with his inside-outside ability with the ball in his hands.

Power Forwards

John Beattie--Redshirt Sophomore. Played in 31 games last season before injuring himself near the end of the year. Penciled in as the starter, pre-training camp. Excellent inside scorer, who plays solid defense as well. Played only 9 minutes a game, averaging just over 4 ppg last season. A bit undersized at 6'6".

James Cohen--Redshirt Freshman. Good offensive player, but weaker on defense than Beattie. Will be the first PF off the bench. Was the 27th ranked recruit in the country.

William Vickers--Freshman. The number 29 recruit in the nation. Still likely to redshirt this season to develop on both ends of the floor. Looks to be a good rebounder with offensive abilities.

Alex Doty--Freshman. Another likely redshirt. He was the 24th ranked recruit, but looks a little less polished than Vickers.

Centers

Delmer Jones--Redshirt Junior. Solid rebounder and decent scorer. Will start this season. Averaged almost 7 points and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes a game last season. Made the freshman all conference team.

Christopher Smith--Freshman. The 13th ranked recruit. Will likely get playing time this season. Good rebounder and defender, with only average offensive abilities.

Coaching Staff

Only our recruiting coordinator, Kyle Adams returns. Our other two assistants have found head coaching jobs.

Adams makes $190,000 for his 98 recruiting rating.

This will be his second year at Georgia Tech, after a five year stint as the head coach of UMass.

While our AD is currently delighted with our performance, he does expect us to get to the Final Four.

Our facilities are ranked at 98, which is tops in the conference, and we have already been informed that they will be upgraded again at the end of this season.

With the background in place, I think we are ready to go, and we'll pick up in May of 2037 in the assistant coach round.

Assistant Coach Round

There is not much out there in terms of potential coaching assistants. I scour the ranks for a relatively well balanced assistant, and the best I can come up with is Robert Reese, a 42 year old, yet well traveled assistant, who is currently employed by Boston College. He is rated 81 in offense and 49 in defense and makes $100,833 for the Eagles. I can afford to give him a hefty raise, and offer him $165,000.

I tend to skimp on scouting directors, picking the best available talent for $50,000 or less. I decide to splurge a little this year when I happen upon Brandon Binkley, who is asking for $70,000. He is rated 59 in scouting and is 58 years old. Like most assistants, he's pretty well traveled as well, but he does have some head coaching experience. The best thing Binkley has going for him is that he's from Coeur d'Alene, ID, where I've done some work in the past. I'm feeling generous and I offer him $72,500.

Binkley and Reese both accept, as they race gleefully to the bank on their way to Atlanta.

Schedule Tournaments

We've played in pre-season tournaments for a number of years running, now. Our favorite is the pre-season FBIT, because we can get four games under our belts. The least favorite is the Coach's Classic, because it is only two games and you start the season with two relatively tough games.

This season, we open our mail to find an invitation to...the Top of the World Invitational as the number 2 seed. We take it, figuring to get at least two wins while in Alaska.

Scheduling

We now have nine slots available, eight of which can be at home. We've followed the SkyDog method in the past of scheduling two pathetic teams to start, then two sort of decent teams, then two decent teams and finishing the non-conference schedule with some marquee games.

We've also front-loaded the schedule in the past. This year the Top of the World Invitational falls just five days into the season. We know we face Yale (who has put together a pretty solid, border line top 25 program) the first round there, and we'll try to get in games against two patsies before heading to the Great Northwest.

We also have to finish up the second half of our home and home with traditional rival Georgia.

On our first trip through, everyone accepts our offer, except Indiana State, whose dance card is booked for the week we want to play them. We decide to offer last year's final four participant Morehead State, instead. Welcome to the big leagues, kids.

When all is said and done, we end up with the following schedule:

Code:
Georgia Tech 2037 Season Schedule Date Opponent Result Record -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/15/37 Howard (0-0) 11/17/37 at Portland State (0-0) 11/19/37 vs. Yale (0-0) 11/24/37 Air Force (0-0) 11/26/37 Wisconsin-Milwaukee (0-0) 11/28/37 Morehead State (0-0) 11/30/37 Missouri (0-0) 12/03/37 Illinois (0-0) 12/06/37 Connecticut (0-0) 12/31/37 Alcorn State (0-0) 01/06/38 Duke (0-0) 01/16/38 at Virginia (0-0) 01/18/38 Georgia (0-0) 01/20/38 Maryland (0-0) 01/25/38 at Clemson (0-0) 02/03/38 at Duke (0-0) 02/06/38 Virginia (0-0) 02/10/38 at Florida State (0-0) 02/13/38 at Wake Forest (0-0) 02/15/38 at Maryland (0-0) 02/17/38 Clemson (0-0) 02/22/38 North Carolina State (0-0) 02/24/38 at North Carolina (0-0) 02/27/38 Wake Forest (0-0) 03/03/38 at North Carolina State (0-0) 03/06/38 Florida State (0-0) 03/10/38 North Carolina (0-0)

Kyle Adams, our recruiting coordinator, writes to tell us we have one scholarship available for the coming season. Our only scholarship player graduating is starting point guard Lenny Henry. We're also expecting freshman 2 guard Tony Schuh to be one and done. Our recruiting will focus on the back court.

Our recruiting budget is about $35,000 a month this year, so we have plenty of money to find our 1-2 incoming freshmen. We find a number of four star players with high interest in Georgia Tech and evaluate our full crop of 20 recruits.

