NCAA giving refs too much power?

The NCAA has proposed a few new rules that I like such as the concussion precautions, but I'm concerned about their plan to change the rules for a taunting call where it could result in points coming off the board:

Agreed, I really don't like the idea of taking the play away. Frankly, I think they keep taking personality out of the game.

Will look forward to the first official who tries taking points off the board when a guy casually walks into the end zone to kill a few extra seconds.

It’s funny how concerned Bellotti is with the games image now that he isn’t coaching anymore. Hey Mike, does the name Rodney Woods ring a bell? How about Richie Incognito? And I’m sure you had nothing to do with the decision to reinstate LeGarrette Blount.

As for the celebration rule: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a game and thought, "if only the ref’s had more control over the outcome, that would be great!"

I look forward to the day when our Alien Overlords destroy the NCAA.

The NCAA coming up with a colossally stupid idea? This doesn't sound right.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee has proposed changing the taunting rule for the 2011 season, putting forward the proposal that players who break the rule on the way to a touchdown would have the penalty assessed from the spot on the field where the taunting occurred. If the taunting -- or at least what an official considers taunting -- occurs in the end zone after the player has scored, the penalty would continue to be assessed on the extra-point attempt or on the kickoff. Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti is the rules committee chairman, and he said the proposed rule "is just another step in maintaining our game's image and reflecting the ideals of the NCAA overall." The proposal still has to pass muster with the Playing Rules Oversight Panel before it goes into effect. One new rule that will go into effect this fall is that any eye black used by players must be solid and cannot contain words, numbers or symbols. (Presumably that, too, is to reflect "the ideals of the NCAA overall." Actually, if it truly reflected the NCAA ideals, the organization would have looked for a way to monetize the words/symbols/numbers used on the eye black.)

I just wanted to point this little tid bit out for those complaining about it being "all the NCAA's fault." AD's make up a good portion of these committees that propose these rule changes.

I wrongly assumed that this thread was to discuss why Ed Hightower is still officiating basketball games given his declining skills.
