Hattrick: Newbie help with the new Toledo Drunkards.
Ok guys, you convinced me to try this out and I know nothing about soccer. I have read other dynasties and info about hattrick but I would really appreciate some help with the steep learning curve.

Any ideas on who to keep, and who gets cut are welcome and encouraged! Also any tips on a lineup would be great. I will figure out something and post my first thoughts very soon.
Here is some other information- Coach Jeff Crowder 45 years, passable form, healthy A weak coach who goes all out A controversial person who is fiery and honest. Has excellent experience and weak leadership abilities. Speciality: Technical I worry about his leadership abilities, he will probably be sacked soon. Training Training Level: 90% (Changing to 90%) Training Type: General Looks good to me... Youth Squad: wretched Investment in the Youth squad: 20 000 US$ / week Reading others dynasties, it seems I should invest 20 grand. And so it shall be... Goaltending Coaches: 1 Assistant Coaches: 2 Sport Psychologists: 1 Spokepersons: 1 Economists: 0 Physiotherapists: 1 Doctors: 1 Here is what I decided to do for my first hires. Coming up next I will post what I come up with for my first lineup. Keep in mind I know nothing about soccer... Last edited by Rich1033 : 02-28-2003 at 08:38 AM. |

The learning curve is not too bad. There are a few ground rules that will help you at lot. You may just have to take our word for it for now.
1) Youth squad to $20k a week. This will be your future life-line if you want to build a strong team. It will take a couple of seasons to get this up to its top level (excellent), but early improvements happen quickly. Here's my current improvement (I got my team 1/31): disasterous->wretched 1 week wretched->poor 1 week poor->weak 1 week weak->inadaquate 2 weeks 2) Inner midfielders are the most important positions on your squad and playmaking is the most important skill for these players with passing having some importance. Build here and set your lineups here, first. 3) Stay out of debt early on. If you feel you must make a move that puts you in debt, try to keep it to a minumum. 4) I see you have a passable keeper (Kev Sears). Good! Consider yourself lucky; most teams start with just an inadaquate one. You look like you may need to pick up a backup keeper (shoot for inad.) ASAP. Expect to pay $25-35,000 for an inad. keeper. 5) Patience and perseverance are required. It will take some time to get your team built up. 6) RTFM! There's a huge help section for beginners. Read it! You will begin to get a much better understanding. If you are not fimiliar with soccer (football) or the terms, just ask. I see your in last place in your league. You are mathematically eliminated from the money postions (1st-4th win prize money) so I would start moving (selling) all your older guys who you don't plan to keep long term. Keep in mind 27+ yo players typically don't improve any. Go young and train them up to better ratings. Shot to get the player improve to "passable" in his key rating before deciding to keep the player or move him for some $$. Most hattrickers decide to focus on one area for training and get young guys via transfers or the youth squad and improve their key skill level a notch or two and re-sell some of them and use that money for players in other positions. Schedule friendlies every week and try to play all the players who haven't played yet. Usually you play your 1st teamers in the league games and your 2nd teamers in the friendlies. It is also a good idea to use friendlies to train new formations other than the default 4-4-2. Key skill ratings: Goalie: Keeper Wing Back: Defending, then Winger Cen. Defense: Defending Wingers: Winger, then Playmaking/Passing Inner Mid.: Playmaking, then Passing Forwards: Scoring, then Passing Also keep in mind that form (current playing level) is important and that stamina can also be very important for midfield players and somewhat important for other outfield (i.e. non-goalie) players. There is a web page that will help you field your best team. I don't have the link handy. There is also a utility called Hattrick Assistant Manager (HAM) that helps track your players and their changes in skill and form over time. HAM will be free for another month, then you may have to pay a bit to use it. Whew! Hope all that helps.

Doctor is useless unless you really want to heal an injured player.
Physio : decrease the risk of injury (you could bump training to 91%). It is assumed 1 physio equals 1% training intensity. Sport psycho : don't know if it's useful so early Spokepersons : increase your fan support and sponsor money (I've got 4 and that's 30K income per week !!!) Goalkeeper/Assistant coaches : if you train keeper go 4/1, if you train anything else go 1/4 (at least for now, until you know what you can earn weekly) Coach : the only important thing is "A weak coach who goes all out"... You should fire him (be cautious as it costs 10K everytime you fire one). You should aim for at least a passable one (solid is better, inadequate slightly lower than passable) As for the lineup : go at mybestteam : http://www.mybestteam.tk/ You already have a passable goalie, that's a good point ! Good luck and be cautious on your spendings, don't go out and buy too quickly, get a feel for the transfert market first ! |

Training: I would hire a couple more Physios and bump it up to say 96% intensity. Eventually most hattrickers wind up with 98-100% intensity and 5 or 6 physios.
General training -- it only improves form, and most of your guys are weak or better so I wouldn't stick with it for long. You may want to train the skill with the most young players (you really don't have any yet). Most hattrickers train defending or playmaking and have 17-19 yo's playing defense or midfield respectivally in order to maximize skill improvements (young players improve more quickly). Coaches: Your coach is only weak, I would spend some bucks and see if you can get at least a passable coach. You may have to settle for an inad. You'll be damn lucky to get a solid coach (that's the tops). How much you want to spend is up to you. It cost $10,000 each time to fire your coach. Eventually, you will want to work up to 2 GK assistants and 8 assitant coaches. You may not want to make that big a jump just yet, especially with a last place team (you won't be making much money from gates--spectators coming to the games). Don't bother with any more doctors unless/until your players get injured. 1 spokesperson and 1 psychologist is good for now.