We begin the narrowing down of recruits, again, figuring to offer a point guard and, if Schuh leaves early, a shooting guard. We've also evaluated a player or two at the other positions, just in case we get surprised by anyone.

Our two favorite point guard prospects are Richard Estrada, from Gentry, Arkansas, and German Richard Kornecker. Both Kyle and I visit Estrada. I send Kyle alone to visit Kornecker.

Estrada's card:

He looks to be a pretty good ball handler and we love his quickness.

Kornecker's card:

Again, we like his ball handling ability and his quickness.

We also visit a shoot first point guard from California, Richard Janes, and Mr. Basketball in Texas Jerome King. Jerome has an excellent all around offensive game, but virtually no defensive skills to speak of.

We decide to visit a couple of shooting guards as well: Robert McGlothlin, a slasher-type who looks to have pretty good defensive skills, and Martin Rayfield, who can shoot and score, but does not look to be as well rounded as McGlothlin.

As a security measure, we also visit 6'9" center Tad Jones, an offensive minded center from nearby Tennessee.

We move into September and check the status of our recruiting contacts.

Richard Estrada has us as his leader, ahead of Seton Hall and Missouri. We offer him an on campus visit.

Richard Kornecker also has us as his leader, ahead of Illinois and Connecticut. I'll visit him this time, but no campus visit, because we aren't willing to part with a third of our budget on one visit.

We lead with Jerome King, also, and decide to invite him to Atlanta for a weekend as well.

We also visit Martin Rayfield again (who has us second behind Illinois) and Robert McGlothlin (who has us second behind UConn).

For good measure, we'll keep stringing Tad Jones along too.

Decision time between Estrada and Kornecker. Estrada is rated higher and appears to be a better ball handler. They are a wash pretty much everywhere else. The risk with Estrada, because he is the sixth rated player in the nation, is that he will only stay for one year. We have some depth at point guard too, so there is a chance he wouldn't even start the year he is on the Flats. We like Kornecker's academics a better as well, and think he can develop into a really fine player. We make an offer to him (but still visit Estrada).

We also visit our two shooting guard recruits, Rayfield and McGlothlin, and our man Tad Jones. We expect to hear from Schuh and anyone else leaving early next month. Here's to hoping our prospects don't commit early.

Good news in that Kornecker commits on the first go-round.

Training Camps

We redshirt Doty, Vickers and Harrell as planned. Our general plan for training camps is to work on the defensive end of the floor. Our big men work on post defense, while our guards work on perimeter defense. On the team strategy front, we choose to work on a 2-3 zone and our man to man defense.

We make it through training camps, and the great news is that Schuh will stay around at least one more year. Alex Doty and William Vickers are probably the two most improved players. Unfortunately, they will both be redshirting this year. We make strides on defense and Lenny Henry really improves his passing skills.

Media Poll

The athletic director writes to tell us we are #5 in the first pre-season poll. Creighton is number one, followed by Kentucky, Illinois and UConn.

November 2037--The Season Begins

Our starting line-up will be, as expected:
C--Jones
PF--Beattie
SF--Raynor
SG--Simmons
PG--Henry

We expect to go ten deep though, with those on the bench getting significant minutes.

Game 1 vs. Howard
We cruise to a 99-61 victory, after jumping out to a 55-28 half time lead. Delmer Jones leads the way with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Lenny Henry adds 16 points and 5 assists, and John Beattie scores 13 points and pulls down 7 boards. Off the bench, James Cohen scores 17, Tony Schuh scores 11, and Adrian Davis scores 6 with 7 assists. The only thing of concern is that John Simmons only plays seven minutes before fouling out with no points, no rebounds and one assist. As a team we shoot 51%, out-rebound Howard 45-33 and only have 11 turnovers.

With the win, we sit at 1-0 and we learn that we've moved up to #3 in the polls.

Game 2--at Portland State

We decide to stop at Portland State on our way up to Alaska for the Top of the World Invitational. It is Portland State's first game of the year. We don't find it to be the cake walk we had planned it to be. We trail by one at the half, and despite shooting 62% from the field, we have to eek out a 82-74 win. We turn the ball over 19 times and shoot under 50% from the foul line. We also may be a victim of a bit of home cooking as Portland State makes more free throws than we attempt. All five starters score in double figures and Vernon Raynor leads the way with 15.

Game 3--vs. Yale (Top of the World Invitational)

Yale has been promoted to the Colonial Athletic Association, sending Towson to the Ivy League (I love conference movement in FBCB, but this is hard to get used to). They've made the FBCA tournament five of the last six years and made the Sweet 16 once in that span. They come off a 21-9 season where they won their third Ivy League title in a row. They return three starters, and despite having six seniors, they are pretty inexperienced overall. This is their first game.

We roll past them 78-52, holding their star Russell Hill to 8 points. Delmer Jones leads the way for us again, scoring 17 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. We only shoot 46% from the floor, but hold Yale to 36% shooting.

Game 4--Top of the World Semi-Finals vs. #25 Kansas

Kansas is still Kansas, with a trophy case a mile long and a string of consecutive tournament appearances. This Kansas team is young though, very young. They only have one senior, who started his first game in the Top of the World first round, and they have no other returning starters. They beat Indiana State 75-54 in the first round of the top of the world though. We expect our depth and experience to carry us here.

We are wrong though. We only shoot 42% from the floor and lose a tough one 61-60. Delmer Jones has 10 points and 14 boards, and John Simmons scores 14, but no one else can get going. We'll have to settle for a consolation game against UNLV, while Kansas faces #2 Illinois for the Top of the World Title.

