1993 Chicago Bears
Okay after watching the HBO Hard Knocks marathon I have decided to start with my beloved Bears the season after they fired Mike Ditka. I figure this is a good place to start since my least favorite Bear coach took over and the team was pretty bad.
I will follow some of the rookies that were drafted in 1993 through training camp and the regular season. I will try to add a bit of a role playing element with the player weekly practice reports as well as feedback from the coaching staff throughout the season. I am working on some very rough weekly practice charts that take in to effect the players age, draft position if rookie, loyalty, play to win, intelligence and personality. Not quite sure how things will turn out but I am bored right now and have a couple weeks before soccer practice starts. |

The Offense
Here is the current depth chart on offense.
QB Jim Harbaugh QB2 Paul Justin QB3 PT Willis QB4 Shane Mathews - rookie QB5 Will Furer Not a whole lot of strength here so Harbaugh wins by default. There will be a battle for the backup and third QB spot. Mathews has a good chance to make the team as the 3rd QB. RB Neal Anderson RB2 Robert Green RB3 Darren Lewis Anderson is a lock for the starting spot but there is no depth behind him. We will look to add a vet to backup Anderson. Green has the inside track to make the team with Lewis a long shot. FB Craig Heyward FB2 Bob Christian We are definitely more than covered with these two players. Heyward is monster and Christian is a solid backup. FL Tom Waddle FL2 Curtis Conway - rookie SE Wendell Davis SE2 Terry Obee The goal will be to get Waddle and Conway in the lineup as the top two receivers since they are by far our best options. One of these guy will most likely move to the SE with Obee manning the 3rd WR spot. The key will be for the rookie Conway to learn the system in training camp. TE Keith Jennings TE2 Chris Gedney - rookie TE3 Ryan Wetnight - rookie TE4 Danta Whitaker Jennings will be the #1 TE since he is our best blocker. Gedney and Wetnight will battle for the #2 TE spot and Whitaker is just training camp fodder. OG Mark Bortz OG Jay Leeuwenerg OG3 Todd Perry - rookie Bortz is rock on the offensive line but Leeuwenberg will battle to hold off rookie Todd Perry for the second OG position. We will need to add at least another guard during camp to provide some additional competition. OT James Williams OT John Wojo.. OT3 Tory Auzenne OT4 Keith Van Horne Williams is solid at RT and Wojo is below average. Auzenne may push Wojo for the starting LT spot but neither player is a good option to protect Harbaugh. C Jerry Fontenot C2 Gene Mcguire Fontenot is a rock and McGuire will only see the field if Fontenot gets hurt. |

The Defense
DE Richard Dent
DE Trace Armstrong DE3 Alonzo Spellman DE4 Tim Ryan DE5 Al Fontenot - rookie We are pretty set here with Dent a monster even after 11 years. Fourth round pick faces an uphill battle to make the team. DT Chris Zorich DT Carl Simpson - rookie DT3 Steve McMichael DT4 Tory Epps Zorich is a star and Simpson is a slotted to start because McMichael is old and Epps is bad. We will need to strengthen this position and will definitely bring in some competition. WLB Joe Cain WLB2 Percy Snow MLB Dante Jones MLB2 Jim Schwantz MLB3 Mike Stonebreaker SLB Barry Minter - rookie SLB Ron Cox SLB Vinson Smith Our starters are pretty average and our backup are about the same. This is not a strength like you would expect from a Bears team. The rookie Minter should develop in to a long term starter at SLB. CB Donnell Woolford CB John Mangum CB3 Kevin Minniefield - rookie CB4 Jeremy Lincoln CB5 Maurice Douglass CB6 Anthony Blalock CB7 Keshon Johnson - rookie Woolford is a stud and Mangum is adequate. The rookie Minniefield will begin the team as the nickel back. Rookie Keshon Johnson has very little chance of making the team. The backups CBs are all pretty average. S Mark Carrier S Shaun Gayle We are very thin at safety with only two safeties starting in camp. We will need to bring in some additional safeties to provide some camp fodder and competition. Special Teams
K Kevin Buter
P Chris Gardocki Gunner Kevin Minniefield - rookie Gunner Bob Christian KR Darren Lewis KR Terry Obee PR Donnell Woolford PR Curtis Conway - rookie Long Snapper - Ryan Wetnight - rookie We are solid with our kickers. The gunners should be decent with rookie Minniefield contributing on special teams. Our kick returners are very weak and will need to be upgraded. We are strong at the punt returner position as well. |