Wow, thanks for all the advice. My coach is about to be sent packing so I will see what I end up with. I also will bump it up to 5 assistant coaches and 2 physiotherapists. Training was changed to 96%.
Dacman- I do plan on doing a lot more reading. I have not looked at the transfer market yet. I will look to get a lot younger after I get a sense of the prices and how it works overall. Alf- thanks for the info and the links, I will check them out soon. I really appreciate the help. Thanks again! |

Here is the coach I received after one attempt. I will stick with him for now.
Barry Nunn (8556234) 49 years, disastrous form, healthy A passable coach who prefers a strong defensive game A sympathetic guy who is tranquil and upright. Has formidable experience and weak leadership abilities. Thats the last update for now. I am off to do some reading and learn more about the game. |

Coach
Nice job on the coach pickup. He's passable and sympathetic. The weak leadership is lacking a little and a lot of people prefer "all out" coaches vs defense but you could do a hell of a lot worse and it could cost you a hell of a lot more. Rosters Guys in (parentheses) should be replaced as soon as you can find someone with passable in their main attributes GK: Sears DW: Wallace, (Dowell) DM: McMullen WI: Nagendra (offensive) MI: (Douglas) FO: Alonzo, Ponce, Robbins CUT LOOSE/SELL: Herman, Martinez, Lauria, Garrison, Clay, Murray, Morrison, Sherrill Excellent luck with a passable goalie. Not only that but with a value of 157K in inad form, I bet he's really close to Solid. Alonzo's solid scoring makes him a really nice forward even if his passing is a little lacking. Ditto, Ponce. Tho he's a bit old. For winger, Dowell is the best of what you have but he's a bit old. McMullen is another soild in a key position. Not the youngest but a 26yo solid defender is a perfect middle defender for a starting team. Wallace is a pretty good wingback, too From the cut loose and sell pile, I'm not sure you'd get a whole lot from any of them so it might be best to just can them. You are seriously lacking middies and you need another winger or wingback depending on where you place Dowell (winger or wingback- I have him at wingback right now). I'd consider running a 3-4-3 since you have 3 good scorers in Alonzo, Ponce, and Robbins but the theory here is that midfield is the place to work hard on and I can't disagree. You should be able to pick up a passable playmaker on the cheap but I would recommend shelling out some cash ($60-80K) for a young, soild playmaker to shore up your middle. Quote:
Quote:
To be honest, you don't have the youngest guys but with a couple of key additions (passable winger and a nice middie), you could really compete in your league next year. Might want to keep some of that cash on hand for stadium improvements early next year when you see how good you are. Typically, I'm a huge advocate of starting over and selling your old guys who have skill. But your team is pretty well loaded if you pick up a couple of young middies. You might want to actually try to win next year if you can get on the learning curve. (Most) people think running a 3-4-3 is a death sentence but your team is best equipped for it. Talk to Coffee and ardent about the run and shoot and its feasability. SI

SI- Thanks for the advice. It really helped me in planning out a strategy to start out. We are going to try playing with 3 forwards for my first match and see how it goes.
I have added a few young players form the transfer market and cut some of the dead weight from my team. My youth squad is up to poor. Team spirit is calm. Confidence is decent. Ecomony Sponsors are content Supporters are content Supporters- 505 members Coming up I will list my new roster after some additions and subractions were made. I will also have the results of the first match since the team has come under my control. Stay tuned! |

[Edited to remove the listing of my whole roster to help the load time of this thread]
I still plan on cutting a few players. Sherill, Martinez and Clay will all be cut by the end of the week. I am looking hard on the transfer market for a young Inner Midfielder who is at least passable at playmaking. Again, I hope to track one down for a decent price by the end of the week. Two players were pulled from the youth squad. They were sacked because they were horrible. I have played my first league match, and I have a friendly scheduled against Qwikshot's Qwakers on the 6th. The information form the game just played will be posted shortly. Last edited by Rich1033 : 03-06-2003 at 10:05 AM. |