Game 5--vs. UNLV (Top of the World Consolation Game)

We struggle to come back from our loss, but we ultimately prevail over a pesky UNLV squad, 69-64. Delmer Jones has another double double and John Simmons adds 11 points. We shoot 46% from the floor, but we turn the ball over 20 times (including 10 UNLV steals). We're glad to head back to Atlanta.

We finish the Top of the World with a 4-1 record. We're still ranked third in the polls, eight spots ahead of Kansas, who blew out Illinois 80-57 to win the Top of the World.

Game 6--Air Force (0-2)

We return home from Alaska to find John Beattie, our starting power forward, nursing a bruised jaw he received against UNLV. He is day to day and will play against Air Force. Back in the comforts of home, we don't expect trouble against the guard heavy Falcons.

The game is a good news, bad news game. On the good side, we roll to a 92-63 victory. We shoot 54%, and Vernon Raynor scores 20. Tony Schuh comes off the bench to score 17.

The bad news is that James Cohen injures himself. He is day to day also, but in our front loaded schedule his effectiveness may be limited. Delmer Jones also fouls out in only six minutes of action. He still manages to put up six shots, score six points, and pull down three rebounds in that time.

Game 7--Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-1)

We play Wisconsin-Milwaukee two nights later, another young team, with only one returning starter, SG Gabe Kunkle. Kunkle has been their leading scorer for the last two seasons and remains so after two games this season.

Another easy victory--79-52. John Simmons has 15 points, Delmer Jones pulls down 12 boards and Adrian Davis comes off the bench to contribute 11 assists. We force 29 turnovers, including 12 steals.

Game 8--Morehead State (0-2)

Morehead State only has two starters coming back from its Final Four team of last season. They've opened the season with losses to Liberty and Florida Atlantic, and have no one averaging in double digits.

For the Jackets, John Beattie is now at full strength.

Morehead State puts up a fight, but we overcome a 41-35 halftime deficit to win 76-67. A healthy Beattie drops in 16 and Delmer Jones adds 12. Beattie and Jones hold their opposing starting PF and C to 0 points. Of concern, however, is the fact that Morehead State outrebounds us 41-35. We also shoot 1-15 from behind the three point line.

At the end of the day, we improve our record to 7-1. We also move up to #2, behind 5-0 Creighton, in the polls.

Game 9--Missouri (2-3)

Missouri is the most experienced team we've played from a returning starter perspective. They have four starters returning and their fifth starter this season is a senior, who has been a key reserve every year to this point. Outside of the starting line-up, however, they had no players with any experience prior to this season. They are coming off their second straight FBIT 3rd place finish. They've started the season 2-3, including a fourth place finish in the Great Alaska Classic (with losses to UConn and Oklahoma).

Missouri drills us 92-72. The game is encapsulated by two stats. They shoot 10-16 from three point land. We shoot 11-30 from the free throw line, including 1-12 by Delmer Jones. A pathetic performance.

We finish November at 7-2, with the meat of our non-conference schedule ahead of us.

Delmer Jones is averaging a double double and we have three other players in double figures.

As a team, we are shooting 50% from the field through the first nine games, but only about 63% from the free throw line.

Before the Missouri debacle, we were ranked second in the country in the polls, but only 59th in the RPI--due mainly to our opponents being weaker than we first thought.

December looks to be a tough month with games against UConn and Illinois, before wrapping up our pre-conference schedule with a hopefully easy win against Alcorn State.

Game 10--#12 Illinois (3-1)

Illinois has been one of the top 3 programs in the nation over the course of my career. They are the defending FBCA champions (their sixth title overall) and they haven't missed an FBCA tournament. They are on a string of five consecutive Elite 8's or better. They return four starters and four other contributors, yet they only have two seniors. They are much stronger in the back court, so we should be able to have success inside, and hope our defensive stoppers contain their guards.

It doesn't happen. They get 20 from their point guard and 12 from their shooting guard and beat us 83-68. We get 22 from Jones and 12 from Beattie, but we only shoot 43% from the field. They are on fire from the field, shooting 57% and pull away from us at the end. We fall to 7-3.

Game 11--#5 UConn (4-1)

UConn is another top five program. They have four national titles, seven final fours and 24 straight tournament appearances. They return three starters, including shooting guard Elroy Luna, who narrowly chose the Huskies over us three seasons ago. Luna is averaging 16 points a game to go along with seven rebounds and four and a half assists.

Luna goes off for 24, as does their point guard. They hold on for an 86-80 win, after jumping out to a 51-27 half time lead on us. They shoot 56% for the game. On our end, we're undone by poor shooting again (36%). Four starters do score in double figures and John Beattie pulls down 15 rebounds, but it is all for naught.

We are now 7-4. We fall to #15 in the nation. Connecticut is the new #1.

Game 12--Alcorn State (7-3)

We're looking to boost our confidence before conference play starts. We have some time off for exams and get back in action on New Year's Eve. After the lay-off, we find ourselves ranked 21st. Alcorn State is unranked.

We cruise to a 78-47 win. Delmer Jones has 12 and 12 and John Beattie drops in 20. We head into conference play.

We jump way up to 10th after our win over Alcorn State. Illinois is first and Connecticut second. Missouri has also been holding its own and is ranked 12th. Kansas has fallen off the radar after a 5-0 start.

We're also ranked 17th in the RPI.