Pre-Camp Signings
Well our roster is at 55 players and we need to add some players for training camp to push players in some areas and just to add depth in other areas. We are $12 million under the cap so we have plenty of room. Here are our signings:
SS Alfred Goodspeed - rookie who should make the team as a backup safety RB Mark Logan - a vet to backup Anderson SE Steve Tasker - WR depth as well as a decent kick and punt returner FS Alton Montomery - training camp depth SE AJ Sharver - rookie WR depth Looks like these are the guys we will go to camp with. |

Exhibition Wk 1 Rookie Report
WR Curtis Conway - A very good week of practice for Curtis who is doing everything right and pushing for a starting spot.
DT Carl Simpson - Carl did nothing spectacular and is definitely a bit overwhelmed at the speed of the NFL game. TE Chris Gedney - A decent week of practice for Gedney who is understanding the blocking but having a hard time with the route running. OG Todd Perry - The 4th round pick struggled all week and was constantly allow his to make tackles and pressure the QB. DE Al Fontenot - A horrible week of practice for Fontenot who seems lost and was constantly dominated by offensive line. CB Keshon Johnson - Did a decent job on special teams drills but is definitely very raw with his coverage skills. QB Shane Mathews - A very good week of practice as Mathews appears to be absorbing the playbook and making all of the right calls. His throw were okay and are definitely his shortcoming. TE Ryan Wetnight - A tough week of practice for Wetnight where the only thing he did right was his long snapping. Wetnight is a distant 3rd on the depth chart. LB Barry Minter - Minter seems to be thinking too much rather than reacting to plays. Not a terrible week but he definitely needs to spend more time hitting the playbooks. DB Kevin Minniefield - Great week on special teams and lost in coverage. SE AJ Sharver - Lost on the offense and dropped way too many balls. He has a long way to go to make the team. SS Alfred Goodspeed - Good week all around on special teams and as the starting SS. |

Coaching Staff
I completely forgot to introduce the coaching staff.
Head Coach - Desmond Flemons - 5yr Contract Desmond is 64 and is a very strict disciplinarian. He is very good at motivating his players and leans more toward the offensive side of the ball. Coach Flemons is great with younger players and stresses fitness with his players. Offensive Coordinator -A.J. Foster - 4 yr Contract A.J. is great with younger players and relates very well with QBs and wide receivers. Defensive Coordinator - Troy Prior 4 yr Contract A good coach who is great with linebackers and younger players. Prior is a little weak with defensive lineman. Head Scout - Irv Farias 3 yr Contract Irv specializes in recognizing talent at QB and RB. Farias had a very good eye with young talent and specializes in the secondary on the defensive side of the ball. |

Exhibition Week 2 - Practice Results
WR Curtis Conway - A great week of practice that Conway did everything right. He seems to be picking up everything as if he is a vet instead of a rookie. Conway will get the start at SE.
DT Carl Simpson - A down week for Simpson who is constantly getting pushed around and seems to be overwhelmed at the NFL level. TE Chris Gedney - Another solid week for Gedney who continues to solidify his hold on the #2 TE spot. His blocking is way ahead of his catching right now. OG Todd Perry - A complete turnaround for Perry who seems to be catching on. He started to hold his own about midweek and could see some significant playing time in the first exhibition game. DE Al Fontenot - A better week of practice for Fontenot. He is starting to show flashes of why he was drafted in the 4th round. CB Keshon Johnson - A dreadful week of practice where nothing went right. Johnson is a long shot to make it to the next week of practice. QB Shane Mathews - Another good week for Shane who has shown he may not have a great arm but he is able to make the right reads. TE Ryan Wetnight - A much better week for Wetnight whose blocking dramatically improved and he showed that his hands are not bad. LB Barry Minter - A good week of practice who saw Minter using his natural ability to read and react rather than thinking too much. Solidified his hold on the starting SLB spot. DB Kevin Minniefield - Not a good week of coverage again for Minniefield who may be losing his grip in the nickel spot. SE AJ Sharver - A better week receiving for Sharver who will be hard pressed to make the practice squad if he does not show some special teams skills. SS Alfred Goodspeed - Great week of practice at SS as Goodspeed is showing why that he may truly be the answer at SS when the season starts. His return skills shined through in practice as well. |
