Baseball Mogul 2009 ($2 Thursday)

Not quite the giveaway of before but Clay is selling last year's version for $2 on Thursday. It doesn't say when exactly it starts but it ends once they hit 1000 sales.

This is last year's version of Mogul (2009). This year's version (2010) is due out soon so this is an interesting way to drum up business. You have to give Clay credit for trying something different.

Here's more about it:
Quote:
You may have noticed on the front page of www.sportsmogul.com that we are giving away Baseball Mogul 2009 for free. For one day only.

We haven't gone crazy. We have switched to a new server and we need to be sure that it can handle the traffic we will get when we start selling Baseball Mogul 2010.

Also, one of the ways to get people interested in Baseball Mogul 2010 is to give Baseball Mogul 2009 to people who wouldn't otherwise buy it.

If you bought the game for $19.99 yesterday, we do appreciate your business, but that's just the way things happen. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you don't. If we had announced this ahead of time, it would have messed up our ability to gradually ramp up the new servers.

So, tell your friends. It might last for an hour. It might last for 12 hours. When the server gets overloaded (or we give away enough downloads to feel confident about our new system) we will shut this down without warning.

Downloading now. I haven't played this series in almost a decade (whenever OOTP 4 came out) so it'll be interesting.

Thanks for this and smart move by Clay IMO. Good way to draw some more eyes to BM and for more people to give it a shot than otherwise would, given that I'd argue it's in third place among the Big 3 of OOTP, PS/DDS:BB and BM right now.

Haven't played it in a few years, but I'll give it another shot. The last few times I've played, it's seemed largely unchanged, at least externally. I'm willing to take a free 'risk' on this time being different.

Depends on what you're measuring. If sales is the metric Clay wins hands down.

Yep, good move by Clay. I've only ever tried the demos as I'm an avid OOTP player but this is too good to pass up. I think I'll try a historical game starting around 1967 and then see how expansion goes.

Also shared the link with my son who has tried OOTP but I think would like something a little easier to get into that he can use on his laptop. So Clay may find a new customer there.

Thanks 21C for sharing the info.

Mogul was my game of choice before I switched to OOTP. So I'm all over it. There isn't enough depth to keep me playing it anymore, but...I do like that he's been plugging along over there for years, churning out a game that's accessible and that his fans seem to be fine with.

I think Clay has done this each of the last couple years right before the new version is released. It's a great way of conducting business. I think if OOTP did something like this it could be fantastic marketing for the new version...

I'd keep the EXE file on your Macbook for a little while. There are ways to play the game in OS X despite the fact that it's a Windows game. I'm using CrossOver Games to play it but you could play the game using any Virtual OS software. I'm just messing around with the game so far but it looks like everything works.

I'm noticing right off how you can only negotiate with people who are pending actual free agency. Folks coming up on arbitration you can't, at least not at the start of a career. Will have to see if that changes.

The link isn't working. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I tried emailing Clay. I'm going to refresh the page every 10 seconds until I can start downloading.

Can't wait to play a free game!

One season into a career and it's not bad. It sims fast compared to OOTP. I like the "sim until _____ has recovered from injury" option. It would be nice if the game showed players' overall ratings on the free agent screen instead of having to go through the entire list. Is there a way to fix it so playoff games don't immediately go into that play by play screen?

I managed to win 100 games with the 2008 Braves which was pretty awesome.

I started a career in 1984 and took over the Cubs. About a week into the season, out of nowhere St. Louis offered me Ozzie Smith for Ron Cey, Tim Stoddard, and Darrin Jackson. I obviously said yes (Cey is 36, Stoddard is... mediocre to put it nicely, and Jackson is a prospect with average at best potential). Hooray for Smith and Sandberg in the same infield.

1984 was the year that St Louis called up Terry Pendleton. He's sitting in AAA looking like a good, solid prospect, and the Cardinals have absolutely no one worth a damn that can play SS, so giving up Ozzie for Cey + scraps... yeah, not so good.

I like the option where you can start play with an expansion team when they joined the league - I have played through half a season with the 1969 Royals so far.

I downloaded and played it for about 15 minutes last night. I have been thinking about jumping back into OOTP when 10 comes out. I've been thinking about a big huge league idea for 10, but I think this 15 minutes with BM showed me that I'm not interested in text sims any longer.

I still don't understand why BM doesn't arrange its box score stats in the traditional order. It's extremely disorienting.

yeah? got any thoughts for me on what settings i should use to make trading most realistic? That (and financials) are the things that aggrivate me most. Well that and the whole "budgeting thing". But I can usually self-edit financials every few years if I have to, and i cheat and set my scouting where I want it to be (although more and more I find myself using stats).

I would like to be able to create a small fictional universe. Is that possible/easy in BM 09? Are there universe files available for download somewhere? (I tried google and got nowhere). I also tried deleting a whole bunch of teams and using the League Editor to make a small fictional universe but I didn't really seem to have any success adding teams. A little help with this would go a long way towards me actually liking this game.

Man, as much grief as I gave OOTP for their interface change, it's shocking how far ahead the vast majority of text sims are in design compared to Baseball Mogul now.

Both leagues' standings not on the same screen? Annoying.

No fast and easy way to compare ratings in different areas in the lineup and pitching screen? The biggest reason why my interest in this game has dropped to zero.

The first one is liveable, as it's only a minor annoyance.

The second one, though, is the death knell. It drags the pace of the game -way- down and when you can't sort by position or overall rating, as you can in FOF, it just makes it an even bigger hassle.

The other difference between FOF and BM in that arena: Looking at the player card in FOF makes it easy to get a fast look at a player's relative strengths and weaknesses via the bars (something I wish OOTP would go back to).

In BM? Scrunched together numbers in an absurdly tiny box.

Baseball Mogul is like the girl who was really pretty back in middle school or high school, but has been completely surpassed in college and adulthood by those girls (games) who were able to change and improve, while she stayed the same.

I enjoyed 2009, and would recommend it to anyone. Certainly is worth $2!!!

It's not OOTP, but I use it as my speed sim (usually 1 year per evening) vs. OOTP which I play a lot slower (1-2 months to sim a season).

Also picked it up just to check it out (I haven't played it since the early days).

If I start a franchise with this version, if I end up upgrading to 2010, will I be able to convert it?

Picked my copy up this morning. A no-brainer at $2.

Philliesfan: I've been able to migrate from older versions to newer ones and I would expect 2009 -> 2010 to be no different. But you might want to check sportsmogul.com to be sure.