ACC Preview

We are the defending ACC regular season champs, and have won it 8 of the last 10 years. A repeat this year is not certain, however. Here is how the rest of the conference stacks up:

Wake Forest #3--Wake has probably been the most consistent team in the ACC over the course of my career. They have a career winning record against every team in the conference. They return four starters this season off of a team that was 11-5 in the conference last season and lost in the second round of the FBCA tournament. They are led by junior power forward Hilton Berman, who has declared for the draft. He is a returning first team all conference pick and was the freshman of the year the season before last. He's averaging 23 points and 8 boards a game this year. Shooting guard Larry Muir is also a returning all-conference selection. Other than that, they feature solid, but not outstanding role players. They've racked up some impressive victories in the early season, beating Seton Hall, Boston College and Creighton. We get them later in the conference schedule, but at this point, they are the team to beat.

North Carolina--UNC is coming off a final four run and a stretch of nine straight tournament appearances, with 2 other final four appearances. They have four starters returning and four other significant contributors back. They should be an easy pick to be at the top of the league. However, they've struggled in the pre-conference season. Only SF Tony Vanzant is averaging in double figures at 11.5. Starting shooting guard Tony Wahl is suspended for academics. They are 7-4 overall, with wins over the poorer teams they've played and losses when they've faced tougher competition. Still, they have enough back to finish in the top half of the league.

Virginia--Virginia returns 2 starters and 4 other contributors from a team that went 7-9 in the conference last year and made the FBCA tournament. They are 9-4 overall and ranked 40th in the RPI. They have a great win over Michigan State. The Hoos are led by SF Westin Horne, a returning All-ACC selection, who is averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds a game. If Virginia has a weakness, it is their lack of depth. They are still in rebuilding mode (just 3 years removed from an 0-16 trip through the conference) and everyone below their sixth man is a one star player.

Duke--Duke is Duke, except not in this dynasty. After early success, where they won back to back national titles and made it to three final fours, Duke has been wildly inconsistent. They finished last season 14-16 and return 3 starters from that team. They are ranked 90th in the RPI and have a solid win over Pitt. They have a solid backcourt led by Mason Staples, who leads the ACC with 24 points a game. They have major holes in their front court, however, with little talent and no depth at the center and power forward spots.

FSU--The Seminoles return four starters from a team that went 12-17 and 6-10 in the conference. However, freshman point guard Michael Brown has beaten out David Battles for the starting point guard slot. Power forward Leandro Overstreet, a returning freshman all american, is the Noles' best player, averaging 16.6 points and 8 rebounds a game. Florida State has the ability to compete for a post-season bid in a watered down ACC. They've struggled a bit out of the gates though, and are 6-4 and ranked 76th in the RPI.

Maryland--The Terps have raced out to a 9-3 record, but they've done it by beating up on the little guy. They are ranked 104th in the RPI and have only played one game vs. the top 50. They are coming off a 5-11 conference finish and haven't made the post-season in five years. They return five starters, including power forward Michael Towle, who is averaging 16 points a game. They play two point guards in their back court, the better of which is Benjamin Davis, who is scoring at a 13 point clip and picking up about 6 assists a game.

North Carolina State--If Maryland has had success by playing the little guy, NCSU has had success playing the even littler guy. They are 9-3 but have only played 2 games (losing both) against the top 100. They are ranked 144th in the RPI. They have a couple of good players, in senior center Markus Scales (22 ppg and 7 rpg) and junior shooting guard Jerry Dodd (16 ppg), but they don't have the depth to compete over the course of the season.

Clemson--The Tigers have no seniors, no returning starters and only 3 players with any significant playing experience prior to this season. That explains their 1-11 start. They only have a two point win over tiny Gardner-Webb to show for their efforts and they are 0-5 vs. the 200+ in the RPI. A conference win would be a significant achievement for this squad.

And my predictions:

1. Wake Forest 14-2
2. Georgia Tech 12-4
3. North Carolina 11-5
4. Virginia 8-8
5. Duke 8-8
6. FSU 7-9
7. Maryland 6-10
8. NCSU 6-10
9. Clemson 0-16

Game 13--vs. Duke (6-7)

Duke is coming off a third place finish in the Rainbow Classic, but is 6-7 overall. We want to try to control Mason Staples and pound the ball inside.

We hammer them 76-55. Staples gets his 22, but Lenny Henry matches him with 21. Raynor, Beattie and Jones all hit for double figures for us. We shoot 58% and hold Duke to under 40%. We're 9-4 and 1-0 in the conference.

Game 14--at Virginia (11-5)

Virginia has started off the conference season 2-1 with two wins over Clemson and a 9 point loss at Wake Forest. [I'll insert one of my only FBCB gripes here: the conference schedules. I wish you could play a round robin and then another round robin like the ACC really does. Too often I find myself playing Clemson on Wednesday at home and on Saturday on the road. Our schedule quirk this year finds us playing 5 of 6 on the road at one point. I know scheduling in text sims is tough, and I'm pleased this is my biggest gripe with the game.]

We pound Virginia on the road 74-54. Jones, Beattie and Raynor drop in 17, 14 and 13, respectively. We're off to a solid 2-0 start in conference play. We're the only undefeated team left in conference, as NCSU has beaten Wake.

Game 15--vs. Georgia (5-8)

We complete our non-conference schedule by also finishing our home and home with in-state rival Georgia. Georgia had our number early in the series, but we've won about 6 in a row from them, and have taken the overall series lead from them. They have five players back from last year's team (all seniors). The rest are freshman and redshirt freshman or guys who keep the bench warm.

