CD/DVD Drive replacement
Okay first off let me say i know very little about computer hardware other than how to use it. My CD drive died on me the other day and i am wondering if i should try to install a new one myself or pay a local store about $40 to install it. I currently have a 3 year old Gateway desktop that i will be replacing soon and moving to my office to replace a dieing Gateway that is approaching 7 years and still runs on Windows 98. Thanks in advance for any advice.

it's pretty easy to do - maybe a 2 difficulty on a 5 star scale...if that.

This should be a very easy thing to do... just copy exactly how your current CD drive is in right now. The way the cables are connected to it, etc... But I have no idea really, since I know how to do it, and don't know how hard it is for someone that's never done it before. |

Ditto. The hardest part of the whole thing is probably figuring out how to open and close the casing. If you can figure that out you handle it. Most new players come with simple instructions anyways.

If you have the extra cash, I would spend the extra 30 bucks and get a DVD burner.

Okay a quick update. Now the damn computer is barely working. When it boots to the desktop it takes forever and a day to go anywhere. When i click on an icon about 10 minutes later it actually opens the program. Of course i cannot try to do a system restore or use the Cds that came with the computer because my CD drive doesnt work. Man i just love computers.

What operating system is this? If it is Windows XP or Windows 2000, it sounds like you might have a corrupt user profile. That can cause symptoms like you described, the slow response, and the appearance of the CD ROM not working.

I am using Windows XP. I know for sure that the CD drive isnt working because my 4 year old decided he wanted the CD more than the CD drive did and it doesnt open anymore. Any ideas on what to do? I have tried to go back to a previous system restore point or whatever you call it but i cannot even get into the control panel.
