You Have To Give Mogul Credit For This!
Clay at Sports Mogul has released last year's version of Baseball Mogul as a free download. Not the demo or a trial version but the full version. That's Baseball Mogul 2006 - see here for more.
I think that's a pretty brave marketing move on his part. Mogul 2007 has only been out for a couple of months and he makes the previous version freeware. I don't know if it will cannibalize sales or is a brilliant move. I'm sure he's counting on getting some people to update to the current version by doing this. I say kudos to him. I hope it pays off. |

Thanks for the link. I can probably look past some of the flaws since it is free.

I'm thinking the net cost equation works out like this, for me:
$0.00 monetary cost of game + some amount of my time to download and install + several hours of my time to actually play and discover the problems ------------------------------------------------------------------- = game still costs too much Last edited by QuikSand : 06-07-2006 at 09:28 AM. |

I enjoyed last year's Mogul and I was a paying customer. It has plenty of warts, but they aren't the sort that really distracted away from what the game does well. Sure, you still don't have L/R splits. And it can be pretty easy to win (albeit that isn't that different than FOF without house rules). And there are some other AI problems here and there. But it offers a streamlined interface (maybe the best of any sports sim), quick simming, and it can be pretty absorbing. Do I play it anymore? No. But it was definitely fun for a couple of months.

Well I've never even tried a Mogul game so I'll give it a spin.

The limited amount of 2006 I played made me think that it would be a game I would love, if it just worked a bit better. Unlike OOTP 6, for instance, I actually enjoyed playing it for starters. The interface and sim speed are both top notch.

Well, if I remember right the game actually does keep L/R splits for stats, but the only way to implement a platoon is manually on a regular basis. As a result, Mogul players pretty much set one lineup and that's it. In some ways that makes the game easier (rather than OOTP's lineup configuration), but it is definitely less realistic. It has been a shortcoming of every Mogul iteration. I wish it were otherwise, but in a strange way it does help the game move along at a quicker pace (which is one of the biggest strengths of the game).

Mogul gets such an undeserved bad rap around here. I bought 2K6 for ($19.99, yep no one paid $30 for it) and got more than enough use out of it at the time.
2K7 is a huge leap over last years version and has been given steller updates and communication from Clay since it was released. Again, at $19 I've gotten plently of play out of it and will continue to do so. |

Well, I won't go as far to say the rap is undeserved. Mogul went many years with totally uninspired versions that weren't worth playing (and I stopped buying Mogul games for that reason). Skydog did a lot to raise interest in last year's game around here and his posts alone got me to buy it. I'm glad I did. I think Mogul 2K6 has a worse rap than it deserves (especially for a $20 game which is now free), but I do think Clay dug a hole for himself in many ways. I haven't bought this year's edition, but I may if OOTP doesn't get its act together soon.

I'll give Clay props for this. It looks like he is trying to get some respect back and he could have easily charged $5 for last year's version to earn some kind of money for 2K6.
If he continues to try to improve the game each year instead of barely putting any new features or enhancements, then I could easily support him in the future. At least he is not charging $50 for a bug ridden game that is unplayable. Not to say he doesn't deserve any criticism, but I have liked the steps he has taken to improve the image of his company which had been quickly waning over the years. So I will give this free game a chance.

Mogul 06 wasn't bad at all. This is a nice gesture.

*Yawn* ok, it was $20 wasted, I'll get over it I'm sure... glad to see he's supporting at least the next version of his game.... what a nice fella... Edit: and what irks me the most is he makes a thread asking about 2007 features when 2006 was just released and buggy as all get out.. Last edited by MizzouRah : 06-07-2006 at 02:26 PM. |
