Smile Going to Vegas w/o booking room

I'm going to Vegas in September (1st week of football) for a bachelor party. I'm not a big fan of the guys that are going. . . and they are being a little funny about the whole room situation. To make a long story short, this is becoming a trip were I will probably say my respects to the man-of-the-hour, and strike out and play 48 hours of poker.

Therefore, I'm thinking of going without booking a hotel room. I'm planning to spend all of my time on the strip.

Has anybody every done this, and have you been able to get a room "on demand". Second, do the casinos stick you with a brutal rate, or can you get a room for an affortable price? I'm thinking I'm going to play all Friday night/Saturday morning, sleep in the afternoon, then stay through the bachelor party Saturday night until the Sunday night red eye home.

Besides, this question give you all the chances in the world to threadjack with your Vegas stories, so I will just give you permission. You know you are going to do it anyhow!

uh, yeah...funny about the room situation. What no twin beds?

I'd go with the no room plan then.

On our honeymoon, the wife and I got a great room with a reasonable rate at the Luxor without reservations. Of course, arriving on a Tuesday at 1 am may have had something to do with that.

Call ahead to the poker room where you want to play and see if they have a poker rate for the hotel.

there's plenty of single ladies that are sure to have a room. but i don't think they'd appreciate you sleeping.

Find an escort with a good incall location and a competitive nightly rate.

So basically, you'd need like a room (at the most convienient) for Saturday afternoon, which is technically Saturday night. What about one of the just-off-the-strip low-rent sort of places? Shouldn't be expensive nor hard to book, gives you a place to catch your nap & a shower (usually a good idea after playing hard for 24h in Vegas).

You're not planning on showering for 48 hours? I'd get a room just for that reason.

I think this would be an ackward conversation:

Guys: Sorry, E, we have 6 to room, so we have no place for you to stay.
E2: No problem, I have a back up plan. I'm going to stay at a guy's house I met on the Internet.

There are thousands of off-strip motel chains that have cheap rooms available most any time.

Two Vegas trips within three weeks has known to end lives. I think I'm lucky my future wife is not murdering me in my sleep because of this.

Ny advise is to try to get a room at Sam's Town and or one of the STATION hotel casinos. they're cheap and service is great and caters more to locals. Ithas a nice atmosphere to them.

If you win, they'll give you a free room, hoping that by staying longer the law of averages will come into effect and you'll drop more money than you won. Just like every other player.

The Western is a good option. Or the Gold Spike. Just pack some heat if you go to The Western. It's on Fremont Street, but far enough from the canopy to be in the hood.

I'm not sure what Vegas rates are like in September. I know that the lowest rates are around now through August (when it's too hot in Vegas) and in December/January (when it's too cold in Vegas). Spring and Fall are supposed to be the highest rates.

However, Vegas has so many rooms that it's not too hard to get a last minute deal. You might be able to score a cheap room the day or two before you go. Places on Fremont Street Experience have excellent rates, with some rooms going for $10-$20/night (Las Vegas Club had a $5/night deal a year or two ago).

The thing with Vegas is that rooms on the weekends are usually expensive no matter when you go. It's also important to remember that Vegas hotels usually doesn't like to have guests check in on a Saturday.

Of course, even though Vegas has so many rooms, there stil lis a chance you could be shutout. If you're going on a busy weekend, you'll risk either paying an expensive rate and have a miserable time in the casinos ($15 minimums at the tables if you're lucky).

Go to LasVegasAdvisor.com to get an idea of rates on certain days/weekends, plus they have a freebie section on their forums, where people can answer these questions.

Well, not entirely accurate. If you walk into a casino with a $50,000 bankroll and average $100/hand for 4 hours or more, they'll likely give you a room comp. Usually $25/hand for 4 hours or more gets you a buffet or coffee shop. That's just the Strip.

It's actually possible to get a room comped downtown for $25/hand for 4 hours, depending on the casino (the Golden Nugget is pretty much like the Strip, but the other places are much looser). If you go downtown and dump $100/hand, you'll likely be treated very well.

I've played $5/hand and have often been sent mailings for free nights during the off-season.

One thing you can do is consult a casino host and tell them your expected play. Many of them will go ahead and book your room for you, with the promise that if you play as indicated your room is free. There are actually some Web sites that do this as well, including one that will actually book your room, charging you one night's fee and taking your credit card. When you arrive, you go to the casino host, get a player's card and let them monitor play throughout your stay. As long as you play as promised, the room is either free or heavily discounted.

If you don't think you can meet the table minimums for a free room, you might meet the minimums for free meals. IMHO the free meals might actually work out more in your favor than a free room, depending on where you want to stay. A free meal at one of the nicer Strip hotels is probably a whole lot better than a free room at the Strat or Sahara. My bro-in-law scored a $35 meal voucher, which easily fed three people at one of the hotel coffee shops (basically an upscale Denny's).

If McDonald's is your thing, it usually isn't too hard to score a comp there. I was playing at The Fitz in downtown and screwed up. I was playing all morning and was getting hungry. I was winning, betting good, but left the table for lunch and headed to the McDonald's (which was by the tables). When I came back, the boss and dealer both told me that they would have comped that for me. Rule of thumb is to always tell the boss if you're hungry. If anything, they'll hook you up with a hot dog and soda at the snack bar (keep in mind that they give you a voucher, up to a value, usable at any hotel-casino dining establishment).