Scores from games player before I owned the team
As you can see we were formerly called the Gangbangers, and we never scored more than one goal. It seems we were the ones recieving the gangbang rather than giving... Anyway, now we proceed into my teams first real game and hope to see some improvement. Real Andorra C.F. - Toledo Drunkards Date: 3/3/2003 at 01:00 MatchID: 4589017 Arena: The Bracknell Benches Crowd: 7701 7701 spectators arrived at The Bracknell Benches, where weather conditions were pretty good for football. Andorra started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. They fielded: Devereux - Metzger, Peterson, Frost - Lambert, Ahmaoja, Ingram, Kannan, Churchill - Zepeda, Wilde. Drunkards had chosen a strategic 4-3-3 formation. Lineup: Sears - Wallace, Mcmullen, Murray, Dowell - Douglas, Nagendra, Roskvist - Ponce, Robbins, Alonzo. In the 8:th minute cheers broke out as Candrabindu Kannan found his way through the guests central defense line, clipping the 1 - 0 goal in for Andorra. The referee showed Andorras Sammy Frost the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. In the 11th minute Andorra put themselves up 2 - 0. The visitors defenders lost the ball to Mark Wilde coming up from the left, who proceeded to cooly round the goaltender and knock the ball home. Seemingly due to lack of experience, Heikki Ahmaoja needlessly tripped an opponent just outside the penalty area, but the free kick that followed didn't succeed. Andorra put their lead ahead another goal as Doug Zepeda struck home the 3 - 0 goal, after an attack from the left setting him up unmarked with the keeper. A bit later Drunkards´s Charles Ponce easily reduced to 3 - 1 after a misunderstanding in the home sides central defense line. After 33 minutes Steven Robbins made a speedy advance and dropped the ball to Bryan Alonzo who shuffled the ball past the keeper. The score was now 3 - 2. Drunkards´s Michael Murray refused to leave the field after injuring his achilles tendon in the 37:th minute. 3 - 2 was the half-time score. Andorra held the ball, with a clear 80 percent possession rate. After 49 minutes Mark Wilde put Andorra ahead 4 - 2 as he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Drunkards had obvious problems in finding their positions. After 67 minutes Doug Zepeda put Andorra ahead 5 - 2 as he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Andorra held the ball, with a clear 94 percent possession rate. Andorra´s best player was David Devereux. Edwin Metzger was a disappointment, however. The most dominating Drunkards player was without a doubt Ellis Mcmullen. Giriksita Nagendra on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 5 - 2. Now we did do better than any other match so far. However I am not happy. We will need a win and I am really hoping to pull one out in next weeks league match. In the mean time I will work up a lineup for my B team and give them a chance to play in a friendly against Qwikshot's Qwakers. I see a couple mid infielders who are on the transfer market until 3/5. I will put in a some bids and hope to get one. Thats it for now. I just want to thank everyone again for reading and taking time out to give comments and advice. |

Ok, checked out match report. Your problem can be summed up in one phrase: "Midfield: disastrous" to his weak midfield otherwise you would have played him even. Btw, you played a misleadingly good 7th place team so don't feel too bad. He'll challenge for your division next year if he can get rid of those two *~'s.
Anyways, Negendra and Douglas aren't the answer in the middle especially Negendra, who is nothing more than your best sub now. BTW, you actually ran a 3-3-4 not a 3-4-3 since you moved one of your wingers up. That hurt your midfield some. You should move one of your middle defenders up instead of a winger since you now have 2 passable wingers. If you can dig up a middle infielder or two, it would really help your cause. SI

SI- Thanks, I saw that grade for my Midfield. Honestly I had a good idea that is was coming because I spent a long time trying to figure out how to make it at least decent with the players I had. Obviously, I couldnt come up with anything. I do think I have a better handle on the concept now. I have a new idea I will be trying in my friendly and league match coming up. We will see how that works out.
I have decided on a strategy. I have been looking over the transfer market for players 17-19 with inadequate ratings in key stats. With building for next year as my key mission, I want to train these players and hopefully get them to passable. If I can pick up a cheap young player with a passable or 2, then all the better. I have already picked up a couple and I will post them tomorrow after the results from my match. My search for a inner midfielder continues on. I found one player with passable ratings in Defending, scoring and playmaking who I thought I would be able to get. As the bidding closed he jumped to over 100,000 grand and I was forced to drop out. |

Rich, friendly revenue is split 50-50. You may be better off going on the road to someone with a larger fan base, thus getting more income.

Ok, I will have the results from my match up very soon. First I will post my new team because of the many changes that were made. Note that some players are noted to be on the transfer market. All have an asking price of $0 and some will be cut if no bids are made. I am thinking of going back and editing out my old rosters to help reduce load times for people(like myself) with dialup connections.

It seems I would be best to pick scoring right now. Does anyone agree or disagree? I see Scoring, Playmaking, Winger and maybe passing as my options. Will anyone improve if I keep training on general? I obviously have to improve the form of some of my players. I have read is is mostly random as long as they play. Does anyone know of any tricks to help the process along? |

New decision of note-
Im thinking I should list my older players on the transfer market. I guess there is just nothing for me to gain by keeping them. Any suggestions for what price I should start McMullen, Ponce and Dowell at? Should I sell my Keeper (Spears) and then try to buy an Inad keeper with the money? He is 27 right now. Again I know Im asking a lot of questions, but thanks again for all the advice. |