Meanwhile we've moved up to 9th in the polls.

We beat Georgia easily 67-50. Beattie has 16 and James Cohen has 13 off the bench. We shoot 55% and force 19 Georgia turnovers to move to 10-4 overall.

Game 16--vs. Maryland (12-4)

We turn around and play Maryland on Wednesday, after playing Georgia on Monday. Maryland has started 3-1 in conference play with wins over UNC, NCSU and at FSU. They have one loss on the road to Duke.

They sting us at home 75-62. None of our starters score in double figures. James Cohen does come off the bench to chip in 16, however we can't overcome 19 turnovers and 26 team fouls. They shoot a total of 37 free throws. Where is the home cookin' when we need it? Maryland now leads the conference with a 4-1 record. We are 2-1 in the conference after a bad loss at home.

Game 17--at Clemson (2-14)

The big news is that Clemson won a conference game. They beat Duke at Duke by 12. We've fallen to #12 in the polls, but we hope to get a road win here. We do, but it is not as easy as we hope. We jump out to a 15 point half time lead, but Clemson holds us to 23 points in the second half. We hold on for a 60-53 win. Delmer Jones has 16 and 7 to lead the way. We improve to 12-5 and 3-1 in the conference.

That takes us to the end of January. February 1 rolls around and we maintain our #12 ranking in the polls.

Game 18--at Duke (9-11)

Duke has lost three in a row, including the loss to Clemson, and they would love nothing more than to get back on track with a win over us. We want to do more of what we did in our first game with them. Pound the ball inside. Contain Mason Staples. Get a win.

Well, Mason Staples gets his 25 and Duke also gets 20 from its power forward Noe Merry and 12 from center Antwan Stlaurent...but, we sneak out of Durham with an 85-82 victory. Vernon Raynor drops in 17 and John Beattie adds 16. All ten of our regular rotation gets at least a basket. We shoot 58%, including 67% from three point land. We move to 13-5 and 4-1 in the conference.

Game 19--vs. Virginia (12-10)

Virginia has run into some hard luck. Three of their starters are out with either injuries or because of academics. A fourth regular player is injured. They have also lost three in a row and appear to be spiraling downward.

We complete our season sweep of the Hoos with an easy 77-38 win. Delmer Jones and John Simmons score 16. We force 31 turnovers and shoot 53%. We move to 14-5 and 5-1 in the conference.

Game 20--at Florida State (11-8, 2-4)

We travel to Florida State after two big wins. A third would be nice and would keep us in solid shape in the conference race. Maryland and Wake are both 6-2. We could get our sixth win against only one loss. FSU has lost two in a row on Tobacco Road. Coming into the game, FSU's guards have an assist to turnover ratio of about 1-1. We want to turn up the defensive intensity and force them into a sloppy game.

We do just that, forcing 23 turnovers to our 13. We win 82-63. Simmons leads the way for us with 18 and Delmer Jones and John Beattie both have double doubles. Jones adds 3 blocked shots and 4 assists for an all around solid game. We improve to 15-5 and 6-1. I think I forgot to mention that we moved up to 10th in the latest poll. We're also 14th in the RPI.

Game 21--at #9 Wake (17-3, 6-2)

A huge conference game for first place in the league. Wake comes in on a two game win streak. We're riding a 4 game win streak. Our task here is simple. Contain Hilton Bermon. He's still averaging 21 and 9 and is easily on his way to conference player of the year honors. Beattie and Jones are tough inside, but are they up to this challenge?

We jump on them early and lead by as many as 16 in the first half on our way to a 42-28 lead at the break. Berman only has 7 at the break, and we're holding Wake to under 40% shooting. Wake makes its run in the second half (as every good team does) led by Berman, who finishes with 21 in the game. They pull it to 63-58 with a little over two minutes left, but that is as close as they get. We put in the last six from the free throw line and come away with a huge road win 69-58. We sit alone in first place at 7-1 in the conference.

Thanks tucker.

Game 22--at #17 Maryland (18-5, 7-2)

This is our second road game against a conference contender. We're a half game up on Maryland. We're also #7 in the new poll. Maryland is continuing its surprising conference run. They've won four in a row and are up to #17 in the polls. They've also increased their rpi to #17 (we are #11 in the rpi). Maryland is doing it with balanced play and contributions from eight guys. We turned the ball over and got into foul trouble when we lost to them in Atlanta. We need to play a controlled game this time.

Who cares what kind of control you play with when you shoot 60% from the field? We only lead 41-38 at the half. But we keep making shots in the second half, including 5-9 from outside the arc. We blow them out in the second half for an 82-62 win. All five of our starters score in double figures. Lenny Henry adds seven assists and John Beattie snags 11 boards.

At 8-1 in the conference, we are feeling pretty good.

Game 23--vs. Clemson (2-21, 1-10)

Clemson has come back down to earth after its big win against Duke. The Tigers have lost seven in a row, six of those at home. Our goal for this game is simply to stay healthy.

We accomplish our goal on our way to a 94-51 win. Clemson turns the ball over 36 times. John Beattie has another double double. Lawrence Ullman comes off the bench to score 15, and Tony Schuh has 11. We move to 9-1 in the conference and 18-5 overall. We're a game and a half up on Wake in the conference race.

