Who's your favorite athlete who pretty much sucks?

Everyone has that one guy they love for some reason or another that has nothing to do with what they do on the field. Maybe there was a past college triumpth you remember fondly, or perhaps the guy is just so likeable you can look past his horrid OBP or shooting percentage.

Personally, my favorite guy is a recent addition but I love Aaron Downey. He can't skate, he can't pass, he surely can't score and even though he drops the gloves he usually loses his fights. Still, he is a great teammate who'll stick up for the big guns even if it means he'll take a severe beating and hearing him talk after a game is like seeing a kid in a candy shop. He just truly loves hockey and he embraces his role. That kind of attitude is infectious.

Even though he was an All-Star, I'd say I'm one of the very few who like Antoine Walker. Ever since his Kentucky days, and of course being drafted by my C's helped, but I'll always have a special place in my heart for Employee #8.

Arturs Irbe will always be my favorite hockey player. Sharks are my team and it was hard not to like the guy even though he only really had 1 good year with the Sharks. Was fairly solid in Carolina but never was that great a goalie.

As an LSU and Saints fan, Devery Henderson is that guy for me. He made the catch in the Blue Grass Miracle and then was drafted by the Saints in the 2nd round. Unfortunately, his Saints career has been marred by the dropsies. I hope he can overcome his problem and have a breakout year, but somehow I doubt it.

Runnerups would be other LSU players in the pros who have just not panned out:

Ryan Freel. He plays like his ass is on fire and he has an imaginary midget friend named Farney.

I wouldn't say this guy neccesarily sucked, but he was never a star player. Joe Girardi was my favorite baseball player growing up, just because he seemed like such a nice guy but was a really tough and gritty catcher, always putting his body in front of the ball. He was an excellent defensive catcher, which I loved.

Right now, my favorite player in football is probably Chad Pennington, a guy who had a lot of potential but injuries really screwed him up. I really like him because he's extremely competetive, and because he's tough enough to play through multiple games, and win a playoff game, with a torn rotator cuff.

Also not close to suckatude, but I would go with Mike Karney, and pretty much any other decleating badass blocking FB. They don't suck, but they don't often get enough attention.

I still get goosebumps when I watch the game he had against the Cowboys in 2006, scoring three TDs. Madden and Michaels wondering outloud wtf is going on.

Not sure if he sucks, because to me he doesn't. I know he isn't a star and never really will be. Packer LB Brady Poppinga. I always say it Poppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiingaaaaaaaaaa. I love the name, and that is why I started to love the guy. And then he got another boost when I found out he named his son Julius Maximus Poppinga, that name is freakin' funny and cool all at the same time.

Jordin Tootoo, met him when he was at the world junior camp in 03, really nice guy, ever since then I've been a big fan. It's also good to see someone from a northern community do well, I have to imagine it has a big influence on the kids in the area.

He is one of my favorites as well- although very far away on the suck-meter, however he hardly get any mention...so I guess he can qualify for this.
The Dallas game was great, but one of my favorite plays of his was where he blocked 3 players on one play- I'm pretty sure it was against Atlanta and Duece ran in the TD.

God bless you. Look up "Stanford Utah" on Youtube, and you'll see a shot that he made to tie a sweet 16 game against a Van Horn/Majerus Utah team that was just amazing. I was at the San Jose arena for it, and he was just trying to draw foul, but wound up sinking the game-tying three. Stanford lost to Utah in OT, but I'll always remember that shot vividly.

Craig McEwen, tight end, and former player of the Chargers. He only had 6 career touchdowns in the the NFL, but I remember him because somehow he would get open in critical times of a game to make a huge play. He never started for an entire season, yet he was able to average over 350 receiving yards in his last two years with the Chargers. For whatever reason, I liked the guy because he was often overlooked and appeared to be slow, yet for whatever reason, he always managed to get wide open when it was needed the most.

I know exactly the game you are talking about. That was one of, if not the, first game of college basketball I ever saw. Ever since that game I was a big fan of both Knight and Andre Miller. By sheer chance both guys ended up at my favourite NBA team as rookies, and I've followed both their careers ever since, but Knight will always be my favourite, both because of that college game vs Stanford, and from his time in Cleveland.

If we're going all time I'd have to say Randy Hedberg. Good ole "Why not from Minot."

Hah, just googled him and saw this:

Quote:
That’s not a typo next to Randy Hedberg’s name. He actually averaged -2.29 AY/A in 1977, which not surprisingly, was the only year he played. But there’s only so much damage you can do with 90 attempts, so he didn’t hurt his team as much as Jake Plummer did in 1999.

hxxp://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=138

He was insanely popular in Tampa that year and people still ask about him when they bring up "where are they now" stories.

Nick VanExel and John Starks for basketball.

Van Exel is not my "favorite", but the one that most fits the topic. made some huuuuuge one-handed clutch baskets back when the pre-Kobe Lakers faced the Spurs in a late 90's postseason match.
