When did baseball start having "Overtime"?

What the hell is with all this "Overtime" bullshit?

Baseball is not a Timed sport, therefore it can not have "Overtime"!!!

I first heard about Boston winning in "Overtime" on MSNBC, then I had to read about it in my local paper. Then I did a google search for it and it is posted everywhere. WTF.....

Baseball does not have "Overtime" people!

Why is it "sudden death"? Shouldn't it be "sudden life" or "sudden victory" so we can celebrate the winning team?

No, it is NOT sudden death either. The first team to score does not immediately win in baseball.

WOW. I can not believe someone with so many posts on this board would not know that.

Because fans watching a game in extra innings would rather die a sudden death than watch that crap for any more than they have to.

Yes. For some reason it just bugged me to hear reporters talk about a baseball game going into "Overtime".

It sounds dumb, but according to the definitions...

Quote:
–noun
1. working time before or after one's regularly scheduled working hours; extra working time.
2. pay for such time (distinguished from straight time).
3. time in excess of a prescribed period.
4. Sports. an additional period of play for deciding the winner of a game in which the contestants are tied at the end of the regular playing period.

It does literally make sense. Extra innings are a period of play after the regular playing period.

I am unfamiliar with the Japanese rules. In Japan baseball, maybe they do have "Sudden Death Overtime" where the loser must commit Harry Carey.

It's technically correct, but just not in baseball jargon. And it's another example of how football is taking over the country.

I do not like how this definition just seems to pull "additional period" out of then air.

Try this

Also, I have never read of a Golfer winning a tournament in "Overtime".

Next week will I be watching ESPN and hear a reporter talk about how Tiger Woods came back in Overtime to win the US Open?

The articles I read just said that Boston "went overtime" to win the game. I took it more as slang, not that anyone is seriously suggesting that baseball has overtime now.

I think that hockey can be overtime OR sudden death. I think that sudden death is a type of overtime.