Qwakers started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. They fielded: Paulsson - Laizans, Linnus, Batten - Tully, Teufl, Tuito, Gretcu, Erwin - Alvarado, Harris. Drunkards had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. The following players had been chosen: Holcomb - Everett, Darnell, Cadalso - Stere, Morrison, Dowell, Pérez Raposo, Seal - López, Baraja. The 1st minute saw the home team take a 1 - 0 lead after a leak in the visitors right side defense. Scorer for Qwakers was Igal Tuito. Manuel Pérez Raposo of Drunkards received a yellow card in the 6:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. In the games 6:th minute Manuel Pérez Raposo scored on a free kick changing direction on the away teams defensive formation, the goalie completely without a chance to save. Drunkards had evened the score to 1 - 1. In the 18:th minute the home side managed to get a 2 - 1 lead as Jordan Erwin flipped the ball after a cross pass from the right. Things were going to get worse for the visitors. Todd Alvarado squirmed himself through the central defense line in the 25:th minute, asserting the lead to 3 - 1. The teams went for a half-time break at 3 - 1. Qwakers held the ball, with a clear 67 percent possession rate. In the 64:th minute Drunkardss Neil Everett received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. Igal Tuito of Qwakers received a yellow card in the 66:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Things were going to get worse for the visitors. Todd Alvarado squirmed himself through the central defense line in the 66:th minute, asserting the lead to 4 - 1. When Igal Tuito made yet another studs first tackle, in the games 72th minute, the referee was obliged to book the Qwakers player for the second time, sending him off the pitch. Due to a severely mistimed tackle, David Israel López spent some on the grass writhing in agony before he could get up and continue the game. A speedy charge from the left side of the field put Qwakers lead up with 5 - 1. Louis Harris finished that one off competently, firing from an acute angle. By now Qwakers were drawing the troops back in order to defend their lead. Drunkards appeared unsure on how to play. Qwakers, bringing the final ball possession rate to 75 percent, dominated the battle. The most dominating Qwakers player was without a doubt Louis Harris. Jordan Erwin on the other hand, had a terrible day. Drunkards´s best player was Pau Cadalso. Shannon Morrison on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 5 - 1. ________________________________ My young B team suited up for this match as I tried a new formation. In the end they disappointed me. I was expecting to play a little better, but I can probably lay most of the blame on myself for not setting up the tactics correctly. However I will learn from this and be back better than ever next time. For my next league game I will post the Lineup I plan on using and maybe someone can point out the weeknesses. I have been reading the ABC's of Tactics whick was recommended previously by Alf. Using that I think I can come up with something that will make me more competitive. I will try to post what I come up with today or tomorrow. Last edited by Rich1033 : 03-06-2003 at 10:43 AM. |

This is what I did....I sold every player on my team older than 27, and I got a bunch of younger players...I personally like my team better now, because they are mostly 'my guys'. And if there is nothing you can do this season then going much younger is probably a good idea, but you might want to wait and get conformation from a more seasoned vet since I have only had hattrick for 2 weeks now. Edit: sterlingice I have noticed that you have helped a few people out with setting up there best rosters, if I post mine could you help me out? I really need to get a win this sunday, if I do I will likely finish in 3rd place for the season, and if I am not mistaken I get money for that. Last edited by Doug5984 : 03-06-2003 at 11:16 AM. |

I've actually had Hattrick for only about half that long, so I'm no expert, but someone suggested something rather interesting to me while I was trying to sign one of his players. He pointed out that as long as they aren't in decline, there is no difference between a young player you aren't training and an older player, and that the older player is usually cheaper. |

Sure, I'd be more than happy to. I can help you choose a lineup to try and win with. Also, as Alf pointed out, http://www.mybestteam.tk/ is a lineup's best friend. But I suppose you need a good formation to put them in Have you made any changes to your team since the above roster? SI

McSweeney- LOL, sorry about that. I did fight for a couple people at the last second yesterday. I work nights, so I just happen to be sitting here doing nothing while everyone else is at school or work. However I am done now. I really need to save some money.

Im having a hell of a time figuring out a lineup. The only standout players are at Central defender and Forward. I do know that I will go with 3 forwards(Ponce, Alonzo, and probably Pendleton over Robbins). What I really need is a way to cover up my midfield problems as best as possible.
Any tips or suggestions are encouraged! Tomorrow I will post the best plan I can think of. Last edited by Rich1033 : 03-06-2003 at 12:58 PM. |

Here's a lineup, but it's just for next week. My notes for the future are further up but trying to win now is definately different than winning later. Wait, this isn't even your thread. Might want to start another one so Rich isn't so threadjacked.
You need some help: This is going to mostly be smoke and mirrors as there is a significant lack of talent. GK: Glenn - best form with similar skills. DW: Stubblefield - inad/pass is pretty good for a defensive winger DM: Rowell - passable defense is all you need DM: Prince - ditto DW: Holden - i can't say much good about him but solid/sympathetic makes a good clown and he's inad/weak. However, it's better to run him out there than an inad playmaker WI: Moon (offensive) - put that passing to good work MI: Quigley- hope that upredictable is good instead of bad this game MI: Peckerman (off) - he has such an awesome name: " Godofredo Peckerman"; play him offensively to take advantage of that passing MI: WI: Hightower (off) - only inad winger but the passing is nice and he would make a good set pieces guy FO: Aguilera - passable/weak isn't bad even with the bad stamina FO: Bergeron - inad/passable in key categories Set Pieces: Hightower SI

