FOFC Favorite Rock Acts - Round 1 Group A
We now begin the tournament with the first of two Group A brackets, G 'n R and Rush are the two favorites in this group, but some well established classic acts could prove troublesome.
Records to date

Two very tough choices for me in this round in the Pantera/Zappa and Berry/Geils matchups. Hard to argue the influence of the legendary Chuck Berry, or the uniqueness that is Zappa, but in the end I went with who I enjoy listening to more.

Arctic Monkeys at #200??? That's insane. Should be somewhere closer to #800 or so.

Let the battle of the bands you literally couldn't pay me to endure begin.
On a more positive note, there weren't any more 1st round matchups that went voteless for me here than there were in the movie one, so that's a plus.

Pantera / Zappa was my most difficult choice in this set. I was sad to see Geils and Golden Earring's draws; neither was a tough choice for me to vote against, but I enjoy both of them a lot, and would bet that they would be my choice over several of the acts that will make it out of the first round. |

I'm not familiar with Gilmour's solo work and I didn't view it as McCartney vs Pink Floyd. Not a huge McCartney fan, but still went with him.

I'm a big fan of Gilmour's solo work, but that's a pretty tough draw.

Pantera vs Zappa was not really fair out of the blocks. They are both iconic in their genre.

Yes, but No Doubt had a hot chick with an annoying voice and some terrible songs. So...

What's there to 'get'? They are a garage rock band (though have gone a bit more bluesy with their last couple albums).

So, if there's an entry for Paul McCartney solo after Wings, does that mean there's another for when he's with Wings, and then another for solo before Wings?

There was definitely a period pre wings where he was solo. His McCartney album was the nail in the beatles coffin. |

WOW no J Geils Love! That one's so easy for me. Not really a fan of 50s rock. Pioneer or not I prefer Freeze Frame! *snap snap*

I'm definitely in the minority on Golden Earring and Slipknot. Can't stand Geddy Lee's voice and always lean more on the metal side.

Both of those were pauses before I voted. Earring suffers from simply not having the volume of quality work, 'knot suffers from going up against a band whose early work was a positive influence on the entire genre. Song by song it's closer than it might appear to some (most) but it isn't enough to overcome just how yuuuuuuuuge GnR was.

Back in the days when oldies radio still existed around here you could hear "When I Was Young", "Sky Pilot", "Don't Bring Me Down", or even "San Franciscan Nights" on any given day as well.

My band plays four Eric Burdon songs. You sir (HomerSimpson98), need to learn your Eric Burdon. I think this is a generational thing; unless you are a 60's rock fan, Eric Burdon and the Animals are just beneath the level of notoriety that it would take for someone to just 'know' them immediately. |

You know one cool thing about this tournament is it may end up exposing some to music they really never knew about before. I know I have already checked out songs from a couple of acts I didn't know well, or knew but had never really heard.

This is actually my favorite APP song
from a really cool concept album "I Robot". Listening to their best of collection I can't really get thorugh more than half of it. THere's "Games People Play" and "Don't Answer Me" too. I more like their weird instrumental concept stuff other than that. Then you have the Byrds. One of the most famous bands of the hippee period and SOOO representative of their time. "Mr Tambourine Man" is huge. Here's my favorite from them. and of course Turn turn turn... But then that's it. Those 3 songs. And for myself I like them because of the blending harmonies of David Crosby. And since they fired him, good riddance. Crosby will advance with two OTHER (better) groups. |