Here's a question: to your knowledge, has Clemson ever snapped their road losing streak at UNC? I've thought that in real life, Clemson should be made to play UNC every year in the new conference arrangement so they can have that chance to either get rid of that millstone or watch it grow ever bigger.

Wolfpack: In my game Clemson is 17-60 over the course of the dynasty against UNC. I haven't noticed whether they've won a game in Chapel Hill.

Game 24--vs. North Carolina State (15-9, 6-5)

We have the Saturday game off before hosting NCSU on a Monday night. Wake wins on Saturday to pull within a game of us in the conference (but we are two games up in the loss column).

NCSU comes to town after a win against Maryland. They are 6-5 in the conference and 15-9 overall. They are ranked 65 in the rpi and find themselves sitting squarely outside the bubble, looking in. We'll have to try to contain Markus Scales in this one. He's still averaging over 20 points a game from the 5 spot.

We can't do it. Scales hits us up for 27, and holds Delmer Jones to 7. Four of their five starters score in double figures. We shoot 38% from the floor. End result: NCSU 79, Tech 70. We're disappointed after our second home loss of the season, especially because we thought we were on a bit of a roll. We also give NCSU's tourney hopes a big lift.

Game 25--at #11 North Carolina (18-8, 9-4)

Another road game with the conference lead at stake. We would fall into a tie with Wake and UNC with a loss. UNC comes into the game hot. They've won 5 in a row, all by a dozen or more. Everett Cary is making a major push for conference freshman of the year honors, averaging 14 a game. Tony Wahl is back from his suspension. UNC is becoming the solid team we thought they would be.

Our road magic continues, though. We jump out to a double digit lead early and maintain it, heading into the half. We are never threatened in the second half and cruise to an 82-68 win. John Simmons has 25 to lead the way. Delmer Jones adds 10 points and 14 boards. We redeem the loss to NCSU somewhat and reassert ourselves atop the conference grid. At 10-2, we're back to a full game up on Wake and we've pretty much taken the Heels out of the conference picture.

Game 26--vs. #8 Wake Forest (21-4, 10-3)

Wake comes to town for a game that pretty much amounts to the conference championship for us. If we win, we'll be two games clear of Wake in the loss column and own a tie-breaker against them (I think). If we lose, we're a half game behind them with UNC, NCSU and FSU to play. Not the position we want to put ourselves in. Like before, we simply want to control Berman--we don't think Wake's role players can beat us.

We jump on them early again, and lead 60-38 at the half. We're shooting 60% from the floor. The deficit is too great, and Wake can't even put a run together. We cool off from the floor, but that can't stop us from blowing out Wake 88-61. Delmer Jones has 16 and 8 and John Beattie has 15 and 10. We hold Hilton Berman to 12 points.

March 2037

We head into March in pretty good position. We are 10-2 in the conference and 20-6 overall. We finish the season with two home games and one road game. Of course, it is worth noting that both of our conference losses are at home.

We are still ranked #7 in the polls, and we are 9th in the RPI. Depending on how we finish, we have a good shot to be a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament.

The current top 25:

Before heading into the three final regular season games, we'll offer a little update on my individual players.

Some general team notes. Nine guys are averaging more than 10 minutes a game. Tony Schuh is averaging 9 minutes a game.

As a team, we rank first in the nation in assists (21.2 per game) and field goal percentage (.491). We're also first in the conference in points allowed (63.1) and steals (9.3) per game.

Delmer Jones is averaging 12.9 points and 9.3 rebounds a game.

John Beattie is averaging 11.7 points and 7.7 boards.

Vernon Raynor is at 10.3 and 3.7.

John Simmons is at 10.3 and 2.8 assists per game.

Lenny Henry is the only starter not in double figures, at 7.7 a game, but he is handing out 4.3 assists per game.

As a whole the bench is averaging 25.1 points per game.

We've developed some solid depth over the course of the season. Let's hope it will benefit us this post-season.

Game 26--at N.C. State (17-10, 8-6)

The Wolf Pack has lost to FSU and beaten Virginia since our last meeting. We head into Raleigh wanting revenge and looking to clinch at least a tie in the conference race. Our point of emphasis will be containing Markus Scales, something we failed miserably at in Atlanta. Jerry Dodd is averaging 14.5 a game from the SG position. Let's make him beat us.

We sort of contain Scales in the first half and jump out to a 37-29 lead. He has 11 at the break. We pour on the pressure in the second half and pull away for a 78-58 victory. Scales finishes with 23 and Dodd adds 13, but the Pack can't get anything from anyone else. We force 20 turnovers and go to the line 27 times, which helps us offset a 40.6% night from the field. Delmer Jones has 14, as does John Simmons. John Beattie adds 10, and all 10 of our main rotation contributes at least a bucket. We finish 8-0 on the road in the ACC and can do no worse than tie for the conference crown. A win at home over either FSU or UNC clinches the title. We also improve to 21-6 overall.

Game 27--vs. FSU (13-14, 4-10)

We come home and look to clinch the conference title. FSU has lost 2 in a row, 5 out of 6 and 8 out of 10. Our strategy here is the same as before. Force them into a sloppy game and score a lot off of their turnovers.

We roll from the start, taking a 41-28 lead at the half and stretching it into an 84-62 victory. Delmer Jones leads the way with 19 and 9. Vernon Raynor adds 17 and John Simmons has 13. We shoot 53% from the field and have 24 assists as a team. We also hold Leandro Overstreet to just 7 points.

At 13-2, we've clinched the regular season title and the number one seed in the conference tournament. We are also 22-6 overall and looking like a number 2 seed if we can hold our course.