lol, well getting back to my dynasty...
Here is what Im thinking for my lineup. GK- Spears CD- Mcmullen, Cadalso WB- Dowell(towards middle), Nagendra WI- Thomas Seal, Roskvist MI- Ken Wallace(Maybe set as Defensive?) FO- Alonzo, Ponce, Pendleton Subs- Garrison(def), Douglas(IM), Robbins(forward), Stere(winger) If I am doing something foolish with this lineup please point it out to me. My problem is trying to protect my middle and try to keep possesion of the ball above 20%. If I could turn up a better Middie I would like to put Wallace next to Seal on the wing. My team will be playing as if this is the match of the season. With only 2 league matches left I need some players to show me something. Sterlingice- I used your past recommendations when I made up this lineup, but I did make a few changes based on players that I have added. Any thoughts on whether the changes were good or bad? Any pariticular reason for the 4-3-3 ? Are you training scoring? (Sorry if I missed it).
I only asked because of this: Ken Wallace Stamina: wretched You're going to get killed in midfield if he's the only inner middie. Maybe set both wingers to play middle? I don't know, just throwing out ideas, but don't fret too much about the early results, they tend to be ugly.

dacman- Well I have 2 forwards with solid scoring, and 2 with passable. Thats pretty much the reason for the 4-3-3. I would go with ardent's run and shoot, but I have no midfield yet. Im thinking I can score some goals while having a decent D if I stay with the 4-3-3 for the moment
Yes I am training scoring right now. I have a few young guys with inad for scoring, and Pendleton(17) with a passable. I keep thinking to changing it to playmaking, but I dont know if it will help me as much. As for Wallace, yes I know. I put him up for transfer yesterday and Im hoping someone will look past his stamina and buy him. Stamina is another problem I am facing with a lot of the players I started off with. Notice that Nagendra is the same way. Would you suggest playing someone with worse ratings but better stamina? Also would switching Dowell and Wallace help? It would be nice if Hattrick gave you an option of when the subs will come into the game. That might help me out with the stamina problems. |

What happens to team spirit during the offseason? Does it reset to some level, or does it stay where it was at the end of the season? Also, does PiCing friendlies have any effect? |

Playing MotS will just ruin your team spirit that much more for next season (unless it's reset at season break- I don't know, you'd have to ask someone who has played longer than I have).
Let me put this as nicely as possible: You're going to lose this week. The guy you are playing gets 24-25 *'s per game whereas you only got 20 this past week. Not only that but his midfield is going to eat yours alive and you probably won't see the ball much as he'll dominate possession. That said, he has a great team for division V. You want a barometer and are set on MotS'ing, do it the last game of the season against the Rebels. Sure, in 3rd, but they don't have that ungodly differential, you're at home, and only get 22-23 *'s per game. As for your lineup, time to take a closer look: GK- Sears is a no brainer DW - Dowell makes sense at inad/pass with ** last game. Don't play him towards the middle or you lessen the effect of that passable winger stat. Negendra is inad/inad but that disas stamina is cause for a lot of concern. I still think he's better suited for winger but inad/inad gets ** at defense, tho his stamina will probably drop that to *~. You might want to play him offensively to take advantage of his passing and playmaking but it would likely be counteracted by his bad stamina. DM - Can't argue at all at these picks. They should get you **'s and McMullen will probably get you **~ when you get his stamina up WI - Roskovit did you well last game and Seal looks like a good pickup MI - Wallace, and while defensive is his forte, with only 1 middie, you're going to be weakening your midfield even more. You desperately need to get a second, possibly solid playmaker for formation reason, if nothing else (see below). FO - Your passing could use some work but you can't argue with the quality of the scorers you have. In general, your guys really need to hit the track and do some stamina training. It's perfect for you that the offseason is coming up so you can get your boys in shape without worrying too much about form hits. NOTE: Playing a 3-3-4, as you are, is not a valid formation. You will always be confused and your experience at it will be disastrous which leads to confusion on the field. I suggest a 3-4-3 since you are selling Negendra. In the future, just play McMullen on the wing and play him towards the middle so he isn't penalized so much for his lack of winger ability. Then move one of your middle defender spots to forward and you have a 3-4-3 which is great for an offensive team. You should get 21-22 *'s which won't beat the team you are playing this week but it might get you a win next week if you MotS. Then again, a guy or two will likely be gone so I dunno. As for the future, here are your trainable players, essentially: Scoring: Alonzo (tho a touch old), Pendleton Winger: Roskovit, Stere, Seal (but winger doesn't make much money so you cant build off of it very well) Playmaking: Wallace (old?), Baraja (only inad, but young) Defense: Wallace (old?), Darnell (only inad, but young) I would suggest starting with scoring since you have two guys, one at passable and one at solid. Then again, it's a dangerous game because you *must* have a good midfield to win so you have to buy good middies and use your forwards to fund that. You can't just start with inads at middie and hope to build an economy, you need to start with your strengths, at least until you get your youth squad up and running at passable. SI

As for the offseason, I don't know. I've never been through an offseason but I believe I was told that it doesn't so the ideal is to train stamina 2 weeks and then genral to help your form out.

