PDF files not working/freezing

Ever since I got my new laptop, a Gateway NV52 which runs Vista, I cannot open a pdf file. When I do open it, I see it for about a second and as soon as I try to move anything I see the little scroll icon which freezes on my screen. This lasts for about 5-10 minutes as I cannot do anything with my mouse. I can navigate, via keyboard, to the task manager to cancel the pdf but it still takes 5-10 mins to kick in.

I use Firefox but I've also tested this using IE and it does the same thing. This is ridiculous and I've had no luck on the small handful of solutions I've tried posted online.

I'm just not sure where I should begin but it is so annoying not being able to read pdf files.

1. Remove Adobe Acrobat.

2. Download and install FoxIt.

I second Foxit, although I'd recommend PDF Xchange even ahead of it (although both are lightyears better than Acrobat Reader).