Game 29--North Carolina (19-9, 10-5)

We move up to #5 in the polls heading into our regular season finale. We hold tight at #9 in the RPI.

With a win, Carolina could be the number 2 seed in the conference tournament (or they could still be the 4 with a win). With a loss, they will definitely be the 4. The Heels have had a two week rest after a victory over FSU. They are ranked #13 in the country and are a lock for the tournament. As with the conference tourney, they are playing for seeding in the big dance.

James Cohen is the savior coming off the bench. We lead comfortably at the half 38-31, but UNC narrows the gap, gradually in the second half. Cohen becomes our go to guy though and is flawless down the stretch. He finishes 8-12 from the field with 16 points. We gut out a 62-59 win. John Simmons has 14 and Vernon Raynor has 10.

We finish the regular season at 23-6 and 14-2 in the conference. Elsewhere, Maryland beats Duke to wrap up the second seed in the conference. Wake loses to FSU and will be the third seed. We'll play the winner of the play-in game between Clemson and Virginia in the first round of the conference tournament.

The final ACC standings:

Georgia Tech 14-2
Maryland 12-4
Wake Forest 10-6
North Carolina 10-6
NC State 9-7
Duke 7-9
Florida State 5-11
Virginia 4-12
Clemson 1-15

So, my predictions were pretty miserable. About the only thing I got right was Clemson finishing last and being lucky to win a game.

Thursday Night Play-In Game
Virginia 83, Clemson 71 The Hoos advance to face us on Friday.

Quarterfinal game vs. Virginia (14-16)

We've beaten Virginia by a combined 59 points in two games this season. We're hoping for an easy first round win before a likely third match-up with North Carolina.

We win, but it certainly wasn't easy. Virginia leads 32-31 at the half and we're deadlocked at the end of regulation. We go to overtime where we score the first six points and hold on for a 78-76 victory. John Beattie is the star with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Lenny Henry adds 14 and Vernon Raynor scores 12. It is the post-season and we're happy with any victory. Survive and advance. Survive and advance.

In the other quarterfinals:
NC State comes back from 13 down at the half, but falls just short against North Carolina. The Heels win 74-72.
Wake and Maryland have no trouble, winning 82-58 and 70-58 over Duke and Florida State, respectively.

NC State's loss puts them squarely back on the bubble. They are 18-12, which is solid, but they are 68th in the rpi, with 10 games against 200+ opponents. I think they are bound for the FBIT.

Semi Finals

The top four teams advance to the semi finals. Each team is ranked in the top 15 in the nation. We play UNC, and Maryland plays Wake.

Semi Final--vs. #13 North Carolina

Not much has changed since our game with them earlier this week--other than the fact we are now at a neutral site. Beating a team of UNC's caliber three times in a season is always tough. If we win, though, we have to feel pretty good about our chances at a #2 seed in the tournament. A loss probably slots us on the third seed line.

We trade blows in a sloppy first half. We're shooting 39% from the floor and 45% from the foul line. Carolina is a wretched 29% from the floor, but they have lived at the line (where they are 7-8). They lead 32-30.

The game is tight the entire second half. We stretch things out to a five point lead with five minutes left, but UNC quickly runs off seven in a row to take a two point lead. With a minute left, we're tied at 75. We hold them and have the ball. We miss a quick one but pull down the offensive rebound, with the shot clock turned off. John Simmons drives to the hoop a little earlier than I would have liked. He's fouled with 11 seconds left and goes to the line. He hits the first one, but misses the second. Carolina rebounds and calls time out to set up for its last chance, down 76-75.

They pass it around and get off a three pointer....no good. We survive and advance to the conference final.

Vernon Raynor scored 22 points and John Beattie pulled down 12 rebounds for us. Delmer Jones tweaked his knee early in the game. He'll be ready for the big dance, but we are considering holding him out of the conference final.

We stick around and watch the Wake vs. Maryland game to see who we will play for the tournament championship. It is never a contest. Wake rolls to a 72-46 win behind Hilton Berman's 24 points and 13 rebounds.

ACC Final--vs. #10 Wake (24-7)

The buzz is that with a win we could sneak in to the fourth number one seed in the FBCA tournament. We aren't buying it, especially since we have to contend with Hilton Berman for a third time (and maybe without Delmer Jones).

We learn prior to game time that Jones is definitely out. James Cohen will start at center and Vernon Raynor will get a lot of playing time at power forward. We'll throw bodies at Berman and try to beat Wake for the third time as well.

It is Wake that jumps out to an early lead in this one. We are down 15-5 before we know it. We battle back to tie the score at 30, but Wake extends it again before the half and goes into the locker room up 47-37. Berman is killing us on the inside and has 21 at the break. We stick around in the second half, due in part to getting Berman in foul trouble. The lead goes from 8 to 6 to 4. But Wake keeps hitting big shots every time we pull close. Finally, with 1:16 left we score to make it 69-66. Wake brings it down and we get a stop. With just under a minute left, we have the ball needing a three to tie. We move it around the arc and look for John Simmons on the outside. The pass is off, however and Wake's Taylor McKenzie steals it and streaks down the court for an easy lay-up. We bring it back down, but our two three pointers are off. We fall 71-66.

In Jones's absence, John Beattie has 21 and Christopher Smith pulls down 11 rebounds. We now sit and watch the selection show.

I still feel pretty good about our chances of getting a two seed.

Wake may also be in line for a two seed.