Rich, long term I think your best bet is to sell Alonzo for as much as you can get and use that money to build a better midfield. You may want to wait until after the offseason if/when you can bump up his stamina and form.
sterling -- where are you seeing him playing a 3-3-4? I see 4 def, 3 middies, 3 forwards. 4-3-3 is most definately a legal formation. I think HFP or DataKing posted somewhere that team spirit is reset at some point between seasons.

In between seasons, most psychological effects are "wiped", putting the teams psychological status back to "normal".
That's from the Hattrick rules pages.

Team spirit, team confidence, supporter attitude, and sponsor attitude all reset during the off-season (right after qualification matches, if memory serves).
There's really no reason to not MOTS the last match of the season, unless you have a qualification match coming up or an important friendly match.

Oops, yeah my bad. That's what I get for rushing through stuff between classes at the library. 3-3-4 is a legal formation. I would worry a lot about playing that, tho, as most teams play a 3-5-2 and with the emphasis in hattrick on midfield, playing only 1 middie will spell death to your possession percentage and you chance of winning. As further encouragement I will relate my recent transfers: I picked up 6 middies with inad ratings in all key categories (2 wingers, 4 inner middies) for a grand total of $52,000.
Don't know if that's good/bad/par for the course, but it does give you some idea of what's out there. (In otherwords, don't settle for weak).

I've gotten some great bargains, too:
A pair of under 20 ** wingbacks (inad/inad) for $1K and $7K (the latter is inad and weak in all 5 major categories along with passable stamina) . A 19yo passable playmaker, inad winger for $16K (he needs some work, tho- only a *~ guy). A 20yo inad playmaking, scoring, and defending trainee for $1K. A 20yo passable scoring, weak passing forward with solid stamina for only $16K. The bargains are out there, you just have to know where (the smaller markets like Romania, Canada, Oceania, etc) and when (Tuesday-Wednesday when the youth pull blitz hits) and you can get some great deals. Right there is half a trainee squad for only $41K. Another $13K if you include my backup inad goalie who is 19yo. SI

Well I thought someone out there might be interested in an update of how my team is doing.
My last 2 games of the season where a disaster. I lost 6-1 and 6-0. As an angry GM it was time to tear apart and rebuild. Even though I had little money left in the bank and was not able to support the budget I was already on, I came out of the process happy. My team is much stronger and should be on top of the division next season and I have some good young players who should be able to make me some money in the future. My first match with the retooled team was a friendly which I won 2-0. The lineup that I intend to go with is the strong 3-5-2. To give everyone an idea of how much my team has changed I will give you a overview of my starters and my key subs. Keeper: My only remaining player form the original team is Kev Spears. He is 27 years young, passable form, passable keeper valued at $154,000. He has been injured for the last 5 weeks and should return next week. Central Defenders: Newly added Per Henriksson is 27 years old with passable form. He can do it all as he doesnt have any rating below weak. Most importantly he has passable defending and inads at Passing, playmaking, and scoring. He also is incharge of set pieces with his solid rating. If I can improve his stamina from weak he could also be used as a defensive middie. His value is at $88,000. - My other starting central defender is 18 year old Pau Cadalso. He was one of the first players picked up from the transfer market and he has gotten 2* preformances ever since. He has inad stamina and passable defending. Everything else is at poor. Pau has passable form and is valued at $21,000 Wing Back: Reg Matson is a new addition to my club and is one of my favorites. He is 22 with solid form and valued at $106,000. He has passable defending, and passable winger ratings. Complimenting that are inads at stamina and passing with weak playmaking. Reg will mostly be played as defensive. I dont have another guy that I would want at wing back, so for now I will use that position to move to an extra midfielder. Inner Midfield: My best would probably be newly added Stefan Dyrhult. He has just moved up to excellent form and he also has excellent stamina The 23 year old is valued at $106,000 and has passable playmaking, inad scoring, weak passing and is poor everywhere else. Hopefully he can play well and help answer some of the questions about my midfield. - Along side him is 18 year old Björn Hansson. He has Solid form to go along with passable playmaking, inad scoring, and weak everything else. The main problem with him is his poor stamina which needs to be improved. Hopefully he will be able to do ok right now since I am not ready to train stamina yet. Bjorn's value is at $63,000. - Joining them is a young player who will probably become a forward after his scoring trains up. 17 year old Nick Godbom has excellent form, passable stamina, and inads at playmaking and scoring. He is also a weak passer with poors in the other categories. Nick is valued at $39,000 and could be trained into something special over time. Winger: Carl Rovelt is an interesting player. We are now positive how to use him yet, but I believe he can be very valuable to me somehow. He is an 18 year old with solid form but poor stamina. Carl is a passable winger and has inads at defending and scoring. He has weak passing, but also has wretched playmaking which worries me. For now he will play as a defensive winger because of that. He is valued at $71,000. - On the other wing is veteran Dan Andreasson. Dan is our leader by far with passable experience and passable leadership. He is 34 years young with excellent stamina and a passable winger rating. Secondary ratings like playmaking and defending are at inadequate and he has weak scoring. His big problem is disasterous passing. He has not played a game yet, but Im hoping he will be able to overcome that. Dan's value is $25,000. Forward: Sami Heiramo is my best forward valued at $77,000. He is 19 with passable form and ]passable scoring. Adding to his good scoring is his inad playmaking, passing and stamina. Rounding out Sami's ratings is weak winger and poor defending. We are really counting on him to come up with some scores and to set up other players. My other forward spot is taken by one of 3 players. - Keenen Pendalton is 17 with passable scoring and was my best player for most of last season. However his form has dropped to inadeqaute so he will not start the next game. His value is at $34,000. - Getting the shot to prove himself is David Israel López. He is 18 with solid form, but only an inad at scoring. However his secondary stats are better then Keenen. David has solid stamina, inad passing and weak playmaking. We wll see how he preforms before I give him the spot on the A team for good. His value is $40,000 - Mikel Baraja is a long way away form having a chance to play on the A team, but he is talented. He is a passable scorer, with inads at playmaking and defense. His poor passing is not nearly as big of a problem as the laziness. This out of shape bastard has wretched stamina which will keep him out of any meaningful games I have. Its sad to watch his dominate a game for the first 5 minutes and then pass out at the 10 minute mark. Im just hoping I can get him to a solid scorer before Im forced to sell him. Mikel's value is $40,000. Key sub: Darren Vail is a 29 year old who is one of 2 players whos weak form will keep him fom starting right now. He has solid playmaking and passable defending. Everything else, including stamina, is rated poor. I would love to use him as a middie or a defender but until the form improves he will stick to playing friendlies. Darren is worth $42,000. - Thomas Seal is another who would start if it wasnt for his weak form. As a passable winger with inad stamina, scoring and defending he could be a force. His weaknesses are weak playmaking and wretched passing. Thomas is only 19 and should improve over time. He is worth $38,000. That is my lineup for the 3-5-2 which I plan on running the most. Rovelt and Matson will be set to play a defensive game, while Dyrhult and Godbom will concentrate on the offensive side. ____________________________________________ My biggest problem right now is my debt. Im not making enough money to cover my expenses, and Im will be about 150 grand in the red after next weak. Im just hoping right now that I can make it until some player's scoring trains up so they can be sold. AAll my starters will be out there for my cup game on thursday. I will post my match report to keep you updated on how they preform. As always comments are welcome. Last edited by Rich1033 : 03-31-2003 at 03:19 AM. |