I would think that UNC will probably be a four seed and Maryland will be a five or a six. NCSU will have to settle for the FBIT to round out the ACC's post season.

Selection Sunday

The West is first. As expected, USC is the number one seed. They are #1 overall and won the Pac 10. UConn pulls in the second seed. We actually thought they would get a number one seed, but they lost to Seton Hall in the Big East quarterfinals. Creighton is the number three seed, and Alabama is the number four. No ACC teams are heading West.

The Midwest is next. We have to figure Illinois is the number one here, and we are right. We also find out that we are the number two seed here. It is about what we expected, and we have to be pleased. We'll take on McNeese State in the first round and then play the winner of Butler and Kansas (a little revenge from the Top of the World anyone?). Syracuse is the number three seed, and Arizona rounds out the bracket as a solid number four.

Seton Hall is a somewhat odd selection as the number one seed in the South. They lost to BC in the Big East final (which has to lead me to believe BC is the number one in the East). Michigan State is the second seed here, followed by Stanford as the three. Maryland lands in the South as the number four seed.

Boston College is the number one in the East. Wake is the number two. Kentucky gets the third seed and La Salle is the four. Carolina is in the East as a number five seed. NC State does have to settle for the FBIT.

NCAA Tournament

The real season and the point of this dynasty begins. Can we win six games and march to the championship? Can we cut down the nets? Can I get the monkey off my back of having not ever won a championship?

First Round--vs. McNeese State (20-11, Southern Conference Champion)

McNeese State finished third in the Southern Conference regular season, before getting on a roll and winning the conference tournament to secure the automatic bid to the tournament. On paper, we are a much better team than them. Their best recruits are two stars. No one on their team would start for us. They are ranked 135 in the rpi, with 18 games against 200+ competition. But...we don't play the games on paper. And we lost in the first round of the tournament last year. They appear to have a pretty good power forward and a decent small forward. We'll try and force a lot of turnovers and, like in the ACC tournament...SURVIVE AND ADVANCE.

We play on Thursday. We would have preferred a Friday game to give Delmer Jones an extra day of rest. He is 90% though and will play.

The first half starts slow. We aren't shooting well out of the gate, but we seize the lead early in the half. We can't shake them though. We stretch the lead to 28-19, but they run off an 11-2 spurt and it is tied at 30. We pull back in front and head into the locker room up 38-34. Tony Schuh is doing it for us off the bench. He has 9 first half points. We're shooting 43% as a team.

We still can't shake them in the second half. We stretch the lead to 8. They cut it to five. We stretch the lead to 9. They cut it to 7. And so on. With just over 3 minutes left they nail a three to tie the score at 61. We immediately answer to go back up by 2.

We trade turnovers.

Less than a minute left, McNeese ball. Three from the top of the key....Good. We trail 64-63. Not again.

We pass the ball around. Simmons drives to the base line with under five seconds to play. He gets off a shot....it rattles out....but wait....he's fouled. The clock reads all zeros.

Simmons goes to the line for two.

The first one is....good.

The second one is....gooooooooood.

Final score: Georgia Tech 65, McNeese State 64.

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE.

Elsewhere in the first round, the tournament has few surprises. Memphis upsets fourth seeded LaSalle in the East. Boston College has to go to overtime to beat IUPUI, but they survive. We'll see if the second round provides more of an upset flavor (though hopefully not for us).

Second Round—vs. #23 Butler (26-6)

Butler won the regular season title and the conference tourney in the Horizon League. They beat Kansas 69-61 in the first round. Butler went 16-0 in the regular season against teams ranked 200 or worse in the rpi. They come into the second round as one of the hottest teams in the nation, having won 21 out of 23 games. They look a good bit like us on paper, in that they spread the ball around without a true superstar. They go nine deep and have 4 guys in double figures and 6 guys who score more than 7 a game. Austin Lee is their top scorer at about 17 a game. He is a shooting guard who plays the three for them, and likes to shoot from the outside. As a whole they are relatively small, and we'll hope to pound them inside.

The game is nip and tuck through the first 17 minutes. With 3:25 left in the first half, we lead 26-24. We absolutely fall apart, while Butler can do no wrong. Actually Austin Lee can do no wrong. Over the next three minutes he scores 14 points (giving him 18 for the half) including a three point bomb from half court at the buzzer. All together, Butler scores the last 18 points of the first half and they take a 16 point lead into the locker room. We are shell shocked and try to re-group in the locker room.

We just can't overcome that last spurt of the first half. We make a few runs in the second half but we can't pull closer than 8. Butler's point guard Charlie Northrop lights it up in the second half to finish with 21, just behind Lee who only adds four in the second half but ends the game with 22 points.

So our tournament jinx continues. We bow out in the second round, in what can only be termed a miserable performance. Delmer Jones leads the way with 11 points and 15 rebounds, but we only shoot 39% as a team. We turn the ball over 16 times.

And the refrain in Atlanta is a common one. Wait till next year.

In the end, USC, Tulsa, Illinois and Wake make the final four. Wake was the only ACC school to make the Sweet 16.

USC and Illinois advance to the title game, where Southern Cal wins its first national title. They finish the year 38-2 and are a worthy champion. Fortunately for everyone else, they lose three starters and their sixth man.

As far as all conference selections go, I nail the first team and four out of five on the freshman team, but only get two of three right on the second team. Berman is the PoTY and Obryant surpises by winning the FoTY. Twitty is a very deserving CoTY.