WooHoo! I just checked the results of my first cup game and I couldnt be more happy. Here is the game log...
New Orleans Gurus - Toledo Drunkards 0 - 4 Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 4169 to New Orleans Emporium. Orleans had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. They fielded: Cordova - Palmer, Alley, Matson, Barkley - Mcdonald, Stein, Kern, Winkler - Carmona, Hyun-Gi. Drunkards had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. The following players had been chosen: Sears - Henriksson, Cadalso, Matson - Rovelt, Dyrhult, Hansson, Godbom, Andreasson - Heiramo, López. After 13 minutes Drunkardss Stefan Dyrhult made his way through the middle, putting the visitors up 0 - 1. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Orleans´s Ed Matson got himself booked. After 20 minutes Orleans´s Chen Hyun-Gi contracted a slight foot injury, but could finish the game. Man, what a shot by Stefan Dyrhult! Firing from 35 yards he didn't give the enemy goalie a chance and it was 0 - 2. After this Drunkards lowered the tempo in order to concentrate on their defensive efforts. The teams went for a half-time break at 0 - 2. Drunkards held the ball, with a clear 79 percent possession rate. In the 53rd minute the visitors put themselves ahead 0 - 3 as Stefan Dyrhult finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick. This third goal made a hat trick for Stefan Dyrhult. Drunkards´s Sami Heiramo received a play slashing through the home side´s defense in the 62nd minute, chipping it past the keeper scoring 0 - 4. The home crowd was not pleased with that one. David Israel López came close to extending the visitors lead as he, completely unmarked in front of the goal, lifted a ball over Hector Cordova, hitting the bar. Reg Matson behaved like an inexperienced youth player in the 64:th minute as he gave the ball away to an opponent. Lucky for him though, there was no goal. Dan Andreasson of Drunkards received a yellow card in the 68:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The fortyfive minutes were dominated by Drunkards, with an impressive 86 percent possession of the ball. Most important Orleans player was Hector Cordova. Ed Matson was a disappointment, however. Drunkards´s best player was Reg Matson. Björn Hansson on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 0 - 4. Toledo Drunkards Midfield: poor Right Side Defence: passable Central Defence: excellent Left Side Defence: formidable Right Side Attack: weak Central Attack: passable Left Side Attack: weak To get an idea of how well my players did everyone got 2 star preformances except 4 players: 1 1/2*- Bjorn Hansson 2 1/2* - Reg Matson Sami Heiramo Stefan Dyrhult This game saw a lot of firsts for my team. I had my first hattrick thanks to Stefan Dyrhult. It was also the first time I have had more than one player recieve more tha 2 stars. My team ratings were also 10x better than they have ever been before. To say I am very excited about this group puts it mildly. My only problem could be my lack of depth, so lets hope I dont get hit by many injuries. Last edited by Rich1033 : 04-03-2003 at 04:11 AM. |

Bad preformance for my first league game of the season. We lose on the road 6-1.
Part of the reason is a couple players were sold. So lets say goodbye to the following... Kev Spears: He was the best player I started out with. A passable keeper who always gave me at least 2*. However at 28 I just couldnt keep him around. He was injured for the last 6 weeks and was just going be fully healed in a week or so. I listed him at $70,000 and hoped that someone would bid him up to $85,000 or so. To my suprise someone bid $100,000 for him the frst day he was listed. Im assuming it was a newbie because I just dont think a 'bruised but playing', passable 28 year old keeper with inad form would have gotten me that much. Anyway it was sad to see Kev go, but the money coming in makes me so much happier. Mikel Baraja: Had wretched stamina that I didnt feel like dealing with, but did have pasable scoring and inad playmaking. He was sold for $42,000. I cant say Im sorry to see him go, although it would have been nice to train him up to a solid scorer. Bjorn Hansson: This is a man I would have liked to keep. He was worth $57,000 and I listed him at $65,000 just to see if I could get someone to bite. Well I did and now I have to be happy with the money. Bjorn had passable playmaking, inad scoring, poor stamina and everything else was rated weak. He is only 18 so he has a lot of potential. I wish him the best as long as I dont ever play him. I have a couple other players up for transfer, all priced high as I continue to be optimistic about the market. We will see how that goes. After adding almost $200,000 in income Im only at $50,000 in the red. However I still need to replace my Keeper. My strategy is to try to get a young passable keepr for less than $85,000. If I cant do that I will settle for a high valued(over $100K) Inad for around 10 or 15K. Coming up is my match report and play ratings. Im also going to go over my plan for the upcoming season, so stay tuned... |

Well I didnt really think I could keep myself out of debt for very long. We will have more on the new blood being injected into my team later. For now I will give you the details from my last match.
Date: 4/7/2003 at 01:00 MatchID: 5542090 Arena: The Bracknell Benches Crowd: 9946 9946 spectators had come to The Bracknell Benches this cloudy day. Andorra tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. The following players had been chosen: Devereux - Graves, Peterson, Frost - Lambert, Ingram, Metzger, Simmons, Churchill - Zepeda, Wilde. Drunkards had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. They fielded: Holcomb - Matson, Cadalso, Vail - Seal, Dyrhult, Henriksson, Godbom, Rovelt - Heiramo, Pendleton. Drunkards took the lead in the games 21st minute with 0 - 1 after some elegant plays down the middle. Keenan Pendleton was the scorer. The referee showed Drunkardss Darren Vail the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. The Andorra player was Gregory Peterson who had to be helped off the pitch, unable to finish the game. Wendell Lambert managed to make an excellent pass from the flank, but Doug Zepeda was not as skillfull in scoring. 1 - 1 was a funny story: the seemingly nonchalant lob from Andorra´s Bradley Churchill landed at the feet of Mark Wilde who sent it into the net - goal! Sammy Frost gave his Andorra the lead with 2 - 1, as he successfully challenged both the guests central defenders, then placed the ball unreachably at the goaltenders right post. After 37 minutes Doug Zepeda put Andorra ahead 3 - 1 as he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Keenan Pendleton of Drunkards received a yellow card in the 39:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Andorra put themselves up 4 - 1 when Edwin Metzger broke through on the right, leaving the entire defensive box behind him. By now Andorra were drawing the troops back in order to defend their lead. Thomas Seal of Drunkards received a yellow card in the 40:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The teams went for a half-time break at 4 - 1. Andorra held the ball, with a clear 59 percent possession rate. After 55 minutes Wendell Lambert put Andorra ahead 5 - 1 as he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. When Keenan Pendleton made yet another studs first tackle, in the games 58th minute, the referee was obliged to book the Drunkards player for the second time, sending him off the pitch. In the 58:th minute of the match the visitors central line of defence had to look on as Edwin Metzger dashed through, knocking home 6 - 1 for Andorra. The fortyfive minutes were dominated by Andorra, with an impressive 65 percent possession of the ball. The most dominating Andorra player was without a doubt Bradley Churchill. However, Garland Fenton made a disastrous appearance. Most important Drunkards player was Reg Matson. However, Ronnie Holcomb made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 6 - 1. The only good note was that Reg Matson recorded my first ever 3 star preformance. Other than that I would prefer not to talk about the game. ____________________________________________________ Ok, coming up next is the long awaited (well that is if anyone is actually still reading this) Mission statement for this season. I have high hopes and what I think is a decent plan to improve this team into a contenda. Now I couldnt actually not spend the $200K I made from selling those 3 players, but wait until you see the additions that the money allowed me to get. |

A mission statement huh? You know, it doesn't qualify unless you use at least three over- or mis-used "buzz-words."
Can you tell I work in the corporate sector?
